Thanks, I was chuffed. Going to make a couple more now!
Same thing happened to my saw. It slowly got so stiff I couldn’t raise or lower it. In frustration I broke the handle trying to raise it. It’s a shame the rest of the saw is great.
If you watch my second video on this saw, there is a fix, involving some hydraulic ram lubrication. Worked a treat! Hopefully you still have the saw!
@@CaptainofmyShed I did and thank you. I’m going to buy a new one and keep it lubed this time. My old one had some other small issues.
Living in the US I don’t listen to channels that are in metric only.
Ah OK. I feel like this is part of a much bigger conversation 😂
Curious. You're using some screws, some nails. Why? Cute that you have the family's help.
Nails in places which don’t necessarily need the strength of join. They’re just quicker sometimes.
The fence clips on upside down under the table on the left side off the table saw the spot you put it is for the upper gaurd with secondary dust collection port so If you get a y for your vacuum you can use double dust collection
Had to dig out my manual to check before I said anything 😅 but on page 11 under dust collection it says for best results use a Y adapter to connect both upper and lower dust collection ports because the upper collection port should stop a lot of the dust that is causing the raise an lower arm to malfunction from dropping into the saw
That really turned out sweet. Nice work, young man.
Thank you kindly!
My kind of video lol
Thanks !
I learned so much about the UK in this video, never heard of knife carry restrictions before. Awesome work!
Thanks very much! And thanks for taking a minute to watch me back.
Nice work, great Christmas present for some one. Great video take care
Cheers. I think I’ve decided who’s getting this one but I intend to do a couple more.
That scale is very very cool! Unrelated note, love the hat, could I ask where its from?
It’s a Kangol hat. Bought from hatsandcaps.co.uk It’s pretty old and starting to fall apart so not sure how much longer it will be making an appearance! Sad times!
That's not a knife.... Oh no wait it is. Lovely work!
Cheers mate!
good job from montreal canada
Thanks! I visited Montreal once. A very cool place!
This is so dissapointing, I had a record cabinet saw withe same problem the winding handle just fell apart and I just got rid.Bought a bosch thinking it would be fine and it's exactly the same as this in fact it's unusable now. The thing is the rise and fall is crucial to get he most out of a table saw. It's outrageous that this can fail. I was going to go for the dewalt but I also glad I saw your video. The search continues..... this should not happen.
Don’t write it off yet. There is a solution I demonstrate in the next episode to this video. Find the right kind of llubrication and the problem is solved completely and easily.
Great looking bench. What a score!
Yeah I absolutely love it now. One of my favourite “tools” in the shed!
You might get some good information from Rob Cosman’s sharpening videos.
Yeah I agree, he has some great videos. I think I’ll watch again as a refresher.
I had the same issue twice and sent them back
Interesting. Did you finally get a good one?
17:00 the way you’re holding the chisel looks awkward, with your left hand controlling the angle. You appear to be right handed so I’d recommend gripping the chisel in you right hand as if it’s a pen with the shaft resting on the web between thumb and forefinger. With this grip you’ll have more control and you can put pressure on the apex with your left hand. You’re stropping of the plane blade looked ok but the 2 knives were hard to watch. Stropping should be done at the same angel and direction as sharpening, not that slicing motion you were employing at almost 90° to the blade, that will damage your leather in no time.
Thanks for the tips. I think probably a hand held strop would be easier for the knives. I’ll practice with your chisel holding suggestion and see how it feels. Do you mind me asking what experience backs up your advice so myself and others reading can have confidence in the source? Thanks again. M
@@CaptainofmyShed I hate it when people introduce themselves with their expertise, but you did ask😆. I'd call myself an enthusiastic armature, rather than a professional, coz I do most of my sharpening for free or a token £1 to cover my material costs. I’m a sharp tool obsessive that has sharpened by various methods for 45years for my friends, family neighbours etc, now I’m retired from my day job and in my 60’s I sharpen knives, chisels, axes, machetes, swords (less of that now they’re illegal in the UK), plane blades, nail clippers, scissors, hairdressing sheers, mandolin blades, saws, hedge sheers, lawnmower blades, scissors, secateurs etc. I have a few private paying customers and the rest are free for volunteers and customers at 3 food banks and a commercial kitchen that makes 30,000 meals a week for the food banks, so as you can imagine their knives take a beating. Shaving sharp is my minimum standard and when I’ve run out of hair on my arms and lower legs I slice the thinnest cigarette papers. My favourite is putting a mirror-polished edge on whatever I’m sharpening (especially axes), totally unnecessary but I enjoy seeing the look on the customer's face when I whip out a chopper that was chipped and rusty-edged and it's transformed into something not only functional but beautiful. I also repair knives with broken tips and chips and have started to teach people too. For most of my life, I've freehand sharpened but in the last 5 years, I've largely switched to fixed-angle machines, whetstone grinders (similar to Tormek but a quarter the price) and belt a grinder for restoration and convex sharpening.
@@CaptainofmyShed I forgot to say, I'm subbed to literally dozens of sharpening channels but if I could only recommend 2 it would be Paul Sellars for woodworking tools, look for “Sharpening a chisel in under a minute for a no-nonsense quick method similar to yours, and for a more in-depth lesson look up “Preparing and sharpening a woodworking chisel” and Outdoors 55 for freehand sharpening of knives. You'll notice Paul keeps his strop separate from his stones. This lets him use it in the vice or hold it freehand.
@@thechumpsbeendumped.7797 to each his own.
@@CaptainofmyShed I'm not sure what you mean by that?
maybe you just get a bad batch. I free hand sharpening my blades for 5 years with no issue, but I like the banggood jig which is no no-brainer to use. the result is pretty much the same
I own that honiguide for my chisels. Works excellent. Think you where unlucky with your delivery. There is only one point for improvement. The brass wheels should have been full PA6 nylon. I don't like the direct brass-stone contact. The rubber o-rings that are included are a bit flimpsy. Have ordered a roll of PA6 and some seperate ball bearings that I want to add in. Need a lathe to bring to size. Did not buy the distance block. Build one myself from scraps. Just as easy and consistent. Happy user. Might buy a second one so I do not have to swap wheels Inside outside for small/wide chisels.
I think youre right that i was unlucky. Unfortunately the customer service was poor too. I have experienced the good and the bad with Banggood.
Same happy user. I got the whole set and am keen to buy another honing jig just for the chisel. I regularly flatten my waterstone, so brass wheels aren't a too big issue
Banggood price = Banggood quality
Agree to a point, i have had a couple of things from Banggood which were excellent quality. This could be a great set if not for that one flaw which probably is a batch issue. I think I got unlucky.
I looke dat the jig you showed, but it looked so easy then i know its difficult. I did buy a honing guide, now i wonder what kind of lube you use. I saw a bit of white foam, so thats why i ask. Thank you again for a nice video! Stay safe.
The spray I use is just glass cleaning fluid.
@@CaptainofmyShed Ok, tnx will try that.
I like your take on the sharpening station. I've never been a fan of recessing a trio of stones in a board, because it makes working the back of the blade awkward...your idea of having an overhang is excellent and I shall shamelessly nick that idea for my version of a sharpening station. As for methods of sharpening, the very best one is the one that gives you the edge you want with the amount of effort that you are prepared to put into it. I've tried free hand, and I can't get on with it, but a simple, old Eclipse honing guide with a couple of diamond stones has worked perfectly for me for thirty years.
Yeah I do say at the end of the video that for my chisels and planes I ended up reverting to a cheap honing guide for the primary bevels. Thanks for the comment.
Your name is not really Captain Mikey. Anyway, I’m quite glad to see a bunch of honing guides on the market - don’t know about this one, but I’m getting something out of the cheap one I have, and I made a pretty angle guide for it out of wood. Works fine, and I use it as a helper: I always check the bevel during sharpening, and if it’s off, I adjust by lightly pressing down on either corner with a finger. I just don’t use my chisels and planes enough to get good at freehand sharpening, and I think honing guides get a bit of a bad rep - they’re quite useful.
If you watch to the end. A slog I know. I do concede this point and have used a cheap honing guide for the primary bevels on my planes and chisels.
And you are correct my name isn’t Captain Mikey really. 🤫
Hi what size is the size of the actual saw please as i want to make my own cabinet for it Cheers
I think I cover that in the video but if not the product detail is linked in the description with all the dimensions and specification. Sorry, I would go to the shed with a tape measure but im not at home for a couple of days.
Cheers found it now footprint was on the website 😂😂
Thank you for putting this together. Factual, fast paced, articulate, informational. I now have some facts to help make a decision. God bless, Miles
Glad it was helpful!
If you don't want to pay that much: Mini combination wrenches and a drill.
Where do the combo wrenches come into play?
@@CaptainofmyShed I think you can figure it out.
Im 'trying' to calibrate mine now. Running those gauges through the miter slots is a waste of time because the cross brace rocks on the surface as its pushed across which isnt flat. Bloody aluminium tops!
I had a similar issue with my home made guage. (The gauge was out in my case) ended up pushing it through and using finger pressure on two points of the gauge to keep it constantly in contact with one side of the slot. Not perfect but got me close enough.
The fence stores under the table, on the rail. That's slot you've got it in is for the blade guard.
I’m not so sure. On unpacking the fence was stored by the supplier, where I demonstrated and it fits perfectly.
@@CaptainofmyShedhe's right. It'll clip on the inside of the rail in the same way it clips above.
@@DronedLove fair play. I don’t own that saw any more. It was a good product though!
I've watched a number of reviews.. noticing differences from the US model.
Brilliant
That is about. Mine has 2 areas for dust extraction! Bought mine about 6 months ago in the USA.
There is a second episode to this where I find a solution to the problem. It’s obvious to some but not me. I used a decent lube for hydraulic shocks.
Use compressed air to remove most of the caked on saw dust and then use a dry lubricant such as silicone while being careful not to spray on surfaces that wood may contact. The compressed air is the most effective way and quickest method of removing sawdust within all the small crevices that are difficult to remove by stiff brush alone.
Excellent! I have exactly this dowel plate on the way. Good job with patching up the router damage -- it happens.
Yeah it’s a handy tool.
Love this!! This video was super helpful. You've inspired me to get my hands dirty and start building 👷♂
Awesome, glad it was useful!
Happy with the Axmister table saw? Been thinking about getting one, instead of a bigger one
Yeah, very happy. At the price point I think it’s tough to beat. The Dewalt site saws are also very good but the Axminster is so quiet by comparison.
@@CaptainofmyShed yea. But this must be a proper step up from the DeWalt/Bosch construction saws?
@@ScandinavianHandcraft I would say it is overall a better workshop machine but not vastly. It is much more quiet. The cast iron table is very stable so it’s a bit more accurate. I’d say the fence is worse, and I’m going to upgrade that. The ability to upgrade is better too.
@@CaptainofmyShedThanks for your opinion. I'm thinking about getting the Laguna fusion 1 instead or maby Axmister AP254SB.
What a nice video! And what an excellent workshop your father has! BTW, is your father Dutch by any chance?
Yes he and I are both Dutch. And yes he has used a small space beautifully!
thanks for the review, im off to amazon to order one
You won’t regret it!
Great idea. Plus a brave n a strong back. That lift beats all lifting in olympics, bc you are not a professional athlete... are you?
Haha. Extreme tiddly winks champion back in the nineties I’ll have you know 😜
I like it. I’m going to appropriate the idea and make a couple of small mods for my purposes. Thanks for that. On a side note, that band saw looks as if it has the added benefit of clearing up any constipation you may be suffering from.
Using tape myself to secure the hose to various sanders ect, just had an Axminster dust extractor delivered so in the throws of upgrading the workshop , this is certainly an option, great video and excellent information. Thanks
Been using it a while now and still very happy. Glad you found it helpful!
Should mention I've ordered a set from Amazon, they arrived tomorrow. Again thanks for the info 👍
This is awesome! Thank you! :)
You're very welcome!
Thanks for the helpful video. I'm feeling a summer shed project coming on when the UK weather finally improves. Are you finding any issues with condensation and rust yet? Any thoughts about ventilation?? This my biggest worry.
Nearly 2 years on and there’s very little in the way of condensation or rust. It is still a shed though so probably not as dry as a fully insulated out building but better than sitting outside. It’s not airtight around the doors at all so plenty of ventilation through those gaps.
I like the forcing the wood glue into the joint using air pressure. That is the first time I saw anybody doing that.
I cant claim it as my own idea. I think I saw it done just using a straw and blowing down it once. Works really well!
Lying in bed with Covid and searching for a shed build video. This is just want I want but half the length incl the green roof. Question…how do u manage drainage for the roof? Now I just need to convince my hubby to let me at it 😊 very good video.
What a fun little project. Pushing the glue in with air pressure is a clever idea. I'm going to use that one day. Looking forward to your next video. Take care.
Thanks Gary. Yeah pushing the glue with air is a handy trick. Glad you enjoyed it !
@@CaptainofmyShed I just commented on the same. I didn't wait to read the comments.
I have the AC216TS and the riving knife and poorly designed clamp to the blade guard drove me mad as I also needed to do a series of groove cuts. Like you I cut the top off the riivng knife, not the original but a £25 new one from Axminster Tools in Axminster. It is set 3mm lower than the crown of the blade. The original riving knife and guard can be refixed for normal through cuts. As to the poor clamp design that gets in the way of undertaking narrow cuts, well I'll give that some thought later.
Yeah. It’s fiddly to adjust the riving knife and a more accessible quick release knife would be ideal but once it’s set up it works well and overall I’m very happy with the saw.
Ahoy Captain, I appreciate the time spent on making this video…..Thanking you, as I hope to purchase a “lightly” used model locally from another maker and your review has helped. Cheers dude.
Brilliant, great news. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. There’s a good video on calibrating the record version of this machine which might be useful depending on how well the seller has maintained it. Great machine.
How refreshing to see someone actually giving you the conclusion in 1 min. I stayed for, and enjoyed, the whole video.
Glad you liked it and it was useful.
