In this tutorial, we will show you step-by-step instructions on how to disable trending searches on Windows 10. With clear explanations and visuals, you'll be able to follow along and successfully remove this feature in no time.
STEP-BY-STEP
1. Type “regedit” in the search box and press “enter” to open the registry editor.
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
3. Create a new Key called “Explorer” under "Windows" (right click "Windows"; New; Key)
4. Create a DWORD value under "Explorer" called "DisableSearchBoxSuggestions" (right click "Explorer"; New; DWORD (32-bit) Value)
5. Assign a value of 1 to this newly created value (double click "DisableSearchBoxSuggestions" then type 1 in the "value data:" box. Make sure Hexadecimal is selected and click "OK")
6. “Restart your computer” and let’s see if this worked

Works for me in January 2024. Thank you so much sir, that thing was absolutely infuriating and intrusive. My PC is my home, I don't want to see this crap each time I search stuff, like come on Microsoft.

also, it worked for my newer laptop and not my older one (pre-ryzen 2015) ! just wanted to say so in case it didn't work for someone else - i wonder if it's to do with the age of the laptop?

Thank You. I was searching for how to do this, and the only thing I could find was a download link for a reg file that is supposed to be what you just demonstrated how to create manually. I'm 99% sure it was legit and perfectly fine, but I'm always leery of downloading anything like that from a site I'm not very familiar with. This was just as fast and easy as that would have been anyway.
Always better to manually do it yourself!

Awesome thanks! I knew I could use the same reg edit method I used to shut off cortana to do this. The taskbar menu method didnt have the Highlights option. Its like whenever someone figures out how to turn something forced in windows off, if people actually turn it off, windows patch your ability to turn it off. They removed the option in the taskbar menu in an update, I know it. People could shut trending searches off from the taskbar menu in November 2022. January 2023? You gotta do this.
You're welcome! Happy this method worked for you. You are right - I know I disabled the "highlights" through the taskbar menu awhile ago - but the other day I tried to "enable" it and it's as if the "highlights" never even existed 🤷♂

after restarting my PC, I came back here to say that these annoying searches had disappeared :3 It always showed me shocking news or some trash things, and finally I am free from this.

Great but how do you get rid of the rest of the crap like "suggested" and all of the other stuff?
Windows permissions --> general --> toggle on/off "show me suggested content in the Settings app"
It is off. In windows search I get "Suggested" and "Top Apps". I dont want them shown.@@kwoners
Aagh! Don't bother if you are part of a corporation. Need Admin privileges to edit registry. Hate this from MS on my workstation machine.

Nope. I did exactly what you said, and the trending search b.s. is still there. I even had the registry editor open and followed your instructions exactly. No change.

@@kwoners No, I did that. I made a mistake and left a space in the name of the DisableSearchBoxSuggestions value. I fixed that and now the stupid trending 💩 is gone. BTW, if that's what's REALLY "trending," then there's not a lot of hope for this country... 🤨

I follow the steps exactly but unfortunately I did not get any change in the search bar results.
This is for Windows 10 - not sure if this method works for Win 11 (if that's your case).
This works in Windows 10. Restart Explorer or reboot your PC so that the registry settings take effect.
Now, my search box is quite longer and takes more space than it used to be.

I have two monitors with a different account on each. One doesn't have the those searches and I don't remember how I stopped them but the other still does.
