There was a referendum in Australia in 1999 about remaining in the Commonwealth, it still went ahead but the majority voted to stay in the Commonwealth! The Scottish people didn't ask for it
It wasn't about remaining in the Commonwealth. It was about whether to officially recognise Australia as a republic - by this time the rule that Commonwealth member nations needed to recognise the British monarchy as head of state had long been repealed, which is why 33 member nations are currently republics
@GuyPennebaker One of the three little flags centered on the South African flag is the Union Jack. South Africa only stopped recognizing the Queen as the highest authority in 1961 when we became a republic. We became our own country in 1910.
James Livingston As is the US patriotic song: My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty. Of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrims' pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring
I recall reading somewhere that while initially British, it was for a time considered a sign of respect to use the tune for any European monarch, regardless of the specific lyrics. That might be wrong, but it'd make sense.
You may not know, but in the old German Empire, the song "Heil dir im Siegerkranz" was sung to the same tune of "God Save The King/Queen". "Heil dir im Siegerkranz" wasn't the national anthem though, it was just the Emperor's anthem. Germany didn't have an official national anthem until the monarchy was abolished, and the Weimar Republic was founded.
"heil dir im siegerkranz" kinda copied "God save the king/queen", while "God save the king/queen" copied this other french song i forgot the name of also, a bunch of national anthems copied "God save the king/queen"
@Rokkatru then why is it that they still have their own flag? every other nation in this video has bearing the british flag and colors. so trust me old son south africa had its independents around 1920s
I may live in Canada... but I will ALWAYS be a loyal subject of the Empire. Even if it no longer exists. My forefathers were Celtic Britons, so I shall always refer to myself as a Briton.
@Elvuz He was the King of the Canada, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanganyika, Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, South Africa, The Gambia, Rhodesia,Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Fiji, Ceylon, Malta and pakistan... not just England
Was this sign-off used only around the Empire/Commonwealth, or was it also used around Britain too? 🇬🇧 The main reason I ask is because most British households didn't get colour sets until the early 1980s, so having 40s footage broadcast in colour to a nation with mostly AM radios and the odd black & white set - Though possible - Does seem quite superfluous... 😇
It actually was on the flag, temporarily. When the Revolution started, we created a new flag. It was like the American flag today, except their was a Union Jack where the stars should be. It looked a lot like the British East India Company flag. Although, as much as I love Britain, I must say, I really like American independence, and if someone tried to take that from us, we'd fight to the death.

Wolfe, the dauntless hero, came
And planted firm Britannia's flag
On Canada's fair domain.
Here may it wave, our boast, our pride
And, joined in love together,
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwine
The Maple Leaf forever!
The Maple Leaf, our emblem dear,
The Maple Leaf forever!
God save our King and Heaven bless
The Maple Leaf forever!
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are one and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
“Advance Australia fair!”
God of Nations at Thy feet,
In the bonds of love we meet,
Hear our voices, we entreat,
God defend our free land.
Guard Pacific’s triple star
From the shafts of strife and war,
Make her praises heard afar,
God defend New Zealand.
Uit die blou van onse hemel,
Uit die diepte van ons see.
Oor ons ewige gebergtes waar
Die kranse antwoord gee,
Deur ons ver-verlate vlaktes
Met die kreun van ossewa
Ruis die stem van ons geliefde,
Van ons land Suid-Afrika
Ons sal antwoord op jou roepstem,
Ons sal offer wat jy vra:
Ons sal lewe, ons sal sterwe
Ons vir jou, Suid-Afrika.
Love this as a young man in my 40s, hate how this culture has been taken from us.
They've changed it back to God Save The King after Queen Elizabeth Died
This anthem always looks to me nostalgic of better times.
RISE O LION! RISE AGAIN! WE NEED YOU BACK, O EMPIRE! GOD SAVE THE KING!
There was a referendum in Australia in 1999 about remaining in the Commonwealth, it still went ahead but the majority voted to stay in the Commonwealth! The Scottish people didn't ask for it
It wasn't about remaining in the Commonwealth. It was about whether to officially recognise Australia as a republic - by this time the rule that Commonwealth member nations needed to recognise the British monarchy as head of state had long been repealed, which is why 33 member nations are currently republics
long live the British Empire!
When we used to be a great, proud, strong nation.
correction:
1) The British Empire fought AGAINST facism
2) I have hair
3) Define Traitor
the land of the kiwi has and since been included on this. if we got a modern version. the flag would be CGI by now
Long live our country! 🇬🇧
@GuyPennebaker One of the three little flags centered on the South African flag is the Union Jack. South Africa only stopped recognizing the Queen as the highest authority in 1961 when we became a republic. We became our own country in 1910.
God save our gracious King
Long live our noble King
God save the king
Send him victorious
Happy and glorious
Long to reign Over us
God save the king
Dieu sauve notre Roi
Notre gracieuse roi!
Vive le roi!
Long et victorieux,
Heureux et glorieux
Longtemps régner sur nous
Vive le roi!
Did they even forgot Hong Kong at that time?
God save King Charles III
Good for you. I was getting worried that nobody on these pages seemed to know their history.
Every time I listen this I think of the German Imperial anthem
That's because the tune is the same
James Livingston As is the US patriotic song: My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty. Of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrims' pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring
Guys, get this: the tiny principality of Liechtenstein _also_ uses the same melody.
The Russian Empire used the same tone in the 1830’s.
I recall reading somewhere that while initially British, it was for a time considered a sign of respect to use the tune for any European monarch, regardless of the specific lyrics. That might be wrong, but it'd make sense.
yeat clearly at the start it says mono fromatted 1930s early colour film
Long live the british empire!
You may not know, but in the old German Empire, the song "Heil dir im Siegerkranz" was sung to the same tune of "God Save The King/Queen". "Heil dir im Siegerkranz" wasn't the national anthem though, it was just the Emperor's anthem. Germany didn't have an official national anthem until the monarchy was abolished, and the Weimar Republic was founded.
umm no "Heil Dir Im Siegerkranz" was the official anthem of the German Empire and not a emperor anthem check your source next time
"heil dir im siegerkranz" kinda copied "God save the king/queen", while "God save the king/queen" copied this other french song i forgot the name of
also, a bunch of national anthems copied "God save the king/queen"
God Save Charles III!
There was not TV at the time, but it could have been used between 1947 and 1953.
This must be post 1947, there’s no India.
Right
Doesn't change the fact that you ran away. bawk bawk
George VI?
Yes sir.
Yes King George VI the father of the current Queen of England, Elizabeth II.
That king is George VI.
I want the British Empire back lol it makes the UK more royal
@Rokkatru then why is it that they still have their own flag? every other nation in this video has bearing the british flag and colors. so trust me old son south africa had its independents around 1920s
New Anthem 🫡
dont know but they sure do in Jamaca.
there was a survey in which many wished to return to British rule.
I may live in Canada... but I will ALWAYS be a loyal subject of the Empire. Even if it no longer exists. My forefathers were Celtic Britons, so I shall always refer to myself as a Briton.
Not me, not ever

The main reason I ask is because most British households didn't get colour sets until the early 1980s, so having 40s footage broadcast in colour to a nation with mostly AM radios and the odd black & white set - Though possible - Does seem quite superfluous... 😇
It was shown in movie theatres at the end of programmes.
it says 30s pause it at the very starting screen
@Lagwagon555
That's North (NTR?) Ireland.
Ireland was already independent.
Hey wheres Singapore, their Crown Colony at that time?
and not to mention edward was the last king to serve full reign as the king-emperor
We have come to the conclusion that this film coluld have been made between 1947 and 1952
my grandpa fought under a red ensign with the union jack on it.
God save the king is Back boys
God save our gracious King!
Long live our noble King!
God save the King!
Send him victorious,
Happy, and glorious.
Long to reign over us,
God save the King!
