A very gifted composer, but somehow overlooked. I should recommend this composer to my local classical radio station. it is a nice addition to Haydn. The orchestration including trumpets an timpani is quite unusual and give the work a majestic grandeur.
Thanks, I agree with you, his music should be listened to much more. I am glad that some of his symphonies were also recorded, I found some in the cycle "Baroque Bohemia & Beyond"
I love Vanhal. His music's heights are absolutely comparable with those of his most celebrated contemporaries. To be honest I find this style rather different as FJ Haydn and possibly more akin Michael's. The first movement is more in a concertante fashion rather than concerto. In fact cello and orchestra dialogue does not show prevailing solo passages. Sunny movement. Second movement is a wonderful typical gallant gesture Finale starts somehow more conventional but it's just an initial impression. In fact soon after soloist shows up with several beautiful and rather difficult moments, more "Mozartian" than "Haydnian" to my ears. And also orchestral caliber increases before a juicy short cadenza brings to a splendid conclusion. Great job
Pietro Landri Some interesting thoughts; I agree that there are some real touches of Michael Haydn, even from the opening tutti of the first movement with the typical trumpet ‘punctuation’. I hear very little that is Mozartian or Haydnesque (the correct adjective in English); the development of material in particular is well short of what you would find in either of these composers. I did not know this work, for me it is very typical of Vanhal’s abilities as a composer, and agree that it is here given a fine, high calibre performance.
@@elaineblackhurst1509 They (Vanhal, Mozart and Haydn) knew each other very well. They played together in string quartett. Vanhal himself played cello.
Magnifique 🎶❤️🎶

Thanks, I agree, it was a golden age of music.
Vanhal war ja Cellist. Er spielte Cello im Streichquartett mit Haydn (Geige) und Mozart (Bratsche)
An inspiring hopeful Sybaritic way to begin a warm Sunday in Oaxaca....BRAVO!
