The Helix 5 G2 fishfinder from Humminbird is one of my favorite sonar/chartplotters to use on the ice. It comes packed with a variety of settings that will allow anglers to find fish and watch how fish react to their bait and lures no matter the conditions.
In this video I cover the sonar settings I employ when out on the ice and discuss how to set this fishfinder up for you. Be sure and subscribe and feel free to comment below.
You can purchase this unit below:

Finally someone who goes over what everything looks like on the screen (Even ice build up on the line) AND shows a fish in caught the process without missing a beat. Best video I've seen so far as I await my new Humminbird Helix 7as. Thanks for this video.
You probably dont care but does someone know a tool to get back into an Instagram account..?
I was stupid lost the account password. I would love any help you can offer me!
@Hudson Marcus instablaster ;)
@Leonard Keanu Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm trying it out now.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
A couple more helpful hints to add to this. In the setup menu toggle User Mode from Angler to Custom. This will add more options to display. Next go to the Sonar menu, turn off depth lines, turn off color bar. You gain a bit more screen real estate and the number labels and lines don't overlap your sonar returns. I personally prefer to keep the RTS window on and with the additional options added you can change the width of this window (I prefer medium / amplitude scope).
I would consider setting your depth manually instead of using the auto feature. In my experience the screen can sometimes get a bit jumpy bouncing between two depths, and also getting used to setting the depth manually really allows you to get the most real estate out of your screen as the auto feature doesn't do the best job.
Another recommendation would be to turn the sonar split zoom view on. This is not as useful when fishing shallow water (10ft. or less) but I consider this essential when fishing 20ft. or greater. With Custom mode selected you can customize the width of the zoom window and RTS. Be sure to turn bottom lock on if targeting fish on bottom. Set the zoom height to match your fishing needs. For instance, if you are targeting yellow perch in 30-40ft. of water and the majority of the perch are holding super close to bottom, you won't see much line separation between a fish and your jig. If you set your split zoom to 10ft. suddenly that separation becomes much greater and you'll be able to clearly see a slow moving fish vs and aggressive fish and be much more accurate at adjusting what depth your jig is at. Another scenario would be fishing even deeper say for lakers over 70ft. Set the split zoom to 20-30ft. off bottom and now you can more clearly work a jig with large motions while still being able to see the entire water column on the right side in case a fish cruises by above.
Hands best video out there on the ice helix well done thank you
Great instructional video. I'm going ice fishing for trout in the morning and I can't wait to get this thing finally dialed in after two years if having it now!
This is the video I wanted to know the exact model of this G2. Also what is the corresponding G3 model with similar features.
Thanks for this video Tyler. I got an ice transducer for my Helix 5 last year but had no ice to go out on. Finally have some safe ice here in the Berkshires and am gonna try it out rhis weekend.
Awesome good luck!
I have the Helix 5 G2 on my kayak. I use the ice fishing mode when I'm jigging for trout. Great tips, thanks.
Great video I just ordered the 5 all season very excited to get it and set it up.
The best helix 5 settings video out there. Thanks for doing this
Thank you
This is one of the best user demonstration or how to use videos on RUclips that I have found yet!! I’ve been trying to find a video on what is the best ice fish finder, sonar, flasher, under water camera! I thought I’d see what your video had to offer & it was awesome!! Although I don’t have a hummingbird it was very good user info for someone that does have one!! I do have a Garman 73sv but don’t have it set up for ice fishing!! Don’t no if I should get the ps21 ducer for ice fishing or if I should just get something else!! I sure could use some help but can’t really find anything out there!! Well thanks & I just thought I’d let you no you put out a very very good video on the hummingbird! Awesome job!!
Thanks for getting back to me. I still show it as unavailable. I'll try a different computer to see if there is a security issue. I've watched before and you did a great job.
I purchased the Helix 5 Chirp G2 after seeing your review and knowing that's what I've wanted. I've used it twice and thanks to you was able to use it to catch fish and feel somewhat confident in what I was doing adjusting it. Thanks for this clear easy to understand presentation, much appreciated 👊
That is awesome.
very nice vid - thanks for all the great (and new to me) info!
I am shopping around for a new flasher and this was very impressive. I was strongly considering the Garmin 5cv bundle; but the Hummingbird 5 looks like it is more intuitive to use and might even have more features than the Garmin. Thanks!!!
Great review! I have an old Gen 1, Helix 7, which I repurposed for ice fishing for a couple of seasons, but I love the Ice fishing features of the Gen 2 and newer units! May have to make the switch, one of these days!
I LOVE ICE FISHING
Even with an open water transducer it can be made into a suitable backup/ second ice rig.
Best setup I find for clearer water for that approximate depth I run Gain @ 3 with my chirp set @ 200 KHZ. Anything under ~12' I go 83KHZ obviously.
Obviously chart speed ultra, you got that....
I like to run in flasher/graph/A Scope myself, I grew up with old Marcums.
Just a tip dude, in the hut run the dark mode and dumb the brightness down to 5 or 6...
You will easily get twice as much life out of the battery.
But thing is, every body of water different...
That's always where I start tho for depths between 12-40'
Keep your cone 15° at depth as well. I remove the first 2'-3' of the surface as I can see the fish by that time...
I'm watching it follow my shit up on the Helix right.
I would have set my max depth at 25' so I had less trash on the bottom as well where you were at in 23'
Excellent overview! Thank you!
Great video. Thanks for the details and explanations for the Helix settings.
I might need an upgrade to get the features yours is showing because I don't have a lot of those options or display.
Software update is probably all you need to do
Awesome job explaining everything! Thank you very much!
Great Video! Have you had your unit freeze? Our unit freezes from time to time and we have to unplug the power and restart it to get it to work again. Wondering if you know what might be causing this issue?
On occasion it will momentarily freeze if I remove the transducer from the water for a long time. Have you updated the software recently?
@@spiltmilt I have not updated it. I will try that. Thank you.
I've noticed the gain settings on Humminbird appears to be set a lot higher other units like vexilar or marcum which are usually set to lowest or low third of the max gain setting. Any particular reason why? Confused me for a while when I used my helix 7 si g2n because I assumed I had my settings all wrong if the gain needed to be that high.
Great video! It was super informative.
I have a general question. If the ice transducer sits just below the bottom of the ice, how does the unit calculate the correct depth? Is the depth just calculated from the level of the transducer and you just have to account for the ice thickness? I just wanted to understand this a bit better before my Helix Ice 5 arrived. Thanks.
Its calculated from the transducer to the bottom. You have to account for the ice thickness yourself.
Great video! Thank you so much!
Thanks man, super informative!
Great video! Thank you for the detailed information.
Great instructions buddy!!
This video was great thx ! I just received the identical sonar unit and had it on the ice today for the first time. I could not tune it in at all. I haven’t ordered the 1521 transducer yet so just using the boat CHIRP/DI transducer hoping to have it work enough until I get the ice transducer. Do you have any suggestions to help with that? I would, like to use it before I get the 1521 transducer!!
You just earned yourself a sub, great explanation.
So do u use the same transducer that come with it whennu bought it an how did u get the little case for it I have the same one I live in mn an season's is coming would really like to kno what I need to buy so I'm ready
I'm not the creator but I can answer this. Most likely, your unit came with a boat transducer. You will need to purchase an ice transducer separately. The case can also be purchased separately. Another option would be to buy the transducer/portable case together from a site like Amazon.
Which video do you talk about how to use a flasher?
ruclips.net/video/9C8p8XCbo7o/видео.html
@@spiltmilt Thanks so much
As you may know the xI 9 1521 is nowhere to be found so I am using the transducer from my boat. How does that differentiate from using the ice fishing transducer?
Here you. Hope this answers your question ruclips.net/video/98zTnVDFRg4/видео.html
Can you use the ducer that comes with the unit for ice fishing
You could but its not ideal. Better to buy the ice transducer for this model.
Are you running a lithium battery? If so what brand/amp? Thanks in advance
I am running a Dakota Lithium 10ah battery (amzn.to/34evW8Z). I am getting 27 hours of run time at room temp.
i dont see alarms icon on your screen wonder why its not showing? also how can you turn sound off thanks
If you purchase the ICE helix will it come with the transducer and cords for ice fishing?
Yes
Spilt Milt Productions thanks
Spilt Milt Productions also how long would you estimate the battery life?
Depends on the battery and temperature. I cover that in this video. ruclips.net/video/7gqw8XeG5q0/видео.html
Thank you so much on your videos
Awesome video! Thank you!
Why would you use sonar mode or flasher mode, or both same time? Does it matter. Thanks. Great visieo
is the humminbird only for ice fishing or can be used for any season of the year?
I use mine year round on open water and on the ice.
Thank you
awesome video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing what you know!
Does the ice helix 5 tell you water temperature? And also does it tell you depths of the contour lines on the chart map?
Yes it does both those things
What about fish alarm? What is the chirp I.R? Good video thanks 🙏
I do not run fish alarm. Chirp IR allows you to filter out nearby competing ice anglers transducers. Simply scroll thru the six IR settings that give you the most clarity
Spilt Milt Productions re watched and paid more attention to the I.R part. Thankyou🙏
If it helps to remember, IR (I think) stands for "Interference Reduction."
Thank you for all the information! Is this unit works in metric unit also? I want to buy one for a friend in Europe.
Yes can easily be converted to metric in the settings menu
Spilt Milt Productions Thank you very much!
Have you found a way to zoom in on GPS? (Our display has our waypoint the same size as the lake we are fishing on!)
I just use the "+" or "-"
Excellent video thanks.
Excellent post thanks for sharing
How do you do the software updates?
ruclips.net/video/7iB9k0fgArM/видео.html
Is there a way to check battery life on the screen
Yes it shows up with the latest software update on the flasher screen only. However, its only accurate for lead acid not lithium
On sonar mode what is the number under the sunrise/sunset time? In this video it is displayed 1/20 I’m clueless
Date.
Your other screen says it’s the 18th and on mine it never matches the date ether. I can’t figure it out it’s about to drive me crazy. I’ve been trying to figure it out all season lol
Haha well dang I'm stumped.
@@fishinginidaho7308 Sun and moon phase info.
Mine won't let me do the flasher setting in split screen with the graph, is there something I have to change or update the software?
I have the helix 5 di gps v. 1.280
thought I had gotten the chirp one
Yes a software update should fix it. ruclips.net/video/7iB9k0fgArM/видео.html
how does this unit perform in 100 plus feet when ice fishing?
Very well. Good separation on larger jigs
How about the Helix 5 DI gen 1 it has different format? What's best on that one?
I'm not familiar with that model.
Thanks for the info, Great videos..
If you don't use the flasher do you need an ice transducer?
I'm guessing you don't use it?
The flasher setting is just a software setting. Ice fishing transducers give you better target resolution but aren't necessary. See this video ruclips.net/video/98zTnVDFRg4/видео.html
Do you know how to fix the white screen?
What white screen?
Very good video. I'll try some of this.
У меня есть эхолот humminbird helix 7 chirp mega si gps g3.Могу его использовать зимой как флэшер?
I have the Helix 5 G2 Chirp and can't get it to go into Ice fishing mode. It'll say its on but none of the features work, and it doesn't reboot and go into Ice mode like I've seen on so many videos ..not sure what to do? It may be a defective unit?
I had the same issue, until i turned my "SONAR ON"
Mine did the same. I had to do a software update. Works fine now.
When im in shallow( under six feet) my depth bounces back and forth. And i get bad interference when im in weeds. Same thing, Depth bounces up and down. How do I set my depth?
You can manually set depth on the first menu.
awesome video thank you
Just purchased a Helix 5. Your setup video is unavailable. Can you make it available again please?
You are having trouble with this video? It's working fine for me.
Thank you
I think you are backwards on your clear/max modes. I believe it's saying hit arrow to go to clear/max mode and not showing what mode you are in. Atleast that's how Ive always set my birds
Yes I did mix that up in here upon review.
I think you were initially running clear mode and confused yourself, when you opened the menu clear mode was selected. The results you got are actually odd because it should be the reverse, max mode should get all the clutter and clear mode should remove the clutter.
👍👍
great instructional..thank you
Seems like a bunch of bs to do. Im thinking about just getting a vexilar flx20
Have fun using it on open water.
@@spiltmilt I only ice fish
Great video! Thanks😊
Are you running a lithium battery? If so what brand/amp? Thanks in advance
