So I am a diesel tech up here in Oregon. I have a small repair business in the north side of the state. I have rebuilt several 3406 cats. I can tell you that there is no hi pressure oil in the cylinder head on one. Only oil to go above the block is from the push tubes. It drains back down thru the head to the oil pan. That truck was missing on multiple cylinders and blowing coolant out the exhaust. I’m betting that you have a head gasket out between 2 cylinders or a broken liner. It’s quite possible with the color of the water in the radiator that the liners did get worm holes. Don’t ever ever ever run a Diesel engine with just water in it. The harmonics of the combustion paired with the surface tension of straight water will erode the metal on the engine. And some engines take very few miles gif this to happen. Notice that water will dome over the top of a glass but antifreeze won’t. It can’t hold the air pockets that will burst with combustion in a block and eat out the metal. Also if you look for an older Ford 8000 Canadian they had a whale belly frame on them that is like you are talking about. I know where there is one here in Oregon that has a 3208 cat and a 10 yard dump box on it. He might even be willing to let it go for cheap. Keep up the good work!
You are assuming that the failure was your fault, but there was also probably a reason the truck was parked. The previous owner probably overheated it at some point, causing the damage and the temperature gauge has probably been faulty for a while.
I absolutely love that I can watch Cabover stuff and then storm chasing in the same 30 minutes. Thanks Hunter. Now I’m pumped about your cabover project.
Showing all the detail in time lapse with your narrative is great. Sorry to see those cracks, I look forward to the repair and hope you get it to your vision.
I really liked how you did that too, for someone who knows nothing about vehicles or parts its nice how you explain it. Id love to see little red arrows pointing :D
As exciting as it is to chase tornadoes, please don’t push your luck too far, because I really wanna see you build that truck! Those magnificent winds can easily have a hypnotising effect. Please, please be extra careful and take care of yourself.
Great job narrating your video’s and the way you explain your work in a very clear way. Your expertise knowledge is something most mechanics wouldn’t ever be able to do. The teaching is done in a way that’s easy to understand and you place emphasis on the areas that are most important.
Looks like you were in the rear inflow jet. Probably my favorite place to be. Watching the wind lift moisture and dirt from the ground and sucking it into the vortex and into the updraft. Spectacular.
What a fantastic video....two of my favorite things: trucks and tornados. Glad your not stretching the frame just to stretch but you're doing it for a cool reason. More axles...I love it!
That's Insanely AWESOME, 48 yrs ago I exp an electrical storm in the middle of the night, it lasted for several hrs and it was consistently bright, I was in my element, I have never seen or exp the like since, it was like living Inside a strike and where I found the love for extreme's, Free climbing, Mountain climbing, Stunt driving etc, I pushed the absolute boundaries and never looked back. Have fun.
Everything is fixable. You got a nice truck. All part of owning older trucks. When you get it the way you want and get those compliments it's all worth it
As long as you're having fun, and love what it is that you're doing, it's not really job the way I feel about, and I taught that to my sons too. As soon as its no longer fun, and something that you truly enjoy, and it's getting to more stressful than anything else. It's time to rethink what you're doing, and figure out if there's a way to get back to when it wasn't a heart attack pending, because life is too short to burn yourself out for the benefit of others with nothing left for yourself at the end. Excellent content, and when you slow down you really do have a entertaining, and informative channel that compliments you as a person. Head up shoulders back, keep your eyes firmly in the direction of your goals. Make a comprehensive plan, and never change from the plan, slight modifications are expected, but never change the core of your plans. By doing this, and not deviating from them, because someone else wants you to do more of what they want. They're not interested in you or your plan, they're out for whatever you can do for them. Walk away if it's not a mutual benefit for both parties, and then base that on the amount of effort each party is bringing to the agreement.
I love following your cab over adventures. I also find your tornado chasing to be fascinating. I can hear Hunter being advised to think outside the box and his response “What box?” Keep on being you 🎉🌪️🎉
I'm sorry the damage was so bad,but with 900k on it,it's probably worth a full rebuild,it did sound like an old trawler I fished on😂, The best of Irish luck with your project, can't wait to see the end result 👍🇮🇪.
Thanks for the cabover content; takes me back to my Dad's time in the saddle and getting to ride with him in his International. All the best and good luck with things!
In case it’s true the sleeves could be pitted enough to allow mixing oil and water through the cylinder walls. Just a thought with mileage as high as it is. Love the storm chasing as well! Best of luck on both ventures.
Well it really doesn’t matter what you call them. Sleeves liners or whatever. That’s what I always called them when I was putting the engines together back in the early 90’s.
No argument from me apparently everyone calls them liners. I honestly don’t care. The definition says they are basically the same depending where your from. Now that I’m retired I really don’t care.
On my first big truck {87 LTL 9000} 3weeks into being a new owner/op. my 3406 broke a piston cooler nozzle of and cooked the O rings out of 2 cylinders . From what CAT did to my bank account over those years , I recommend a NTC swap . Add pump problems and it gets worse .
Should have subbed a long time ago, but this vid pushed me over the edge. Keep the good content coming brother, I'm excited to see what's coming! I'd also love to see more about your stormchasing rig!
Usually that happens when a liner sinks. Probably need to have the counterbores cut and shimmed to lift the liners back up. Just from my experience twice. Good luck tho ! Good video !
Hey hunter, if you havnt seen him already, watch “adept ape” I know I’ve heard him say cracks on certain model cylinder heads just happen and the engine will run fine with them, this one being so extreme I’m sure it’s not the case, but he’s awesome and a very good teacher.
One of my favorite videos you've done yet. An awesome detailed breakdown of an engine that fewer people have experience with and then some sweet storm chasing. Keep it up, dude!!!
Awesome cabover hunter damage was probably already done but maybe a little insult to injury that was already done cuddos to you and your positive attitude hope you getter going sure you will godspeed
Bro!!! Truck content is cool but your first hand view of the tornadoes is straight 🔥 . Freaking awesome. My wife and I live in Texas near the coast and we do that shit during hurricanes. Sketchy as hell, but you only live once until you dont. The adrenaline rush is so addictive 🎉🎉🎉
Man, the tornadoes gets my adrenaline pumpin the one tornado near the end that was above you that is one amazing sight to see me in a buddy have always talked about tornado Chasin one day🤙
Just buy a heavy haul double frame chassis. Semi truck chassis’ are heat treated and not really supposed to be welded on unless you know the proper procedure to heat treat the frame again. As my my father owned a shop that specialized in building big trucks for various uses but primarily the oilfield I’ve see more truck frames that were cracked out and completely compromised due to cutting, welding and drilling into the frame improperly. We were only one of two shops in the area that was certified to work on as well as stretch frames and there is a very specific technique to it in order to prevent failure thus preventing accidents. The reason I suggested a heavy haul double frame is because I’ve seen them handle some crazy amounts of weight and it would work just fine for what you have in mind and it will be much safer. Good luck with your project though. Look forward to seeing it finished.
Cracked heads/engine blocks suck. I cracked my Mercruiser 350 on my 25’ power boat last winter (water intake got plugged so winterization didn’t get all the water out. Last winter was cold in Michigan. So, it’s for sale now, in good shape other than the engine and includes a nice trailer. I love the storm chasing! I’ve been Skywarn certified for years and used to storm spot here in Michigan. It’s hard to see much with all the trees and the heavy rain. I traveled east through South Dakota once with tornadic storms chasing us all the way. Fun times!
Man what a beautiful old Ford Cabover! I love those ol cabovers! I’d love to find one with a good ol 2 stroke Detroit engine. I just love the sound of those!
No worries mate! Nuts and bolts! I'm a girl🎉by right and birth! And I rebuilt my first truck..444cummings ...by the time I found my dream truck I was confident I could rebuild it too if necessary..REBUILD IT..take us along for the journey
🔥right on man.. just a beautiful truck, grew up at farm and we had old binder flat nose, was so fun riding it there. FYI RUclips unsubscribe me from your Chanel.. i was wondering y never seeing any your new videos 🔥👊🔥🔨⚙️🏍🚜
Great video, can’t wait to see the build. The oil and coolant mix could possibly be the liners. I also agree the 3406b with jakes is a better platform.
As a Kansas born resident I've been thru a few nados myself and typically you can't tell which way they are going or coming towards you and they can move up to 150mph or more depending on the category storm chasers mostly spot severe weather and report it to nws in the area
900,000 miles and a Sweet Price.. The head was already cracked Sir. The full send run you had on video was what’s called the Old Italian Tune Up. Drop the hammer and blow it out. Also know as a Full Send.
keen to see that project come to life will be following. new subscriber from New Zealand gained. I love heavy D's channel, but at times lacks some of the nitty gritty with engine repairs. Love how you did a voice over describing in detail, yourself taking that engine apart. very cool. Also never cared for storm chasing but am now extremely interested
It sucks to lose a mill, but that's the beauty of rigs, right? There's always another engine, you can always try something new. Best of luck with this thing, it's nice to see younger dudes running cabovers in North America.
I stopped in just for the cabover content and got a bonus of better storm chaser footage than most tornado documentaries. "...this camera is not capturing how close this dang thing is" ummm, yes it is... yikes. The footage of it that close was scary, spectacular, and eerily beautiful
That's a bummer the truck is down .....plans seem real interesting.....would've been nice if u could've made a lil money with the truck first but I guess the engine couldn't make it It happened that way for a reason.
@HunterGoodrich Tough break on the engine. I guess a coolant flush, air bleed and running the cabin heater is a good procedure when buying new equipment, while a infra red thermometer helps narrow things down. best of luck with the new engine plans, really nice seeing a ford cab over coming back to life.
Good video with the time elaspe and voice over great way to do it, helped it flow smothly, and informative and interesting. Wouldn't the crack determine why you have both if crack goes to exhaust and or intake it would allow both in !Or possible more damage further in! Keep up the good work your own as you can and width the team, hopefully you can find a balance, understand you do not have time to always get video every week, but enjoy when you do and with the team you always standout and it is better with you there, and we get to see you there and then when you do uploaded a video it is unigue and a bonus or treat! Catch you next time!
Dang you have some great videos. You also are very knowledged on working with these old trucks. Watched your engine swap out first. You rock son . And I like that cab over too. The truck had a 99% chance of being parked because it had head issue. Thats my guess. Not your fault
The Day its registered and then blows the head gasket. HAHHAhhahhahhaha BTW, this tear down and voice over was most excellent!! Full breakdown and all details on the work you do. Kickass Hunter!!
We have never haven't a tornado here in Tucson Arizona in over 100 years due to how we are surrounded by mountains on all 4 sides. I love them though . used to chase them in Ohio where I'm originally from
Hunter I had a truck that I drove for around 4 years that pushed coolant. Eventually it was getting to the point of being in the oil just a tiny bit. For me the truck wasn't worth a head or head gasket or full rebuild. So I put it on an auction and sold it. Trucks get sold and parked everyday because someone was tired of working on it or paying for it. Plus 900k is typically pretty dang tired. Lol had to come back and edit cause that storm chasing was pretty sick.
been workin on these engines 25+ years, the b model is an ok motor, C series is whatcha really want, yep water getting in the cylinder will not compress so thank god it went by the rings and into the crank or you can bend rods or crack pistons. you’re getting diesel fuel in the coolant from the piston pushing it in there thru the cracks on its compression stroke. you do have a mess on your hands, ya gotta get that all outa the system by using like purple power, remove the oil cooler it had to be cleaned it replaced get new oil in it asap and don’t be surprised if you need to do a few oil changes to get it allll out or pull the motor apart and clean it… that water will hide on low non draining areas and it takes forever to get it out of the engine just doing oil changes … it’s a process that’s for sure
God I hate Cabinovers. Back in my day it was where you started out. My first Car was a 73 Mack one stacker with a 31'' bunk, a 237HP and 5speeds. All for 54mph downhill with a tailwind. LOL No AC in Aug. and 126` heat and I loved it.
Wyoming boy here up by Cody. Had a hell of a tornado on Carter mountain also heard about 1 down in Wright that really hammered a lot of stuff. Weather has been crazy this year.
Great video, tutorial part was great... wise your friend sparks and Allen would show more what's what, that be said you do a really great job explaining what I mean you have your head... hardly um uh stuff
I would say you might should do a full overhaul because I believe there are orings in the sleeves that could leak coolant into the oil. Ask a cat mechanic what they recommend.
Best of luck to ya buy you lost me at 2nd steer axle. To me it just won't look good. But hey, it's your truck, your dream so get to it brother. Hope it turns out amazing for you.
So I am a diesel tech up here in Oregon. I have a small repair business in the north side of the state. I have rebuilt several 3406 cats. Sounds like it was running fine for a while before he ran it with no temp gauge got way too hot and cracked the head now a cheap gauge cost a head
he did say it had almost a million miles haha
@@rockyrivermushrooms529 one of the trucks the guy I work for is a 2019 and has 1.2 million kilometres
@@XxXiceyXxX2 So what?
900k miles is ready for a rebuild. Also 1.2km is only 750k miles....so that is less than 900k miles....
I absolutely love that I can watch Cabover stuff and then storm chasing in the same 30 minutes. Thanks Hunter. Now I’m pumped about your cabover project.

Youll want to check your oil cooler as well to see if thats leaking as well getting oil in your water. Its pretty common on those cat engines
Looks like you were in the rear inflow jet. Probably my favorite place to be. Watching the wind lift moisture and dirt from the ground and sucking it into the vortex and into the updraft. Spectacular.
This build is gonna be awesome, and can't wait for the reveal of the new project. Glad you decided to work on your own channel👍
Good for you Hunter, That is an amazing Truck, I hope you have a good time building your new Truck to how you want it built.
What a fantastic video....two of my favorite things: trucks and tornados. Glad your not stretching the frame just to stretch but you're doing it for a cool reason. More axles...I love it!
Man. I'm in awe of your skills. This is just fantastic to watch. Thanks so much for sharing with all of us. Genuinely impressed!!

They are called liners.
Well it really doesn’t matter what you call them. Sleeves liners or whatever. That’s what I always called them when I was putting the engines together back in the early 90’s.

Hunter, all of this is great content, thank you!! Really digging the storm chasing. TOTALLY JEALOUS!!!
Ever since watching armed and dangerous when I was a kid. I fell in love with those cabovers. I’d love to buy one.
Hello Hunter I am from UK just watched all your videos. Think your doing a great job on RUclips. Hope everything is working out for you.

The project your pursuing sounds absolutely awesome! Im def gonna be watching the progress broham and yes the weather content is legit!

Amount of times I drove past this in Colorado City, glad to know it went to someone that can properly care for it

Can't wait for cabover build videos. We had a sweet tornado touchdown in western Wyoming right next to the plant I work at just a couple of days ago.
So glad I randomly came across your channel via my recommendations. This series is sick.

Thank you for explaining what you did over the time lapse.

Hurry up and build that truck please. It sounds like an amazing project and I can't wait to see it 👍❤️
Outstanding tornado footage can really see the strong ration above that was awesome!
Thank you for enjoyable show plus inspiration to do my best on toward goals ,God bless
Thats a real shame man. This is a sick truck so im sure it'll be on the road again

I honestly like your channel, doing your own thing is awesome.
That's a bummer the truck is down .....plans seem real interesting.....would've been nice if u could've made a lil money with the truck first but I guess the engine couldn't make it
It happened that way for a reason.
well lad old engines almost always have cracks in the head, only matters if you lose pressure, when the crack hits valve seat it mattere
@HunterGoodrich
Tough break on the engine. I guess a coolant flush, air bleed and running the cabin heater is a good procedure when buying new equipment, while a infra red thermometer helps narrow things down.
best of luck with the new engine plans, really nice seeing a ford cab over coming back to life.
Was not expecting the tornado Content!! great addition, so cool I’ve never wanted to see a tornado so bad before😂😂
Your tornado footage is legit! Love those angles from inside the action👌🏼

been workin on these engines 25+ years, the b model is an ok motor, C series is whatcha really want, yep water getting in the cylinder will not compress so thank god it went by the rings and into the crank or you can bend rods or crack pistons. you’re getting diesel fuel in the coolant from the piston pushing it in there thru the cracks on its compression stroke. you do have a mess on your hands, ya gotta get that all outa the system by using like purple power, remove the oil cooler it had to be cleaned it replaced get new oil in it asap and don’t be surprised if you need to do a few oil changes to get it allll out or pull the motor apart and clean it… that water will hide on low non draining areas and it takes forever to get it out of the engine just doing oil changes … it’s a process that’s for sure
Just make sure you have TWIN STACKS on it
Can’t wait LETS Get Her Done 😎👍🏾
YOU GOT THIS BRO. SHE WILL BE GEEAT.
You have given yourself away, can’t wait to to the ultimate storm chaser build
Coolant in the oil maybe bad orings on the sleeves, cracked sleeves or rust on the sleeves etc

Cabovers and Storm Chasin!!! Right up my ally!!! Let’s Gooooo!!!
I would say you might should do a full overhaul because I believe there are orings in the sleeves that could leak coolant into the oil. Ask a cat mechanic what they recommend.
Next time your chasing storms around chugwater and hawk springs hit me up if ya need a place to stay or anything! Good work man
