    Glad to be your 926th! You're almost there! Great luck my friend, and great channel. I am itching to go fishing, but it's warmed up enough here in Iowa to make the ice a bit sketchy, but not open yet. My least favorite time of the year!

  • @zaferberkun
    @zaferberkun 6 лет назад +1

    Can someone please explain why you would want to use a scrolling sonar like the Helix vs a flasher when your transducer is not moving (like when you're ice fishing)? I guess you get a history of what happened, but the screen looks like a mess compared to a flasher especially if there are multiple fish moving around with your jig (imo). It's hard to tell what's what. And, its not like your're mapping the bottom (because you're not moving). I think I would be putting the Helix in some sort of flasher mode...
    Anyway, other than maybe saving some $'s by having a dual use unit, I really don't get it. Thanks for any help/opinions!

    • @RushVoorhisOutdoors
      @RushVoorhisOutdoors  6 лет назад +1

      Better target separation, GPS + maps. You can save waypoints, have multiple views, zoom x8 feature. And chirp sonar to get a better idea of what is actually down there. For instance, when you fish 20 feet with a vexilar you only get 1 zoom option , with the helix I can be in the bottom foot of the water column vs the bottom 5 feet. Lots of perks it's all personal preference tho! Thanks for stopping by man!

    • @RushVoorhisOutdoors
      @RushVoorhisOutdoors  6 лет назад +1

      And the way the scrolling screen works you can see how the fish came in hi/lo left / right. With the vex you have no idea.

      @@RushVoorhisOutdoors Thanks for the reply! I did some further research and came to the same conclusion. Ended up getting a Garmin Echomap 9" and the Garmin ice kit. It has all the good stuff (SI/DI/Chirp, etc), so will go on the boat in the summer. Was looking at the 7" Humminbird Helix ice kits, but wanted something larger for the summer, and only Garmin seemed like the best all-around dual use system (plus mind blowing panoptix at some point!)

    The hummingbird is a cool unit. I've always been a vex guy. But there's getting to be some good alternatives to a conventional flasher. I know alot of guys love marcum but it's not a unit I will ever recommend

    • @RalphBarton-fishing
      @RalphBarton-fishing 6 лет назад

      Rush Voorhis Outdoors I bought a marcum vx-1 as as a second unit. It's just over 2yrs old and the motor is shot. My.buddy has a marcum also. It's been sent back to be fixed for the same issue as mine 3 times in just a couple years. I found a forum online where people have all had the same issues with the motor as well.. I bought a vexilar fl8, must be 10 years ago and it's still on the same battery. Never an issue

    • @RushVoorhisOutdoors
      @RushVoorhisOutdoors  6 лет назад

      +Ralph Barton weird! Thats the first complaint that I've heard about the Marcum units. That's pretty s***** though I'm not going to lie! Yeah you really can't go wrong with a Vexilar unit. It sure does seem bulletproof to me.

    I own both of these but havent used the helix 5 on ice yet. Super excited to try it. I am super comfortable with a flasher style during winter. I love the maps feature on my humminbird. I do hear that the humminbirds eat batteries pretty fast though so I may have to purchase another and keep em charged before I go out. Actually selling my fl-8 and upgrading and still want another vexilar. I fucking love these units, grew up on em and they havent failed me yet. I just want the zoom feature after trying my buddies marcum. Good fish finders are worth it and ill respect anybodies decision. Tight lines folks!

    Hey Rush. This is off topic but I didn’t know how else to ask you a question. and since you fish elmo a lot I was wondering if younhave used a underwater camera out there for perch fishing through the ice. My kiddo wants one. He loooves perch fishing at Elmo . Anyway I was wondering if the water clarity at Elmo is good enough to make a Aqua view type camera useful? What’s your thoughts?

    • @RushVoorhisOutdoors
      @RushVoorhisOutdoors  5 лет назад

      hey man! thanks for the comment!
      The clarity @elmo is HORRIBLE fyi....but somwhere like the bozeman lakes have much better water clarity . i've used my underwater camera at elmo and it's just hard to see anything with all the silt in that dirt pond. so no, not a good idea at elmo, but somewhere like Daily, or Hylight would work great! hope this helps!

    • @RushVoorhisOutdoors
      @RushVoorhisOutdoors  6 лет назад

      +Kyle Armstrong It takes some messing around with to figure out the settings. Once you get it dialed it its not to bad. But, i dont have the CHIRP transducer so that doesn't make it any easier haha. Like i said once you get past that its cake! I've had some issues with the unit finding the correct depth , but give it a minute amd it figures it out. It also takes a minute for the GPS to find it's location as well. That's the one thing I love about the vexilar is that it's just so simple to use. Thanks for watching and I appreciate it!

    • @nicknicknick11111111
      @nicknicknick11111111 6 лет назад +1

      I know this is an old comment, but since you do not have the chirp transducer is it just acting like a typical sonar?
      I am just curious as to if going with the chirp model versus the sonar is worth the extra coin. I would use it predominantly on the ice.

  • @BlairFishProject

    Awesome breakdown! How do you think the Helix would compare to a higher end Vexilar like an FL20? Sent ya some support 👊

    • @RushVoorhisOutdoors
      @RushVoorhisOutdoors  6 лет назад

      That's a great question man!! The fl-20 has some serious bells and whistles on it, but when it comes down to it it's still just one thing ...a flasher. That being said, a unit such as the Helix with the 2D sonar the GPS is just a whole nother level. Once I started using the 2D sonar I didn't switch back to the Flasher all season. It just gives you so much more depth and details of the underwater picture it's not even funny. I can clearly pick out if there's three or four fish, whereas with the Flasher it just appears to be one giant red bar off the bottom because it just can't give you the separation of the fish off the bottom regardless if you're in Zoom or not. Granted flashers are really simple and really easy to use, but in my opinion it just doesn't beat a 2D sonar screen with GPS. thanks for watching man, tight lines!

    • @BlairFishProject
      @BlairFishProject 6 лет назад +1

      Rush Voorhis Outdoors Those are some good points! I only ask because I use an FL20 and have sat next to my buddies using a Helix but wanted some different opinions. I think the biggest edge of a flasher over the graph is the real time display which can be key on finicky fish. That being said the graph excels when you want to track the fish's behaviour like chasing lakers and whities. But that's just my two cents. Tight lines bud!

    • @RushVoorhisOutdoors
      @RushVoorhisOutdoors  6 лет назад +1

      Blair Fish Project yea flashers are 100% real time, I haven't used the helix 5 ICE version tho, I've herd it's as "real time" as a flasher. My helix is just milliseconds behind but I can tell the difference. Flashers are a little more durable too in my opinion.

    • @RushVoorhisOutdoors
      @RushVoorhisOutdoors  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, yes, and yes! In order to record anything with the autograph or Mark waypoints you have to have an SD card inserted into the unit so it has something to save to. You can also buy a lakemaster chip from Humminbird and get the all the contour lines in topographic maps you could ever want

      +Jameson Nygaard Oohhhhhhhh maybe man!!! I've never used the marcum before, but looks like a badass unit!! Tyler just picked up the FL-18 and that's very similar to the M1. How are you liking the marcum?

      Rush Voorhis Outdoors I'm really liking it. I love how quiet it is and the sensitivity is killer. The zoom is lovely also!

    #Humminbird hAd me mail a ice 35 unit and usps lost the package so Humminbird told me to Kick Rocks. i would love to see them go out of buisness. terrible people. multi million dolar buisness couldnt just send me a new one. and not only that but the unit i sent to them was brand new out of the box and it didnt work. this would have never happened if the unit was checked out first before being sold. BEWARE OF ANYTHING HUMMINBIRD and i will spead this word for the rest of my life

    Okay, pretend we are all dummies and have NEVER used or seen one of these devices, which I haven't, lol. I had NO idea where your jig was or where the fish were. You should take a pointer and point that out to us. You were talking about the jig and seeing fish, and I saw absolutely nothing. Just saying...
