Install Fedora 23 in Legacy Mode (Dual Boot Windows 7/8/10)

- This is a tiny tutorial for dual booting Fedora 23 with Windows 7/8/10 in Legacy Mode.
After creating some space in Windows, follow:
0. Check if you have booted the installation media in Legacy mode or not.
- Fire up a terminal and type the command:
[ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo UEFI || echo Legacy
The output should say 'Legacy'. If it says 'UEFI', the check the output for the command:
sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda
- In case it says 'GPT: Present', the follow: • Install Fedora 23 in U...
- If it says 'MBR: Present', then reboot in Legacy mode, and then follow the tutorial.
1. Click on 'Install to Hard Drive'
2. Select Language and click on 'Continue'
3. Wait for sometime and then click on 'Installation Destination'
4. Now you either click on 'Automatically configure partitioning' and then click 'Done'
OR:
Click on 'I will configure partitioning' and then click on 'Done'
5. Now you can either select a predefined partitioning scheme out of Btrfs/LVM/Standard Partitioning and then click on 'Click here to create them automatically'
OR:
5.1 Select 'Standard Partition'
5.2 Click on '+' to create a new partition and select 'swap' as the mount point.
5.3 Click on '+' to create a new partition and select '/' as the mount point and choose the desired space to be 999999 so that this one takes up the entire remaining free space.
6. Click on 'Done' and then click on 'Accept Changes'
7. Click on 'Begin Installation'
8. Click on 'Root Password' and set the root password.
9. Click on 'User Creation' to create a user. Tick on 'Make this user administrator' only if you want this user to have sudo access.
I'll fast forward the installation waiting time! :)))
10. Click on 'Quit' and then reboot to check if you are able to boot into the newly installed Fedora 23

hello, I was followed your steps as they are and shrunk 40gb off my d drive. but when I try to install fedora 25, it shows only 2mb as available space ? and shows my entire 298 gb as total space. besides that , when I try to add mount point "/", it doesn't let me type any digits under desired capacity. help ?

Do you need a USB or CD to boot into Fedora? Like I don't want to it with VM's and I only have 16 GB USB's?? And which image do I use? Live or Netinstall?

You don't need CD/DVD/USB to 'boot' into Fedora if you install it in your Hard Disk. You only require one of them for installing Fedora. You can use the Live disk Image.
+Nehal J Wani Under the installation, when you have to choose where to install it, I have a problem. On windows I allocated 40 GB of space, but when I try to use that space, it just says something like "unable to allocate..."
I tried both LVM and Standard partition.

I followed the exact same steps but when I try to create a new swap it fails . I have 3 partitions which are basic and I have unallocated 50 gb space for Linux. please help.
You have two options. Either you skip the swap partition and continue with the installation or create both the partitions of type logical. Send a chat request to me on hangouts.google.com for quicker response. You can also use minitool partition wizard to convert an existing partition to logical type.

Excuse me .... but i can't change one of my partitions from primary to logical ... i dont even know what it means or what should i do .... but i have followed the steps and nothing changed ... still cant download it ... and i noticed you replied to comment like this ... by changing a partition from primary to logical .. and i don't know how to do that .. if u could help me .. please !

And i also had an unallocated space ... and i tried but it didn't work .. so i expanded the partition again

Alright ... thanks ... now i have changed the dynamic drive to a basic drive ... what should i do next ... they are all primary now
I am trying to install Fedora 22 with Windows 8.1 Pro as dual boot. The System BIOS mode is Legacy. I have followed each and every step of yours but got stuck at partition configuring part. When I press ADD Mount Point after filling in the Mount Point and Desired Capacity, a red ribbon with the text "Failed to add new device. Click for details", is shown at the bottom of the screen. When the red ribbon is clicked, a message saying "Unable to allocate request partition scheme", is displayed. When "Automatically configure partitioning" is selected and "Done" is clicked then "Error checking storage configuration" is displayed under the "INSTALLATION DESTINATION". Under Windows, I have 4 partitions and have unallocated 20.47 GB for installing the Linux OS from one of the partitions. Please help me !!
Hi! You will have to convert one of the four primary partitions to a logical partition. Then you can install Linux. MBR partitions scheme (Legacy) has a limit of maximum of four primary partitions.

Yes, you have to shrink space from the logical partition.

What do you see on the screen when you try to boot the computer normally?
when i try to add the swap mount point it fails and says "local variable 'e' referenced before assigment.

Successfully installed but when i start my laptop i wont find any option to enter WINDOW ,i mean window selection option is not there.

You already have 4 primary partitions. Please convert the partition number 4 (E:) to a logical partition. You can use Minitool Partition Wizard to do so. Send a chat request to me on hangouts.google.com for quicker response.

Which partition did you create before? Did you create it in Windows? What's the exact issue that you are facing?
here , i made a new partition labelled E , then i boot my pc from bootable flashdisk , but when i try to configure partition for fedora , it just shown the entire hdd , the used space and the free space , i cant find my new partition (E)

mine is in legacy mode, i have system reserved and C: (windows) as primary partition, i shrink my D: and i convert D as logical, then i leave the free space untouch. Will i be able to dual boot win10 and centos ?

i got a problem here, I cannot create more than 4 partitions,
i have successfuly booted in Legacy mode.
When i want to create the swap partition, it says unable to allocate aligned partition.

I tried installing Fedora in your way. but it says i have booted in UEFI mode. Also it says "MBR only". Please tell me how to boot/install fedora in legacy mode. I have attached the pic of terminal window for your reference.
