Can you actually imagine someone watching this and then saying "Thumbs Down! What garbage!"... And yet there are fifty such people. Perhaps inebriated and couldn't understand the meaning of symbols they clicked on? I just can't imagine anyone taking the time to click on the link to listen to this and then deciding it's bad enough to take the time and effort to give it a thumbs down. That said, there are many things happening in this world today that I can't imagine and clearly don't understand. A truly spectacular performance of a truly spectacular piece. If you disagree with that assessment, please explain. Thanks.

I don't have to imagine. When I was young I thought this kind of music was garbage. And when I was playing this very video on my speakers recently, a housemate said they didn't like it. People like different kinds of music. But why someone would take the time to navigate to this video and then give it a thumbs down? Probably because someone else had raved about it and said you gotta listen to this it's amazingly good, or something. So they came and disagreed.

Not everybody needs to like the same. People that know other recordings of this piece may prefer those (not necessarily dislike this one though). For my personal taste, the quartet plays very smoothly, but the clarinet is unfortunately almost inaudible way too often. Not sure why, it may be the recording/mixing, but I just don't like it that way.

I like to imagine that in part of this movement Brahms recalls the occasion when at a young but impressionable age, and unable to sleep in a stifling hot Hamburg summer night, he heard a haunting gipsy melody floating up from a nearby tavern in the docks.

The music of Brahms is often described as "autumnal." It isn't, always, but sometimes the word is apt. Especially if one's years have passed the number of Bill's sonnet. Also read two by Tennyson, "Ulysses," and "Tithonus."

I loved this performance - the adagio is so chock full of longing, it chokes me up each time I hear it. My go-to performance of this is an old one of the Busch quartet with Reginald Kell; it’s from 1937, and the adagio is a good deal slower and more ‘stately’. FWIW, I dislike YT comments that insist on ranking different interpretations of masterworks. Despite their differences, I shall continue to enjoy both.

At some point the word "autumnal" entered the bloodstream of talking about Brahms's lateish music for clarinet. This was a mistake. This music is not about melancholic resignation; it's Brahms raging against the dying of light, violently protesting rather than admiring the leaves falling in autumn. Bachmann and the Ebene do this right.

I'm so dumb. I was looking for a particular piece of classical music, and all I had to go on was that I _think_ it's in B minor. "Clarinet Quintet Op. 115" showed up on the list. My first thought was, "Well, I know that the song I'm thinking of doesn't have five clarinets jamming together, but I've got to hear this! Only to learn that a "clarinet quintet" is, of course, typically a string quartet plus ONE clarinet. NOT FIVE CLARINETS.
This is a lovely performance though. I doubt replacing all the strings with clarinets would serve it. This probably has precisely the right number of clarinets. Leave it to Brahms, amirite?
    K I'm gonna go now.

      - You cannot play doublestops, vibrato, pizzicato and tremolo on one tone on a clarinet.
      - The clarinet in A cannot play below "small" c sharp, so you need a cello for the bass range.
      - The sound of the clarinet is perfectly embedded into the strings; the sound of five clarinets would be completely different.
