I did the same thing a couple of months ago with my old record vice on my oak workbench. It works a treat

I think the previous commenter was correct about the potential for racking though so I’m going to make a set of spacers to use in the other end when clamping at one end only.
      It was a fun build.

@@CaptainofmyShed. Nice job Mate ! Check out a YT short by by the Wood Whisperer titled 3 ways to make your wood working vise suck less…He shows a cool flip stop made with multiple sections of MDF shims.

      Yeah that’s the plan!

Don't ever crank it down tight with something in only one side near the end. That'd likely be enough to pull one of those old screws out. Surprised that you didn't use a 53A fir this since it would be stronger and have more opening after loss.

I hear you Fredio, and you’re correct. I use a spacer at the other end if I ever need to put an uneven load on the vice. I intend to make a series of shims bolted at one end so I can quickly match the width of material being clamped and avoid undue stress. Also I was given the bench with the 52 1/2 attached so I didn’t have a choice in vice but so far it’s been a treat to use. I’ll check out the 53A for potential future upgrades.

@@CaptainofmyShed Yeah, as long as you're cognisant of it, no big deal. 53A is only marginally wider and more opening, but when you're losing so much to the "beam" (let's be real here, ha ha) it makes a difference. You were lucky to inherit such a good vice. The 52.5 is generally considered the sweet spot. 53 is less common, though I have 2, one old like your 52.5 and one newer pre 2002 version with the cylindrical hub rather than ornate hub. Not worth changing to, and depending what the other vice is for, maybe the wrong choice anyway, but never a bad choice. The 52 and other smaller wood vices aren't great though - too small and not enough opening.

Probably asking a bit much from the poor thing: you’re losing a crêpeton of clamping strength towards the ends, and if you clamp something all the way out there, it’s a big strain on the screws.

Never fear. I have a plan for the racking issue by making flip stop so I can clamp a piece of same thickness at the other end. This is a well established method and the record is plenty tough enough once the rack is removed.
