Like Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and so many others, Vanhal became the composer and the man we know him as now when he moved to Vienna. He was 22 years old when he settled there in 1761, and soon adopted a new identity, not as the Czech-born Jan Křtitel Vaňhal but as the urbane Jean-Baptist or Jan-Ignatius Vanhal. He played cello in an extraordinary ‘Composers’ Quartet’ led by his teacher Dittersdorf, with Haydn on second violin and Mozart playing the viola. Schubert rated him among the best composers of the day.
Flute quartets and sonatas were (almost literally) ten a penny in Classical Vienna; the clarinet was still a relatively new instrument when Vanhal composed these sonatas in the first decade of the 19th century. Haydn had only begun latterly to write for the instrument (in works such as The Creation), inspired by the example of Mozart. Nevertheless, the clarinet quickly became popular among amateur musicians, and it seems likely that Vanhal wrote these attractively mellifluous sonatas in order to capitalise on that market. Unclouded by pathos even in the slow movements, they are written to give pleasure to both players and listeners with relatively simple quick writing and memorable legato melodies perfectly suited to the liquid, vocal quality of the clarinet.
Rodolfo la Banca plays these sonatas on a pair of clarinets from the time: he is a specialist in the early clarinet both as a performer and teacher. The sonatas could equally be accompanied by fortepiano or harpsichordist; on this recording (unlike others in the catalogue) we hear the harpsichord, in the established partnership of Duo Chirò. Chiara Tiboni also contributes several brief and attractive sonatinas from Vanhal’s first published collections, Opp. 1 and 2.
The three Clarinet Sonatas and the six Sonatinas are written in the Stile Galante, formalistic, charming and melodious, but still speaking of a great originality and inventiveness, fruit of the extraordinary talent of their composer.

Merci pour ce beau duo . Jean-Baptiste Vanhal (en tchèque : Jan Křtitel Vaňhal) est un compositeur bohémien, né le 12 mai 1739 à Nechanice en royaume de Bohême et mort le 20 août 1813 à Vienne1
Biographie
Fils d'un fermier de Bohême, il étudie d'abord l'orgue avec Erban, Cantor (Kapellmeister) de l'église de Nechanice autour de 1752. Il devient organiste à Opočno in 1757, puis chef de chœur à Hněvčeves en 1759.
En 1761, sur invitation de la comtesse Schaffgotsch, il se rend à Vienne. Dans la capitale de l'Empire, il reçoit des leçons de composition de Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf.
De 1769 à 1771, il séjourne en Italie où il compose son premier opéra sous l'influence de Florian Leopold Gassmann. Il rencontre également Gluck.
De 1772 à 1780, pour des raisons de santé, il séjourne sur les terres du comte Johann Erdődy en Hongrie.
À partir de 1780, il s'installe définitivement à Vienne.
Vanhal compte parmi les premiers compositeurs ayant pu vivre de leur enseignement et du profit de leurs œuvres. Un de ses élèves illustres est Ignace Pleyel. Auteur de très nombreuses partitions vocales et surtout instrumentales, il joua un rôle important dans l'évolution de la symphonie (il en laissa plus d'une centaine). Ses ouvrages en ce genre frappent souvent par une teinte mélancolique qui fait de lui un des meilleurs représentants du Sturm und Drang en musique. Des diverses étapes de l'évolution de Joseph Haydn, celle-ci semble l'avoir attiré tout particulièrement. Sa symphonie en sol mineur de 1768 environ, notamment, forme avec la 39e symphonie de Haydn et la 25e symphonie de Mozart, à peu près contemporaines et dans la même tonalité, une remarquable et très intéressante trilogie2.
Œuvres
Parmi ses 1 300 compositions, on compte de très nombreuses partitions vocales (messes, requiem, motets et 2 opéras) et surtout instrumentales, dont 54 quatuors, environ 30 concertos, plus de 100 symphonies, des sonates, divertissements, sérénades, de nombreuses pièces pour piano (2 et 4 mains) et musique de chambre2.

Very interesting listening music composed by Vahnall (whose life lasted long) at the beginning of XIX century! We are used to his beautiful symphonies composed in seventies of the XVIII century. here the style is evoluted; not comparable to Beethoven of course but the sound is....Biedermier, it reminds Kuhlau who was much younger than him. The old Jan Krtitel was updated!
