    I run a 661c with a 32" bar for just about all the logging/tree work i do, then a tree service was doing some work on a lot we are logging ( they were cutting a few hanging over the house) and they had a 500 i with a 36" light bar and when i picked it up i was amazed how little it weighed, like a feather compared too my 661c and i got a few cuts in on some oak and it felt nice, gonna get one soon for sure

    Before those 500's were available in the USA, a local high production hardwood logger, was given one of those to test out for a few months. Stihl wanted him to keep track of the gas he ran through it. He would run it for a month or 2, then send it back to the factory to check over/tear down. After each inspection they would send it back for more running. In the end Stihl gave him the saw for testing it for them.

      @@hoskinslogging9858 I'm a 20 inch bar guy... those 500s like a long bar they have a lot of torque. If I ran a 24 or 28 inch bar I would run mine a lot more. I like a lighter saw with the 20 inch bars that's the only reason I am not crazy about mine. The 500 is a good hardwood saw too and here lately I have been in set out white pine a lot so I have been using smaller saws from 572, 462, all the way down to a 550xp mark 2. Just curious as to why u guys cut your timber down the hill instead of pulling it around the hill? I’ve cut here in southern wv for about 20 years now and I know that sometimes a tree will break lose and go straight down the hill.. I always ask my dozer man where he’s gonna set the out, then cut them the opposite way so he can get them by the butt and once again sometimes that doesn’t work but about 90 percent of the time it will work.. like at the beginning of the video those little maples could have been cut right out in the road making it easy on the cutter so he doesn’t have to go over the hill to top them and the dozer man could have probably just pushed them in the set out hole without even hooking a cable… now don’t think I’m saying I’m better at anything or saying u done something wrong or bad, I’m simply a logger asking a question.. because u didn’t even try to cut them around the hill u cut them straight down the hill and I was just wondering why u would do that? But u do a fine job and keep doing what u do, please wear a hard hat, it’s a life saver

    • @hoskinslogging9858
      @hoskinslogging9858  2 года назад +1

      I’m still learning. I’m not the best and pulling hard on trees with the hinge. Dads mush better than I am at that. We cut in sweeps around the hill. We will usually cut a tank of gas then top. I don’t like the tops of my trees lying on the butts of others. But yes, those maples could have probably been pulled around the hill so that the tops would have been closer to the road. I just didn’t do it. Like I said. I’m still green. And I am wearing a hard hat in this one for once lol. Thanks for watching buddy

      You are doing fine, I wasn’t talking down about your cutting in anyway what so ever,.. this day and time u can’t even find a timber cutter,it’s almost a thing of the past.. once u learn to pull ur timber around the hill instead of cutting it down the hill it will be so much easier on u.. but u do a fine job and try to remember your hard hat..and once again not trying to tell u that u are doing something wrong, but I like for my logging brothers to stay alive, be safe and I’ll keep watching your videos

      Don't be worried about going little deeper with your undercuts and always make sure u clean out any duchmens in the undercut also always make sure u give yourself enough holding wood as well.
      1 it helps with being able to aim an steering it 2 should u need to use your wedges it gives u enough wood to work with to get a good lift and 3 it allows the tree to leave the stomp Cleanly less'ens the chance of it snapping and coming back at you or shooting chunks of tree every where.
