The 2022 Changan Shenlan SL 03 on which this Mazda 6e is based cost US$25k back then which was about 15k less than the model 3 at that time. Shenlan translated to DeepBlue so Changan created the Deepal brand not long after. Pretty sure it will cost a whole lot more when the Mazda gets to the UK.
@@pollumG Yes. Car it is based on was first marketed July 2022. But it had 56kWh battery with 200kW charging then (still has if you buy the sl03) but they have now an upgraded version with 68kWh battery and full on tech called the L07. The tech is by Huawei. So if you want the latest stuff they are upgrading. Remember the M3 and MY are older. Changan have reliable reputation and have been making cars since 1959 but only started EVs 3 years ago. They sold about 320k EVs in '24 which was 100% up on 23'. Total vehicle production ~2,4 million in 2024. Four point nine metres - that's a very BIG motor. That could make parking difficult in a supermarket carpark. I share your thoughts about it being somewhat of of date by the projected launch date but perhaps there will be last minute upgrades before that.
Nice to get an early preview of this. I have a soft spot for Mazdas because their interior design decisions are usually good and handling using traditional suspension setups is usually exact. The interior design of this looks to be good, though I expect we will miss traditional buttons for some functions. 300+ miles and 280 something horsepower to rear wheels looks like a good formula powered by a fairly small battery for that range. If the price is right, it should sell. I prefer it to anything VW/Audi are currently doing.
The now retired Mazda 6 ICE sedan was one of the most beautiful production sedans of all time imo. I’ve been waiting for this EV version since it was revealed a few years ago and it’s impressive. It could def use more power and a bigger battery. I’m not holding my breath for it to come to the US
I've owned three Mazda's, both of the first and second gen 6s and just parted withba cx5. Loved them all. I'll hold off on changing my business car until I get prices and the chance to drove one of thse.
Changan makes a wagon/SUV called Deepal 07 it is available in most RHD markets. It is good value but has slow battery in Australia. Fast is available in other markets.
It might be based on the L07, but it's not the same car. The L07 is an SUV, but this is a lower coupé body. The L07 has a very good 5☆ Euro N Cap rating, which means this should be similar too.
I have a soft spot for Mazda, they're the innovative, scrappy, small car maker VS the giants of Toyota, Honda, etc. And their cars look beautiful. There must be a good reason I don't understand but you'd think a fully electric MX-5/ Miata would sell incredibly well.
Australians understand this so they have been the second best seller to Toyota (largely fleet sales) for the past decade, punctuated by Ford solely due to sales for the Ford Ranger. For private passenger car sales, Mazda would be the top seller. In terms of ICE cars, reliable as Toyota but more premium feeling and fun to drive.
We loved our Mazda CX5, which apart from the ICE under the bonnet, was a very good vehicle. Dare I say the CX5 had better build quality than our current Ioniq 5. If the prices are and spec are right for the LFP, I might be tempted go for this, when our I-5 lease is up.
We had a CX-5 and the price vrs quality its just phenominal. We had seen an Audi Q3 and the basic spec was like £42k, very basic indeed with manual seats etc. The CX-5 top spec was £32k and we got it for just under £29k. Would love to see a CX5 EV absolutely.
I always think that it is the inside that matters most because that is the bit you see and where you spend your time. This does look very nice indeed. Not too sure about the front exterior aspect - bit dated already - but it does look the biz from the rear and especially the sides. good charging speeds at 200 kw. Fingers crossed for a sensible entry price. Thanks Tom; nice review as ever.
Looking very good, no argues about that! However the batteries are small and the power is not enough. And why frameless windows?! it is not a benefit IMO, not a all.
Traded my 2018 Mazda6 Wagon (Estate) for a BYD Seal. When my five year lease is up I'd go back for this in Wagon form. Hopefully Mazda Australia are listening!
2026!!! This car is a reskinned Changan SL03 that Wheelsboy tested in 2022. Back then it's 200kW LFP battery charging would have been right up there. The presenter did not mention that the 80kWh NMC "long range" battery version only charges at 95 kW. This is a problem with the Deepal 07 that has been imported into Australia. (07 is the SUV version, 03 is sedan version). The importer only brought in the 80kWh NMC version. It charges at 92kW. Australia has long distances and a woeful charging network. The smaller LFP much faster charging (3C) batteries are available in other markets. Also they are perceived safer in hot Australia. Having said that the Mazda interior looks really nice. The exterior looks like the doors have been T boned. Re age of design. At least as a 4 year old design the all the bugs should be squashed and Changan should have the assembly well and truly refined.
Could this be a good replacement for the (unbelievably under appreciated) 'classic' Ioniq? Will depend on the efficiency, but the hatchback and not being a bloody SUV does give it a good start!
Super review from Tom. I really like the styling, and the big froot. It's very clearly a Mazda. I hope it drives as well as it looks. Pricing will be the key. I heard the LFP version is going to be 45,000 Euros in Germany. Tom is right, it's not cutting edge now, by the time it comes to the UK, it could be well behind.
It looks OK and the interior is nice in a Mazda-ish way. But let's be honest, this is a rebadged Changan Deepal L07. Not that that's a bad thing, Changan is quite good at making BEVs and Mada is rubbish at it (see the MX30). The charging for the smaller LFP pack is pretty good at 200kW max, but the 95kW max for the bigger NMC battery is an embarrassment for a car coming out in 2026. Buy the big battery, and not only does the car go slower, but it charges much slower too. 45 minutes 10-80%, for an new car that will cost over £40k is feeble
No just RWD BEV with 2 different sizes 69&80kWh batteries. The larger one charges at less than 1/2 the speed and reduces motor output 15%. They make a Extended Range EV for less price but it is a bit more basic for Pakistan, Nepal etc and the also made a FCEV (fuel cell EV) but it was 4x the price $100k. Not sure if that is still made. I imagine they sold zero.
As an owner of 2 Mazda 6’s previously, I’ve been waiting for this car for a while, but it it’s going to take them to bring it to market does make me worry about it being left behind before it’s even started. Maybe they’ll take the opportunity to improve the batteries and motors further for launch.
Have a CX5 we havenowned from new since 2017 - great car. This one looks amazing and those lights in front a lot better then the new Tesla Y. If it comes to my country in 2026 I think it could be a great option for us.
it could be a winner, however it's not 2015 anymore. As you say, the current market and tech are moving very quickly, i.e. there will be a wave of solid state/ semi-solid state batteries coming in right around the introduction of this car. The fact that Mazda (who I've really respected) are showing this a full year ahead of being released just shows how far they, and the other Japanese makes, are lagging behind the Chinese. Feels like the end of an era on what we know and recognise as the main market brands.
Looks better on the inside than the outside, that said, I like the rear spoiler. Long wait for it to reach the UK though, maybe Mazda need to rethink that!
I wonder why it’s taking so long to arrive to other markets?? 🤔 It’ll be a real shame if they don’t offer this in North America. This would definitely help Mazda over here. All the stats look great. They can have a real winner on their hands. 🤞🏻

Great video as usual Tom. I know manufacturers want to make sure they are not forgotten and putting things out like this helps ensure they aren't but, if the car is at the stage where it can be presented like this and not a concept car, why on earth does it take over a year to actually make it available to buy?? As you say, by the time it's available, every other manufacturer will have updated and launched new models meaning the 6e will most likely be out of date? Mazda are not on their own in this though! The suede finish on the interior looks nice but if it's anything like sued you get on shoes and coats etc it gets shiny after some use? Maybe its special hard wearing suede??😂
Hey Tom...both batteries are Lithium Ion chemistry one is LFP the other ???(NMC/NCA...you didn't say I even replayed it back thinking I missed it but no all you said was Lithium Ion). Not available until 2026 though particularly as it's Deepal equivalent is already out in some markets. The other is the infotainment as well as testing for real-world range and charging tests, something I know this channel doesn't really cover but there are others luckily who do.
@TassieEV 80kWh is NMC and charges very slow. 95kW. The 69kWh charges at 200kW. They weigh the same but the LFP can put out it's electrons much faster as well so the motor puts out about 15% more power and the LFP car is faster 0-60 mph. It is a pity Inchcape didn't import the LFP 07 instead of going for the NMC.
Very Nice looking, but as you say Tom by the time it reaches the UK it probably will be considered dated style wise and of course no mention of prices?
Why do you hate the wonderful MX-30? Oh, don't say, its rubish range? It's a city car. My first electric and we love it. Fit for purpose. Shame Mazda are taking their time with electric cars. And please, give us a CX-5 EV.
Looks really very nice indeed. However how will that fake suede on the doors cope with getting wet when the doors are opened in the rain and finger grease? Design possibly a little compromised compared to competitors due to shared EV/ICE platform? What is the OTA software update like? Frameless doors are on Model 3 and Y Tesla, it's not that unusual.
Looks sharp but, another one of those massive-centre-consoles and that "cozy" feeling. (cockpit - cramped - nowhere to put your feet after you engage cruise control??)
Agree with Tom. 310 mi range will be less than impressive in a family car released in 2025, let alone 2026. The boot capacity is also a bit of a disappointment for a car that size. Otherwise a good enough looking car outside, but very very classy inside. I've had 2 Mazdas, they were good cars and I think the Mazda 5 remains my wife's favourite car of all the ones we've owned. I have no doubt this will be a reliable and pleasant to own car...
I had a Mazda 6 estate the same colour back in 2010, it was my favourite car until I got my Kia EV6. I like this for sentimental reasons, even though it’s frankly way too big, and the range and rapid charging on the standard model is less than my EV6.
Mazda is really taking advantage of Chinese innovation of EV battery and technology for their EV car. It is very practical approach for Mazda without investing a lot of money in EV. Whatever they are, business is just for profit, isn't it? I hope other Japanese car maker follow those approach and improve their know how on EV without investing a lot of money.
They've already decided to not bring the bigger battery to some markets (importer decision) because the smaller battery is so much better. The official range is hardly smaller, yet the fast charging speed is doubled (and is faster than many rivals!), the acceleration is better, and the chemistry is LFP which for most scenarios is vastly superior to NMC.
Looks great. Assume the LFP battery giving that range at the size it is means the car is a bit lighter than competitors which is good. Interior looks so much better than most new scratchy cheap competitors even if they cost the earth (yes, even you, Audi!). But that boot space is a joke for such a large car and we won't get it for over a year. Consigned to the "don't care" category when it really deserves to be a serious consideration as a cheaper A4 or A6 competitor.
@@jimj2683 because people who buy those cars value traditions and ease of use. More expensive cars are usually being bought for people status and they dont care how bad the product is. Look at new mercedes - interiors look like made by aliexpress. And buyers dont care, because they buy a badge, not a car.
So here’s the future for Japan. A reskinned car from a Chinese partner. I get the sense of it, because the Japanese industry still continues its EV denial, how the mighty have fallen. Nevertheless, very nice and a secondhand bargain in the future. Efficiency over performance is a nice touch as well.
Why would I turn off? I want to see manufacturers making more of this type of car rather than the cookie cutter SUVs that are everywhere now. This looks good, inside and out (although slightly disappointing to see no physical buttons and I hope you’ll be able to turn gesture control off; nobody really wants it and it’ll just end up reacting when you don’t want it to, much like emoji reactions on a Mac). It’ll be a great addition to a company car options list. Well done Mazda.
A 4.9m car should have a bigger boot than 330 litres although it does look bigger. Its dimensions are very similar to the VW ID.7 and that has a 532L boot
4:06 this is not a hard have better interior than new A6 sadly :( but I agree, it's nice. I hope to see correct boot numbers, because the car looks great. Gesture control? are we in 2018? And I agree.. it would be great in 2024, acceptable in 2025... it will be scrapping the bottom with 240 miles of real range in 2026.
So it's a Chinese EV with a Mazda badge, then? (That's a good thing, as the Chinese manufacturers know how to build EVs.) Why not skip the middle man (and Mazda's added margins) and buy from the OEM? Thanks for the video.
LFP, hatch, 200kw charging, relatively efficient = winner imo. Looks great too.
How can you know how efficient it is?
Btw the big battery is nmc with 45 minute charging... only the small battery is good. They flopped already

It's probably called Seoul red, which is the same colour of our CX5.
Great car, I might consider to buy it second hand in 2030
Lol
It's a beautiful looking car. I reckon they could do well with this, especially if it's priced right.
Wow great looking car..the power is down though and it will be out of date by the time it arrives here
As a past is we of a Telstar and a Mondeo hatch this floats my boat
Interior looks nice, the exterior is fine.
Took your advice, tried placing bets on every option. Somehow, it doesn't seem to work for me. :(
No price?
where is the commander control? this is by far the best feature on my current Mazda and would be a step backwards if removed
very nice looking car
Has everyone forgotten that Mazda had a working Rotary EREV Mazda2 over a decade ago?
Yes. Or I never knew that to begin with
Is it anything to remember?
Very Nice looking, but as you say Tom by the time it reaches the UK it probably will be considered dated style wise and of course no mention of prices?
The CLA is on my list, but this could give it a run for it's money. How long before actual driving reviews take place?
Love it. It's actually based on a Chang-an and made in China through their partnership.
That is a Changan Deepal SL03 painted in "Mazda red"
Is this a problem?
@@kenbee1957 Only if the Changan Deepal SL03 is a problem
Look great. You do have to question why there will be a 2 year delay between the cars China launch and its European launch.
I actually really like this, I hate the MX30 with a passion, this is the EV they should have released back then
Why do you hate the wonderful MX-30? Oh, don't say, its rubish range? It's a city car. My first electric and we love it. Fit for purpose. Shame Mazda are taking their time with electric cars. And please, give us a CX-5 EV.
Wow, looks fab.
What about bidirectional charge
11kw AC is pretty standard now, 22 is not usual
They've already decided to not bring the bigger battery to some markets (importer decision) because the smaller battery is so much better. The official range is hardly smaller, yet the fast charging speed is doubled (and is faster than many rivals!), the acceleration is better, and the chemistry is LFP which for most scenarios is vastly superior to NMC.
When is this expected to come US?
Never
This is a Changan Shenlan SL03.. from China! Just rebadged.
It’s not based on the heavy Ultium platform I hope looks like the BYD Han except with a less aerodynamic front
No buttons, just as the market is bringing back buttons. Oh Mazda.
Thats why its cheap. Buttons cost.
@@NoName-md5zb Why do the cheapest cars on the market still use buttons then?
@@jimj2683 because people who buy those cars value traditions and ease of use. More expensive cars are usually being bought for people status and they dont care how bad the product is. Look at new mercedes - interiors look like made by aliexpress. And buyers dont care, because they buy a badge, not a car.
I think you are spot on, by the time it comes out, it will look dated and will fall behind on range compared to its rivals.
What a beauty
So here’s the future for Japan. A reskinned car from a Chinese partner. I get the sense of it, because the Japanese industry still continues its EV denial, how the mighty have fallen. Nevertheless, very nice and a secondhand bargain in the future. Efficiency over performance is a nice touch as well.
Nice. Mazda need to catch up in the EV market. Made in Japan or China?
Made in China.
@ disappointing
@@juliandclarke Here in Australia every Tesla, Volvo and Polestar sold is made in China.
They certainly have the ability to built quality cars.
Okay this Mazda looks good
Lovely looking car.
Is this real it looks amazing. And LFP.
Who are you trying to surprise, the name is in the title?
That is nice looking, in so much as it doesn't look like another boring SUV
虽然大部分配件包括电机,电池来自长安,但经过马自达工程师的调教更加的好开。绝对值得比他的兄弟车型sl03贵大约四千美元。
A 4.9m car should have a bigger boot than 330 litres although it does look bigger. Its dimensions are very similar to the VW ID.7 and that has a 532L boot
Long and big front. That 70L drunk is really nice. And if you 330+70=400L… Not too bad, but not great.
It certainly looks like a 500-600l boot to me.
It is 473 litres. Whoever made up the press release made a mistake.
Looks very high quality.and better than an id7 maybe
Yep I'll have that thanks 🙏 what's the price? 7:53
Starts at about $23k in China.
