    This Roubo Workbench is one of the most complex pieces Ive ever made and by no means was that intentional. I though it would be done in a matter of weeks yet it took two and a half months of non stop construction. Not to mention the amount of time planning and editing. But all the features turned out as I'd hoped if not better.
    This bench takes full advantage of the standard tail vise and leg vise but also incorporates a moxon vise, shoulder vice and pattern makers vise, as well as a pop up gap stop and a hidden wheel system which isn't common on a bench like this.
    Even though this workbench is quite over the top, as mentioned in the video this bench was an exploration of ideas as well as an enjoyable process in which I'll always remember. Shop furniture doesn't always have to be quick and to the point, it can also be an experience.
    One of my main objectives with this bench is to hopefully trigger ideas within yourself to maybe incorporate into your own workflow .

      Let's not go too far. Engineering is something very specific involving calculations using tertiary level physics and math. Let's settle on well crafted functional piece of art...

      You're thinking of professional engineers and their job duties. As such, you are not wrong, that does describe one form of engineering, but not the only form (goddamn engineers with their uber-literal takes on everything, and their binary thinking). Engineering has multiple meanings in and outside of the profession, however, even the ECPD defines engineering as:
      "The creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation and safety to life and property."
      And that bench definitely fits the bill.

    I have been woodworking since the late 60's and this is the most impressive woodworking bench design and build I have ever seen. Truly the "Mother of all Benches"!!
    Not only was it a build that I will never forget, but it truly can become a new standard for many to emanate for years to come.
    You have truly built something that many strive for but never achieve. I just feel fortunate to have viewed this video and experienced what it documented.

    In art school, on my first day at a drawing class, my professor asked us to open our brand new sketch books and draw a large X on the first sheet. This was to take away the stigma of the virgin quality of the paper; it was meant to be drawn on, explored! This may sound sadistic but you should place a hammer blow on the bench top to exorcise the fear of damaging it. You are a brilliant designer and a master craftsman. Keep up the good work!

    • @jerryhoogeveen
      @jerryhoogeveen 7 месяцев назад +127

      I was so worried about damaging the top when I built my bench that i was scared to use it for a while. Made it completely useless. Then, one day a chisel slipped and took out a chunk of the top. I was sad at first but then happy because I couldn't actually use the bench! Good advice here

    • @markswenson1194

      Terrible advice! Let it happen organically. Work like you work because, although your woodworking might appear otherwise, you're not perfect, and it will happen at some point. In the meantime, enjoy your creation, because it is a thing of beauty! Well done.

    I last did proper woodwork (and metalwork) back in high school in the early eighties. I've done a fair amount of tables, bookshelves, basic stuff. This video is absolutely jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring, dozens of levels above what I haven't even dreamed about. Thank you for creating this masterpiece. Pedulla Studio is definitely now at the top of my youtube woodworkers list. Thank you for sharing your amazing skills and techniques with slobs like me!

    Your sense of joy has the power to create an ocean of admiration... the passion you have for carpentry and creating unique and unrepeatable objects [even if you repeat it will always have a distinctive detail, I believe] is impossible not to be perceived by who watches your videos. Lucky of those who can have a piece created by you... I'm excited to see the new desk. Accept a hug from the antipodes, Lisbon, Portugal, EU

    Wow, this is indeed a bucket list bench. There is nothing about this bench that is overkill. We need to be reminded that what we do as creative humans is as much about the object that we create as it is how it is created. You good sir are a reminder to me that I can and need to spend time to create the rools that I need to aid in my creativity. Thanks for the reminder as I embark on rebuilding my workshop over the next couple of months!

    Spectacular attention to detail. I respect that not everyone is in a position to spend this much time or money on a workbench, but these videos inspire me to keep pushing myself to learn and develop skills for finer workmanship.
    A never ending process.

    I'm not even a wood worker, and I watched the whole thing! NEVER be apologetic about pushing your skill to it's absolute limits, even if it's an intellectual exercise. I feel like a large part of our history for craftsmanship focused around ornate and extravagant artistic expression, and only recently have we focused on absolute bare minimum build quality.
    This utterly inexcusable work of art embodies that highest degree of expressionism and functionality, and it was a PLEASURE to watch. A true master of the craft!

    Absolutely stunning. I love the solution for mobility, I am going to look at my Roubo with an eye to retrofitting something similar. Ditto for easy removal of the split top gap stop. And I love the pop out dogs on the face to support items in the leg vise.

    This type of video is why things like RUclips and Patreon can exemplify the best qualities of human behavior. I just got to spend 45 minutes watching a master at his craft, learning, growing, and pushing boundaries. A craftsman should honor his tools, and you have done that here in spades. Bravo.

    My man, you are an inspiration to me and I would expect, anyone that works with wood. Your workbench is a piece of art in itself. The level of craftsmanship is off the chain. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and showing off your talent to the world. I'm sure some people will think this is "over the top" for a workbench, but personally I can fully relate to why you would want to not only show off your skills to potential clients, but also make a tool that you do the work with and a tool you enjoy using on a daily basis. Well done sir, you are a true craftsman.

    Hi 👋, Pedulla Studio, I have been watching your RUclips for quite some time, very impressed with your work, especially this bench,
    I went back to the UK about 10 days ago , a friend of mine, and it was somebody that was selling some bits and pieces, i.e. wood, turning tools and a very large workbench, a Rubio, But somebody has changed the legs on it, so it can be taken apart very easy, I paid £50 for it that’s all they wanted, I am picking it up in about five or six weeks time as I’ve got to go back to the UK again, stay safe, look forward to seeing your next projects,

    That is one beautiful workbench. Love all the handy tips you included with the explanation of the individual elements. I'm definitely taking apart my moxon vice to sort the racking issue the way you demonstrated. 👍🏾

    • @richs5422
      @richs5422 7 месяцев назад +3

      The brass rods in the moxon vise might be a weak point. You may wish to consider hardened stainless steel rods to resist the high bending force, attaching them to the moveable face of the vise with hardened steel shoulder bolts that go through the rods and then a fair way into the moveable face. This joint needs to resist a large amount of torque.

    Wow! Excellent and inspiring build! I'm tired of seeing the same old ultra-utilitarian get 'er done videos on RUclips. This build as with all your other ones is refreshing. It amazes me how many individuals, including craftsmen, devalue aesthetics, seeing function as a paramount over form. I see the opposite. An artifact with little to no form is a mere commodity devoid of humanness.

    From the design of the old Disston hand saws to the Studley tool case, woodworkers have always expressed their love of craft in their tools. Design doesn't detract from our tools, it improves everything we do with them. You've done a beautiful job with your bench, and I learned a few things along the way (as I am sure you did.) Thank you, and congratulations on a job well done!

    I wept.
    I'm 49, and only started getting into woodworking about six months ago. Even if I eventually get good enough to create something this amazing, I'd only get a few years of use from it. But just knowing that this exists makes me happy. Actually, that's not quite right: knowing that a human wanted this to exist, and had the capability to bring it into reality, makes me happy. It's the same kind of joy and awe I get from seeing an expertly-written bit of code, or a world-class circus artist, or reading a book that shows me something different every time I come back to it, or getting to the end of a Hannah Gadsby show and appreciating the final twist that ties the whole thing together.
    Thank you for making this, and thank you for taking the time to show it. I'll be getting inspiration from this for years.

    Dude!!! Your work is beautiful. As I watched the scene where the camera panned across the base, revealing the brass fixture of the lift mechanism, I literally gasped! I would never have expected such an elegant detail in the design of a functional, hardworking piece of shop furniture. But then this "worbench" design also includes a breathtaking section of burled, veneer with a finish resembling that of musical instrument... Unbelievable effort, and well worth it!

    This is sublime, the grain pop on the chop is incredible! Also some of your solutions are absolute genius, the two I liked the most (& am going to integrate into mine when I build it) is the wooden pop-up dogs and the pop-up gap stop

  • @Dovetail-Artisan
    @Dovetail-Artisan 6 месяцев назад +1

    The form and function of your bench is to PERFECTION! there are too many details I love to comment on. The chamfer legs with burl veneer is easy on the eyes. The slight arch on the bottom rail is gracefully done. The chamfer around the shark dovetails really punches out the detail. My most favorite statement you make is "if you take pride in the shop tools and furniture, you can sure bet you will take pride in every piece that comes out of it. Pride is all I get out of watching this, you are a true Craftsman my friend.
    Blessings,

    Nick it's not overkill in any way , I'd say for a perk of being a perfectionist by nature , I remember watching Matt Estlea's Burtha Build in 2017 if memory serves which is a beautiful piece of work , nobody had really touched on the Roubo Bench before that on YT, but after watching this Build of yours pal , it shows what many years of hard work and graft can evole into especially when looking at something to fit ur specific needs and the time spent in its final creation , the effort and perfectionism that you have infused into what can only be called artistry shows in spades the direction your craft is going pal.
    The algorithm God's only a week or so ago popped u on my feed and I've finally got to watch ur Build in full haha , and now one has the joy of watching ur other 20 videos u have made .
    I'd love to support u on Patreon pal but I'm in the UK fella and we can't afford to keep ourselves warm with the cost of living at the moment lol , but hopefully one day pal , until then I'll have to gleam some knowledge from yourself and your truly amazing talent Nick , please keep up the jawdropping work , I'm so looking forward to watching ones back catalogue and waiting for more to come haha. 👍👍👍
