It was first made at the Leland Motel. It was made for lunch breaks of downtown Springfield’s workers. Don’t knock it til you try it! It’s layered bread/toast, meat (hamburger, chicken, and ham are popular) French fries and cheese sauce...the cheese sauce isn’t just cheese, it’s made with a roux, mustard and other assorted items. Some places put chili theirs and others use different levels of spicy heat! They really are good. I usually get a ponyshoe because they are smaller. I don’t get them very often because they are a lot good and calories.
Strange they would highlight a Cuban sandwich in Miami when the Cuban originated in Ybor City, in Tampa, FL over 100 years ago. They've always been pressed for as long as I've lived and I was born, raised and still live in Tampa for almost 64 years. Mayo is not natural to the original Cuban sandwich. The original was roast pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on Cuban bread. Sometimes salami is included because of the Italian population that also lived in Ybor. The best Cuban bread is from La Segunda Central Bakery.
I think Po'boys are more iconic, but let's have a shout out for the Muffuletta, (olive salad, provolone, and various cold-cut meats on a huge round muffuletta bread cut in half). It's a New Orleans original and favorite!

How could I have forgotten the Nook?!!! My guess is that these restaurants paid to be on this list. If any of the REAL places were interviewed, they would've mentioned each other and HK wouldn't have even been in the conversation.

I think the Italian beef would have been a good option but I like that it was the horseshoe but it is good and is popular in certain parts of the state.
Yeah, the Chicago hotdog is a known item just like the Pennsylvania cheesesteak, the Florida Cubano sandwich, the New York pastrami on rye, and the Maine lobster roll. All others are a toss-up. At least they didn't pick the Chicago deep-dish pizza as the sandwich.
thank you for recognizing nebraska as the home of the rueben. i worked a few gigs at the omaha press club, which claims to be where the sandwich was first made, and they take it dead serious. many people don't realize it but omaha, nebraska used to be a midwestern refuge the for jewish diaspora around the mid 1800's. also said, omaha, was the where the first brisket was made. i have nothing to substantiate that other than old mens' tales. it makes sense though. we had the beef here, we had the stockyards here, we had the slaughterhouses here, it seems perfectly reasonable to cure the meat before shipping it off to the coast while keeping a pocketful for local use.
I dont know if its a coney dog, but I dearly dearly miss the Hot Dog Stand (formerly an A&W in the 80's and 90's ) in Portage. Just a simple hot dog on a steamed bun with a meat sauce that I dearly love and cant find anything like it elsewhere and diced onions. Yummy

Mississippi's sandwich is a pig ear sandwich? I've lived here for most of my life and have never heard of this sandwich! I would say the shrimp po'boy would be our sandwich!
If you are in New Orleans, forget the oysters. Get a roast beef po' boy, or a shrimp po' boy. Be sure the roast beef po' boy comes with gravy and dressed.
I'm in TN - Hattie B's is really good. But you need to get to Prince's and also Moore's spicy chicken which is in Hendersonville. There are other places too, but I'd put those in my top 3 all round.

Wisconsin may be known for its cheese, but it was settled by a lot of German immigrants who brought their sausage making skills with them and there are local meat markets all over the State that make fantastic bratwurst. Nothing says summer like a brat off the grill.

The AC halibut sandwich is an uninspired, frozen piece of fish they threw in the frier. And, the fry sauce isn't even part of the sandwich. The pastrami burger from Crown Burger. There is a Utah sandwich. And their fry sauce is better.

Once more the city wins and the rest of New York is forgotten. Buffalo don't have just wings. Beef on Weck. Yes Arby's tried but it's nothing like what you find in Buffalo. Also which state is famous or known for sausage with onions and green peppers? In New Mexico I loved the Stuffed sopapillas. Now can you get those anywhere else? The reason I ask because when I was at a Star Trek convention in the 90s Scotty made it sound like it was the only place. Or maybe he meant they are the best. What about the rest of you did they mess up what is the best in your state?

Two fails for me on this list. Illinois is definitely an Italian Beef Sandwich. For New Mexico an Albuquerque Turkey is not a horrible choice, but number 1 has to be a Green Chile Cheeseburger, hands down.
Really good, but so many people have no idea what that is, sadly. Even Buffalo Wild Wings dropped the Weck from their locations, even though it is still bw3.
New Leaf Deli, Holland MI. Absolutely the best sandwiches I've had in every corner of the country and the world. And I'm not getting paid for this, I just really love their sandwiches. First time I took my buddy there, he took a bite and almost screamed "Wow!" They're that good.

Area native here. Gates is a chain that originated in Kansas City, MISSOURI. Also, Gates didn’t invent burnt ends. Those were invented at a place called Arthur Bryant’s, also in KCMO. Though these days, most places in the metro have better burnt ends than Bryant’s.

In North Carolina, the big fight is Eastern BBQ vs Western BBQ. They are made from different parts of the pig AND the BBQ sauces are completely different. One is a thicker tomato based sauce while the other is a vinegar based sauce. I do love the BBQ at Stamey's (pronounced stA-meys with a long "a" not sta-meys like the video says) in Greensboro. It uses the Western style sauce which is also called "Lexington style". Lexington, NC is the City best known for that type of BBQ.
Good choice for New Mexico, but I know a place that makes a green chili monty cristo. They also have green chili and chicken mack n cheese, and green chili ranch dressing.

Mississippi's sandwich is a pig ear sandwich? I've lived here for most of my life and have never heard of this sandwich! I would say the shrimp po'boy would be our sandwich!
I've never heard of it, either.
Maybe fried chicken sandwich ? Shrimp po boys are more Louisiana.
My family goes generations back in Mississippi, and I have never heard of a pigs ear sandwich. Gross.
If you are in New Orleans, forget the oysters. Get a roast beef po' boy, or a shrimp po' boy. Be sure the roast beef po' boy comes with gravy and dressed.
I respect these people for being brave enough to say that a hotdog is indeed a sandwich
Do not watch this video hungry. It’s absolute torture!
I'm in TN - Hattie B's is really good. But you need to get to Prince's and also Moore's spicy chicken which is in Hendersonville. There are other places too, but I'd put those in my top 3 all round.
In Connecticut, our clam rolls are delicious-especially the whole belly clams. But we are renowned for our Hot Lobster Roll-dripping in melted butter. We’re the only state in New England that has them...yum!
Came here to say this. Even the hamburger would have been a better choice than the fried clam sandwich considering the US Govt recognizes us as the birthplace of the burger (at Louis Lunch in New Haven).
Why only mention the big apple when you talk about NY?? FYI, THERE IS a New York state...with millions of people outside NYC, and with some fine food.
thats all the world cares about evidently
same is happening with Illinois. Chicago isn't the entire state but people make it sound like it is.
Who comes up with these lists ? Like where do they get their info from?
Wisconsin may be known for its cheese, but it was settled by a lot of German immigrants who brought their sausage making skills with them and there are local meat markets all over the State that make fantastic bratwurst. Nothing says summer like a brat off the grill.
That piglet was so cute, I don’t think I would ever eat a pig ear sandwich, but even just watching this video I feel incredibly guilty lol 😢 😅
Rut's Hut "Home of the Ripper" between the palisades and the Hudson River in Clifton NJ deserves a mention for thir deep fried dog fried until the natural casing rips open. Until it couldn't afford the rent anymore causing it to close, the Carnegie Deli on 8th Ave. NYC served a massive corned beef sandwich! RIP Carnegie Deli.
Although they don’t have statehood, how bout a shout out to the Half Smoked at Bens chili bowl in Washington D.C.
I’d go to every state and try every sandwich!!!
Make sure to get the correct sandwiches and not most of what this phony video showed lol
Minnesota gets the Jucy Lucy.... From Hell's Kitchen? Jesus, you have gotten the Matt's Bar / 5-8 Clun fans to unite to destroy you.
You're awesome! This is the third comment regarding the lack of enthusiasm for HK. Spot on with your choices!
Minnesota has the Juicy Lucy but Hell's Kitchen is inaccurate. The war of who created it first rages on between Matt's in Mpls and the 5/8 Bar in St. Paul. Please know this.
I was surprised that Louisiana's sandwich was the po boy and not the muffelata.
I'm from California, and I've never had a French Dip. Our state sandwich should be a carne asada taco.
@@shawnd3887 not disagreeing with you, but the "is a taco a sandwich?" question gets in the way here. Too philosophical. They were probably just playing it safe.
Arctic Circles are everywhere in Utah. I’d argue against your choice but I can’t think of a better local sandwich
The AC halibut sandwich is an uninspired, frozen piece of fish they threw in the frier. And, the fry sauce isn't even part of the sandwich.
The pastrami burger from Crown Burger. There is a Utah sandwich. And their fry sauce is better.
I’ve never had the halibut sandwich or met anyone who’ve tried it. Plus arctic circle is over rated and kinda pricey.
And you simply have NOT had a great beef dip until you've had Philippe's. It is simply the best beef dip - and YES - GET THE DOUBLE DIP - that you will ever eat, period!!!!
If I had genie wishes to try the foods from these videos without getting heart burn would be my first wish
The tri tip sandwich at Dog House Grill in Fresno, CA is pretty awesome
Coast line restaurant Alabama (Waveland).has a P.O. Boy a couple of weeks a year a crab will shed it's hard shell and grow back its shell. So for 2 to 3 weeks you can get soft shell crabs before it's start getting hard again. This restaurant fried it soft shell crabs and put it on a P.O. BOY with mayo, lettuce and tomato hot sauce . It was the best ever sandwich!! I am not a big fish or seafood lover. But this is the BEST....
.
Great video. I learned a lot. Thanks. 😊
Lived in VA for over twenty years and literally never seen "an advertisement for a ham sandwich" so no, they're not everywhere.
West Virginia here! We do love Tudor's Biscuit World !!
Fried bologna sandwiches are godly
How about a haddock sandwich for New Hampshire hardly anybody serves monte Cristo
I rarely see a monte cristo on a menus in NH but most places do have a haddock sandwich. I don’t know how they pick these!
The best Cuban is at La Tereista in Tampa. A close second is at the Columbia in Ybor City.:)
Thanx for supporting Buffalo. Tonawanda, NY checking in.
@@MrSpankee02 I'm from southwestern NY, Olean/ Allegany to be exact. We get forgotten all the time and Buffalo is a big "Melting pot" that they never talk about. And the food from our entier area mmmmm. And the wine, we have some great wine. And Cuba NY use to set the standers for cheese world wide. Now if we could only do something about those Bills
@@francisdhomer5910 I was kayaking in Olean over the summer , I love Rock City park . Peace to you, my friend.
@@francisdhomer5910 looks like the Bills are working out pretty well ::)
Two fails for me on this list. Illinois is definitely an Italian Beef Sandwich. For New Mexico an Albuquerque Turkey is not a horrible choice, but number 1 has to be a Green Chile Cheeseburger, hands down.
And for the record, IMHO the best sandwich of New York is the beef on weck!
Really good, but so many people have no idea what that is, sadly. Even Buffalo Wild Wings dropped the Weck from their locations, even though it is still bw3.
There's a place in Rhode Island that makes makes potato salad sandwiches on bun. They sell it by how much you're sandwich weighs
I came to see what sandwich was on the list for Arizona and you guys put a hotdog..
New Leaf Deli, Holland MI. Absolutely the best sandwiches I've had in every corner of the country and the world. And I'm not getting paid for this, I just really love their sandwiches. First time I took my buddy there, he took a bite and almost screamed "Wow!" They're that good.
I have no idea why they picked the fried bologna sandwich for Arkansas when we have an annual International Greek Food Festival; where local establishments like Leo's Greek Castle, Layla's, and Mama's Gyros Grill sling some of the best in central AR.
Oregon's is spot on. Pine Street Biscuits is the real deal.
That place was on Kitchen Nightmares! Hahahaha
No. Just no. Many of these are just ridiculous, and an affront to the stat’s cuisine that you link them to.
"Cosmo's Italian Sal-you-mare-ea"
How tf is some going to "hop in their car and take a journey across ALL 50 states?"
that drive to Hawaii is absolutely not worth it
When you're in Virginia, try the Battlefield Country Store's Virginia ham sandwich (on Route 3, west of Fredericksburg).
Sorry but the New Mexico choice is only half right, the top state sandwich is the Green Chili Cheeseburger.
Darn. The only one I have had is the beef dip at Phillipe's. It is in Chinatown, and you can see it from the Metro Gold Line (L Line)
O. M. G!!! 😮
That's wrong
I'm from California, and I've never had a French Dip. Our state sandwich should be a carne asada taco.
You should definitely try it!!!!
Realistically our state sandwich is the hot chicken sando at howlin rays
WRONG
Fried Snapper❤️
French dip is overrated
It's so many things to many people. But I do admit, Philippe's is pretty great. If you've never been, you should give it a try.
I noticed RUclips's new chapters feature today.
It is useful for this video
In Illinois it's the italian beef
In North Carolina, another amazing sandwich is at The Skylight inn located in Ayden -- whole hog bbq. Ayden is a small town just south of Greenville.
FYI the horseshoe was created in Springfield IL, not Chicago. Look I like Chi but come on, it’s not the only city in IL! Come to Springfield for real horseshoes!!! They are delicious!!!
I am from northern Illinois ,north of Chicago ,never heard of this Sh on a SH with frozen fries sounds like it is not a sandwich anyway maybe it belongs to missourri Italian Beef is a standard here. They got this one wrong horseshoe ? open face ?not a sandwich,I mean how can i put it in a bag and eat it at lunch,I work for a living
I've heard off this horseshit sandwich but the name really puts me off if I'm being honest. Sorry
Very fun, fun fun fun video. Very decadent American fare that should find itself on, well.. My plate!
The best loose meat sandwich in Iowa is at the Canteen in Ottumwa
I've only been to Mike's in Michigan and Katz's in Manhattan but I am about to retire with only 48 more sandwiches to go, I hope I live long enough .
Good choice for New Mexico, but I know a place that makes a green chili monty cristo. They also have green chili and chicken mack n cheese, and green chili ranch dressing.
John's roast pork is the best cheesesteak in philly and their roast pork sandwich is philly incarnate
You forgot the Cuban sandwich in Miami
No they didnt...
