Are These Cheap Chisels Worth Buying?

- I found this set of chisels on Amazon for 11 pounds and positive reviews, I figured they’d be worth buying so I could let you know if they’re a waste of money or not.

You can put an edge on almost anything. The important thing is how long it can keep that edge.
Seem decent chisels though for that price
They’re definitely in my normal rotation now!
I found this really interesting, just goes to show if you put in a bit of effort you dont need to spend stupid money on chisels. Good work pal, would like to see more of this stuff
Thanks! I certainly will do more affordable stuff when I get it. It’s a market that’s often overlooked, but like many woodworkers, I don’t have the big money to throw at stuff, so as it’s part of my journey I like to show others 😊
Starting in on this video as the owner of embarrassing amount of chisel sets. I have the Aldi set and love them as much as the more expensive. I’d still buy a Blue Spruce set for high price if I really felt like my projects were fancy enough to deserve it. The Stanley socket handle set still make me smile when I use them. Ashley Isles and Pfeil are interesting and I’m curious to try them. Vintage Stanley Everlasting or similar is my favorite but I don’t have a set.
I too have lots of chisels, I think these will be my go to set for a while though
They look near as identical to a set I bought from Amazon a few years back after Rex Kruger reviewed them. He said they looked like the Aldi ones too, and they appeared to be sold under a bunch of different brands. I've been pretty happy with mine. Used them for dovetails in Oak and on cheap construction timber too, and they keep pretty sharp. Just need to strop them every so often when in use, and give them a touch on the high-grit stones every few uses.

Those are cheap chisels! I am hoping that you can make them functional. Wow, you got it sharp. It will be interesting to see how long it maintains its edge. Great review, thanks Dean.

Can't complain for 11 squid. I have a cheap set that I use for butchering out but then swap over to my fancy pants Narex Cryo's for the final touches. Best of both worlds.

@@WoodworkJourney At worst you might find yourself sharpening up more often but that isn't such a bad thing.
They seem a decent enough cheap chisel set. I got myself a set of Stanley chisels. Not expensive but decent none the less. :)

Hi Dean, have you tried Anti fog glass cleaner as a lapping fluid? I use "Astonish car care Anti fog glass cleaner " (black spray bottle). I think it's the anti fog element that stops the fillings rusting in the diamond stone. I've been using it for years and no rust on my DMT stones. so much cheaper than the measly little bottles of lapping fluid. So cheap I use it to spray down my diamond stones when I'm done.

Is it me, or is sharpening chisels a bit therapeutic?
I saved up for the Stanley Sweethearts, after seeing a few woodworkers on RUclips working with them. They haven't disappointed me, they look awesome and keep their edge pretty well!
Sharpening is one of those things I either really enjoy or find an absolute chore, I think it depends on urgency lol.

I've found that if I maintain the edges a bit better (by stropping them more often) I don't have to do a lot of heavy sharpening, because creating a new bevel takes ages! Have my sharpening station (similar to yours), tucked away under my bench for storage and easy acces.
What about the ring on the end? Is it not the same as a Japanese chisel? I have a very similar chisel set and all the rings are loose and I was under the impression that when you get new chisels you set that ring according to you're climate you live in?!
Good question, not that I’m aware of though, at least not on this instance. It just reduces the likelihood of the handle splitting when it’s hit
Here in America we refer to a mil as a thousandth of an inch. Makes it very confusing trying to teach people how to read drawings that always have metric and sae on them and working to a thousandth of an inch
0.039 inches isn’t a thousandth though is it?
