  • In this video I demonstrate coloring a sketch from start to finish. I also talk about dealing with artist excuses, and what we can do about it.
    -Will Terrell

"What we have is based upon moment-to-moment choices of what we do. In each of those moments, we choose. We either take a risk and move toward what we want, or we play it safe and choose comfort. Most of the people, most of the time, choose comfort. In the end, people either have excuses or experiences; reasons or results; buts or brilliance. They either have what they wanted or they have a detailed list of all the rational reasons why not."

This video is seriously amazing. I always find myself thinking "gosh I wish I could do this, or I wish I could do that..." and when I try and it doesn't come along well I get discouraged and stop drawing. I learned a lot from this video and it makes me just want to step back and enjoy myself again like I did in the beginning. I also love how you said when you try to make something nice no one notices, but when you don't try and have fun people notice. It happens to me al the time, and I even learned from that, that when you draw because it's something you like to do it shows. When you try to hard it doesn't have the same feel or aura that the other has. Thank you so much for this video. I will keep everything in my heart and mind from now on!

Your words are so inspiring, it's just what I need to get my lazy ass off and start writing again. I may not be an artist, but everything you said applied to any aspiring person. I'm finally motivated to start working towards my goal of being a writer. No excuses. Thank you for this. Your drawing is beautiful too!

When you say a physical excuse is not having enough money, that troubles me. I don't have a lot of money but I can still buy basic supplies and try. I feel like if you can master crappy products you can do amazing things when you have the money to get better supplies and mediums. It is a lowly excuse for not doing art which I can relate to. I agree they are valid excuses, but still excuses. I've also found recently that my mistakes are helpful and not a reason to get stuck, and I feel like its a huge relief to me when it comes to art. Also super into the white highlights, so fun! Great video, thanks for sharing! You are so insightful and I am really enjoying your videos.

I just found these videos in a time in my life when things are rather rocky with my health and spirits are low. Not only were these inspiring to me as an artist, but you've rejuvenated something inside of me about being happy about my work and encouraging myself that I haven't felt since I was a child beginning art for the first time. Thanks bud, tonight was memorable :) I don't even know you and your encouragement truly touched me. If I could give you a big ole bear hug I would /manbrace

As an artist feeling down about not having the time... I finally heard what i needed to hear. No Excuses! Will, I stumbled onto your RUclips videos while watching a review about a pen I was considering on buying... I was FLOORED by you ability to be so positive. I'm usually the positive one but as of late I felt myself sinking into a depressive art slump... then I heard your uplifting words. I actually got goosebumps... thank you...for helping me reboot.

Please talk as much as you want and thank you a lot for everything

I think this is because everybody assumes artists just happen to have these magical visions and they just vomit them beautifully without any hardship, planning, rational thinking, composing, trial error etc.
When we struggle with a drawing, we get shocked, as if it's a sign that we're not a real artist, the information isn't flowing naturally. I'm very late but glad to finally understand that talent is not that important, art is just another profession where you have to work hard and think and construct.
When you face a problem in your design or artwork, it's a crime to give up, it makes problems bigger in your head and intimidates you incredibly. if you reflect and work on it just a little bit the knot will be untied, you'll level up with each problem you solve, and everything will look achievable, and they are!

I would like to thank you for this video! It is very inspirational and the way you talked about how important it is not to quit and not to be afraid helped me a lot. I was doodling something in my sketchbook when you started to talk about "what you focus on is going to expand" and about excuses. I immediately stopped and had to write it down. I even wrote NO EXCUSES! at the hard cover of my sketch book because I always have problems with that - especially with comparing myself with experienced artists. So I want to thank you for this because you talk about things that I always struggle with and that are important to overcome. It helped me a lot!

In the middle of this video, i was torn between "should i drop a comment and thank you for the inspiration" or "should I just move on, he might not be able to read it anyway". At the back of my mind, I was doing a quick run down of why I shouldn't put down a comment. (readers might find it funny or boring or too sappy or... yes, the list goes on) Ironic😂 I realized. Here you are talking about making risks and I, on the hand, is on the verge of staying in my comfort zone. So this little argument with myself ended with the good side winning😁 I realized I have gained so much from what you shared, and I believe, I owe you to let you know that you have changed me to 'always' strive to become the kind if person I want to be. You've made one guy's life a whole lot meaningful with those words you shared. That meant, one less procrastinating, self-doubting person in this world today. 😇 I understand that my brain hasn't registered everything you've shared in this video, so, I'll be playing it back every now and then (esp. when I feel like I'm losing track or something😅) I checked you have uploaded this video last 2012. I wonder what my life would be like if I have encountered this video 4 years ago. But, no regrets now. Like what you said: there are no mistakes in life. Only lessons.
You genuinely are an inspiration😊 Thank you again.

Will, these videos always seem to hit so close to home. As silly as it sounds, knowing that professional artists and artists that have more experience than I do have the same problems that I face does so much to push me to work every day at becoming better. You probably hear this often on these comments, I just really wanted to thank you for being able to share all of this without being condescending or intimidating, which I feel a lot of other art teachers can be. Thanks for everything, and please keep doing what you're doing. It really makes more of a difference in the lives of people than I imagine you could expect.

You are so right Will. I just started watching these videos from the start and this video in particular stuck out to me, as a writer and an artist your words struck me stupid with how accurate you spoke. Whenever I try to force myself to write/draw it turns out worse than usual but when I'm happy or in a place I'm comfortable and happy in, it comes to naturally. I always make excuses not to do what I need to but I can't do that anymore.. Thank you Will for your words of wisdom and experience.

For me it is a fear of not reaching my expectations/goals since I am 24 years old and I feel like I am letting down my parents/friend down. I know that inside me that I can be something great but it is that irrational fear of not being good enough or not measuring up to my expectations, but I still sketch almost every day on the fundamentals while also doing my thing as well. I am confronting those fears. That is what people need to do is accept the fear(s) and confront them, not run away from them. It takes time and courage to do anything that you are passionate about. That is all someone can do is to keep plugging away, and if you fail at the end it is better than succeeding at something that is soul sucking like working at a cubicle filing papers for the Masterson account :). Besides if you are doing something that you love, you really are not failing. The true failure is when you give up and letting those fears/incidents in life win you over. Be brave.

I am at a place in life where i am ready to step forward and face my fears of not being or feeling good enough, to, going out and doing what i should have done years ago, getting my sketch book and drawing everyday. Even if its 10 mins. I may never feel good enough as there will always be someone better. But I will have the confidence that I am improving and getting better each day. I'm doing this for me! And like you said. This is not going to be where I am in 5 + years. This is a process of becoming a better person and a better artist! Thank you again for sharing,

Thank you so, so, so much for making this! Your art is amazing and your thoughts are exactly what I needed to hear!! I struggle with pretty deep depression and anxiety and I often look back at the excuses I made and feel like I'm just letting my mental issues become my life instead of learning to work with them. I know coping skills and I know I have coping skills, it's just a matter of stopping and forgiving yourself for that that voice that comes and tells you you were such a wretch for starting and giving up or just not trying altogether. So many voices in your head...and you're so right: we can't give in to that voice because there are a million critics out there ready to tell us how much we suck. Why are we letting our own voice be anything but constructive criticisms? We need to stop comparing and start enjoying ourselves. Stop anticipating and start participating in what we love and plan on and think about all the time. Your concepts aren't entirely new to me...but hearing you say them the way you do all while making something you clearly enjoyed yourself doing made me filled with joy. I'm going to forgive myself and start over new every day. I'm going to go today and create with joy.

I always find watching and listening to other artists as they work to be very motivating and inspiring, but your videos have really made me want to make changes in my own life to better myself as an artist. This video in particular has turned my thinking around.
I haven't drawn much in the past year and a half since I started my full time job. I've barely even been doodling. When I looked back recently at the rare drawings I did manage to force out, I realized hadn't improved even the tiniest bit since I graduated from university. I felt so defeated I nearly cried. The drawings looked so bad it made me want to stop trying altogether. However, the point you made here about not beating yourself up over mistakes and getting past all the excuses you make to not draw, as well as things you've said in other videos about drawing constantly and filling up as many sketchbooks as you can with bad drawings so you can start to make good drawings have really refreshed my mental state and made me want to get back to working on bettering myself as an artist. After work today I think I'm going to go pick up a sketchbook to fill.
    Thank you!

This really went under my skin. I've been telling everyone for 2 years now how I'm going to make a game with traditional animation, and everyone has been really supportive and I've gotten a great deal of feeling selfworth from that. You know, feeling that "I've got big stuff going on." But to be honest, I have never done anything like that project, and somewhere along the line I grew too scared to even start and try, in fear of failing. - Not meeting my own nor anyone else's expectations. You Sir have inspired me to stop drifting, and start to sail, because how else am I ever gonna reach the port? ;)

I am doing it not for a career, I do it because I have the need to create. I never even had a thought on it, I just love to create things. After watching this video I realized that I am my worst critic. Very kind words. I've been watching some of your videos over the last few days and relate a great deal to your journey as an artist. Only if I've just been coming out of the shadows this last year. TY and Big Huggs!

That's the absolute truth. I know for a fact I haven't been drawing much just because I've become too critical of myself to enjoy doing it, so I just make up excuses not to do it. But actually stop hating myself and everything I do is something I haven't managed yet. I can't sketch in front of people because I'm way too ashamed of my own work.

1/2 Thank you so much for this video and others like it! Im a young artist and ive got so much in my head that i always want to get on paper but all i ever end up doing is procrastinating and hoping that somehow it will all get done. Thank you for this video! A friend shared it with me and I'm so glad he did!! Not only did I love watching you work from start to finish (that can and has helped immensely!)You also really hit the nail on the head with 'excuses' and sometimes I just really need to hear that I'm not the only one suffering these artistic problems! So thank you for the wise and helpful words but also helping me learn some colouring techniques for which I am breaking myself (slowly haha) into!! Keep up the great art and helpful words :)

Thank you so much for making these inspiring videos and sharing your insights. I literally wrote "No Excuses" on my wall, just before you mentioned it. Have been having this feeling that I'm not productive enough for a couple of days and your videos have helped me. (and there is just so much soul and charisma in your artworks). Thank you & wish you all the best on your artistic journey. :)

It's talks like this that really help my mood. I can really sympathize with the beating yourself up, therefore not accomplishing things.
I've been having trouble trying to draw things to sell. Every time I try I'm always super tense because it's "serious business," and my drawing becomes really stiff and terrible, which I then proceed to beat myself up about because I know I can do better.

I always thought Art should be a hobby. I am very realistic and knew that I am not good enough to make it my sole career and financial bearer. However it has always been that one thing in my life that no one else can understand and its for ME. So at 21 I have decided to say F*** it. I will be applying too all the schools and internships I can that involve art because I'd rather have to struggle in my life for a passion and be content with my field than work my ass off for a job and life I'm not comfortable in. I'd say wish me luck but I want the cards to fall where they might and let life draw itself one line and step at a time. :) Thank you for this video
