Why Do HUMMINGBIRDS FIGHT Over Feeders?

  • Hummingbirds are constantly fighting each other. Hummingbirds fight over feeders; hummingbirds fight over flowers; and hummingbirds fight over their whole territory. Hummingbirds are very territorial because their very lives depend on them guarding their food source.
A hummingbird has to eat its whole body weight every couple of days, so once a bird has found something he really likes he is going to protect that food.
Even though you see many birds on my balcony, the fighting over the hummingbird feeders goes on constantly. If you are trying to deal with territorial hummingbirds at your own feeders, try creating more territories so the bully birds can’t protect all of them.
Hummingbirds are the same all over the Americas. Everywhere you go to find them, you will see them fighting over their territory.

Last year I had 4 hummingbirds fighting over 2 feeders. This year I have 3 hummingbirds fighting over 3 feeders! As someone else said, the females squabble as well. I hear lots of high-pitched chattering as the birds proclaim their territory, and the birds swoop around doing acrobatics. Sure makes the backyard feel alive.

Hummingbirds are smart they remember where their food was last year. I had to temporarily move feeders due to some work being done. They came back and were flying around where food used to be wondering what happened, they finally found new location. For some reason they always arrive a week before flowers in bloom so always like to have feeders ready for them, first week of May for me 😊

After buying a house on 4 acres and putting up a hummingbird feeder, I have become mildly obsessed with these little birds. I am a 40 year old married father of 3 boys and never thought I would be looking for advice on how to stop this one little bird I call "DimeBird Darrell" from chasing off the other dozen or so hummingbirds that try and use "his" feeder. I am going to put up 2 more feeders on different sides of my property and one more feeder on my deck about 20 ft from the other original feeder. I want to be able to sit on my back porch and watch them fly around. I kind of enjoy them chasing each other around, but I know they need to eat instead of fight. Thanks for your advice.

People out west are blessed with many varieties of hummers. Here in the east (Mississippi) we only have the Ruby Throats. I once saw an accidental, a Rufous Hummingbird, in December, of all times. I learned later that they are the only hummer that breeds in Alaska.

Yes they battle for those feeders we have. Beak to beak , spinning in a circle, eventually flying up so high, we lose sight of them. But we sure can hear them !! Like a Star Wars battle lol. Little buggers!!
Thank you Carole! This was informative and great❤

Moving my feeders 10 feet apart really helped. Right now I only have 3-4 Broad-Tailed hummingbirds. Mid June a couple of Calliope Hummingbirds show up, the BT are not happy. In mid July the Rufous Hummingbirds show up. I love to watch the aerial fights. Thank you Carole for such a beautiful video.

Thank you for the video, I think you have answered my question regarding getting more hummingbirds to our feeders.
We have a male that has decided our feeders (we have three) are his, and any time another hummingbird comes to feed, he chases them away. We have some wire framing around plants in the yard, and he perches on the framing, waiting for other birds to show up. Then he goes right after them as soon as they are about to land on a feeder!
I mentioned to my wife last night that maybe they are too close together, and I think you have verified that in this video. So, we need to either spread them out, or get a couple more feeders and place them away from the originals.
On a side note, a nice surprise after installing these feeders is there are several Oriels (Black and Gold ones, and more Brownish/Yellow ones) that feed at our hummingbird feeders every day. The males like to chatter up a storm while perching, and also while feeding. The male hummingbird is pretty brave, staying at the feeders when the Oriels arrive, but he doesn't try to chase them, a little too big for that, ha ha!

We used to visit a church camp in Colorado that had quite a few hummingbirds around. One day a rufous decided he wanted one of the feeders to himself. He didn't bother any of the birds at the other feeder about 10 feet away just his. The next day all was good and there were birds around both feeders. Guess somebody was having rough rufous day.

I agree. We have several hummingbird feeders, and it's such a joy to watch them! However, the "dive-bombings" are sure something to watch. They go after each other in this nature's world in which they exist. I try not to let it bother me, but I sure wonder if they'll stop.

I’m upstairs on a sm. Balcony. I started out with 1 bird then I had 3 reg. I did have a bully I think it was a female because she brought her babies over to teach them to drink.
For the first time In March I had 11 all at once + new ones in between. I had to put 2 more feeders up. I ended up having 4 feeders thinking they wouldn’t fight . I did have a feeder that had
10 holes. That seemed to help. Most left at the end of April to go find a area that has a lot of flowers. They will be back .
Wow you have a lot of birds. As soon as I put the feeder with 20 holes it has bigger holes, I have I think an oriole and a mockingbird. Maybe I need to give them their own feeder?

I have orioles drinking from my hummingbird feeders. I tried getting them their own oriole feeder but they ignored it and continue to drink out of the hummingbird feeders. So I would say don't waste your money!

@@HummingbirdSpot ty. Yes I gave up all I did was the dollar tree feeders I took out the yellow flowers so the holes were bigger. They never touched it lol. As long as it’s safe for the bigger birds to drink nectar then I’ll will live them be. I’m sure they enjoy the sugar rush lol. Ty for your response.

I’ve got a feeder out here that reminds me of the Nemo movie….mine mine mine mine.
One bird will fly them straight to the ground. I got so concerned a few times that I was up and walking to see if I’d need to rescue an injured hummingbird off the grass :(.

In my opinion a lot of people worry to much about Bullies. It's part of nature. Consider the amount of sugar you will have to purchase if you have a lot of feeders like Carol does. After watching her stream for so long it's clear that it's time consuming and a lot work.

I agree but I cannot "not" feed them. So relaxing to watch them, mostly fascinating.I have a new home: feeding 5 stray cats, fish, turtles, and so far only 2 hummingbirds that are already claiming the 2 feeders. Where I am it is ruby throated hummingbirds. But why I enjoy the Hummingbird Spot and the dedication that Carol has to travel everywhere to find all the different breeds and locations. Never knew there were so many different breeds until The Hummingbird Spot. I have been inspired to help our little creatures, and yes a lot of work. But Thank you Carol!

    • @PyroPolo
      @PyroPolo Год назад

@@MR-pr8tp I'm not suggesting not feeding them. I sure do. My point is be careful what you ask for. If you get too many birds you might regret it. Obviously it works out in Carole's situation.

Good point about watching what you wish for. We have three feeders that my wife makes nectar for, so if we added another three, that's twice the work to keep them supplied with nectar. But it is very enjoyable to watch them, even if they keep chasing each other away!

Yes if they would just proceed in an orderly fashion could save a lot of calories.. people should plant mimosa trees and lots of them and stopped calling them and treating them like weeds they are the Tree of Life... plant wildlife-friendly foliage and let it do the work
