- In this video we look at the two very popular mounting options Weaver and Picatinny. We show you different features and what to look out for with each system.
A Picatinny Rail is a full length rail of slots, with a 5.23mm wide slot every 10mm. Whereas Weaver Bases have usually 4 (sometimes 3) slots of 4.57mm wide, and are fitted either side of the ejection port.
Both have the same cross-section profile and is 21mm wide. But as the slots are different widths, picatinny being the wider of the two, you will find that Weaver Mounts will fit onto both Weaver and Picatinny Rails/Bases, but Picatinny Mounts will not fit onto Weaver Rails/Bases.
We would always suggest a picatinny rail when mounting a One-Piece Mount or Night Vision Mount because these mounts can't fit over the ejection port gap and don't align with the weaver slots.
-------------
PRO's of Weaver Bases:
- Neater Appearance
- More space around the ejection port
- Less Weight
-------------
CON's of Weaver Bases:
- Less slots, so less options of mounting positions
- Very unlikely to be able to switch scopes on different rifles
- One-Piece Mounts will not fit across the bases and do not align with the slots.
-------------
PRO's of Picatinny Rail:
- More slots, so more mounting positions
- You can fit One-Piece Mounts and Night Vision Mounts to it
- You can interchange scopes across from Picatinny to Picatinny
-------------
CON's of Picatinny Rail:
- More Weight than Weaver Bases

Thank you for the information. This is the only video that actually answers the question. All of the other videos spend 5 minutes saying nothing except "the slots are different".
Great informative video. Thank you!
Wanting to put a SUSAT Scope on a Picatinny Rail, thanks for the informative video!
Thank you for the helpful information.
Good information, thank you.
Simple and nice .
Thank you for this great explanation 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Finally a common sense explanation
Great stuff appreciate it!
Thank you now all is clear
Thank you so much!!
Glad it helped!
Can you make a review video of the S&L Tactical?
What about Warne vertical-split quick detach rings (Weaver, that will fit in Picatinny slots)? The cross-bar is removeable, & then you can have it installed on one ring only, & then the issue of the spacing matching up is no longer? Thanks for the video :-)
Yes, that would be a way to overcome this. A set of rings with only 1 recoil bar would in theory be fine when switch across between weaver bases as long as they ring without a recoil bar has sufficient area to latch onto. Good thinking :)
Hi Allan ,Whats size screws for picaniny rail ,ror Rem 700.Torx or Xex ?
Hi Jonas, Sorry for the late reply. The brands Contessa and Recknagel, which we supply, both use Torx head screws for their rails. A lot of other brands use Torx, but you may find the counter sink and head size differs, so you'll find that screws from one brand probably won't fit another rail.
@@alanrhonemedia many thanks mate.
Picatinny style for most modern or aggressive-look stock assault style/semi and then weaver for anything bolt action, old school, or classy!!
I agree, the weaver bases do look better if there is an option. But on some occasions, a picatinny rail is needed if you have a certain scope and on that instance it cannot be helped.
Well if you put weaver rings on picatinny you will lose zero after recoil or bump because tolerances between slots are too high..
what's the 69 mean?
Sorry, where is 69 mentioned and I'll let you know if I can?
Very helpful! Thank you.
