I first saw this film in middle school and it really inspired me as a cartoonist. The shot of John Kascht sitting in on a meeting with Kevin Nealon and Conan O'Brien is so cool to me now because this film also introduced me to Conan - the best to ever do it.
Can't believe I watched this whole thing, but now... I think I could listen to John Kascht speak at length about any of his subjects. But especially one as interesting as Conan. Just great!
I had the pleasure of meeting John last month. I was inducted into National Art Honor Society where he was the guest speaker. After that, I emailed him and he responded two days ago. He invited me and my friend to his studio to see our artwork and to have dinner! He's such an awesome guy. I've been so giddy since he replied! I can't wait!!
I love how this was primarily a video about outlook and the thought process, rather than about technique itself. It's about seeing. Just fantastic, and inspiring, even if you're doing a completely different style!
wonderful! I was skipping the video towards the end. Just to see the cartoon...but after the analysis, and the story telling...I had to watch the whole video! Wonderful artist.
Im happy to see talented artist show their way of working. This video really shows a lot of the whole working process and specificly points out how long time everything takes to make. Thx John for sharing this with us!
Wow, the precision of the physical description would almost seem insulting in any other context - but this is AMAZING... and "cone bone" is great! Love this video.
WOW!! Thank you John! You have an amazing talent, you have combined the two skills that I wish I had, the ability to draw like you and the natural ability to be funny and make others laugh like Conan does
Wow, first time watching your video. Amazing how well you dive into not only their features, but almost the meaning of every detail of the portrait. Amazing work.
WOW! Amazing, i feel like i just took a lecture on Conan, i loved this video, i feel like i learned so much about him, iv always loved Conan iv been watching him since i was a kid, hes the only talk show host i watched, i never cared about guests i just love the guy and hes jokes. LONG LIVE COCO!!!!
Wow. Just........WOW ! Amazing artist. I just started painting in watercolor and I did a painting today and had a huge mess. the painting turned out great, but you make it looks so easy and mess free ! Years of experience I guess. Great work and I loved the mini documentary ! Thanks !
Absolutely amazing. I had no idea that caricaturists put in so much effort and research when drawing their subjects (or maybe Kascht is one of the only ones.)
W0W! I was blown away by this fabulous documentary, John! So engrossing on so many levels! One needn't be a face hustler to enjoy it (although I am one) The writing was so great... Did you construct the "script"? Edit it, too? I fluctuate between scribbling faces and manipulating footage that I was hypnotized from the 1st frame. More, Sir! Sammy the K
This was great, i never appreciated this kind of caricature since they're not something i particularly like, but i never stopped to think how much was behind them.
Don't worry too much about the types or brands, just produce as much as possible. Draw EVERYDAY. Whether you feel like it or not, even if you think it's garbage when you're done, keep it, and keep drawing. Your technique coming from practice is going to be 10,000x more important than the tools you use. =)
19:29 I think this may be why I've always grouped Conan and Colbert together in my mind, in a way not unlike milk and cookies, or peanutbutter and jelly.
WOW fantastic, love every thing about it. Personal i liked the picture at 16:09 better then the final one. But hey everyone was their own opinion right, which helps make art fresh each time. well maybe not Comedyman112

Ha! I like how he starts sculpting and says, I haven't touched that for 20 years and then proceeds to sculpt a masterpiece... -___-
Not only is this video funny and informative, but I never once got bored. I can garauntee you that I will watch this again and again!
This is brilliant. What a thoughtful process
I will die mad that this is not simply one episode in a dozen seasons of this.

This is phenomenal.
There is no more worthy a subject for an artist and a docu like this than Conan O'Brien. This is incredibly done.
That's a really amzaing likeness of Conan!!!
wonderful! I was skipping the video towards the end. Just to see the cartoon...but after the analysis, and the story telling...I had to watch the whole video! Wonderful artist.
Very well done, and brilliant to boot. You have immense talent, and honorable respect for your subjects. Thank you for this.
Great reasoning behind creating a caricature.
Truly inspiring.
I loved the black and white portrait of Conan better than the final one. Very nice to see the process in depth though.

Absolutely amazing. I had no idea that caricaturists put in so much effort and research when drawing their subjects (or maybe Kascht is one of the only ones.)

The link I clicked for this video only showed the hair in the final drawing, and I still immediately knew who the caricature was.
Amazing!
A great artist !!
Curious-- what watercolors and watercolor paper do you work with? Or is it illustration board?
Thanks for a great video!
increible !
Really impressive. I feel lazy with my own caricatures now... I never even considered making a sculpture.
This is like The Wizard of Oz.
That man's a fucking talented genius.
This video is so amazing and important, cause i wish to draw professional caricatures. Could someone plesa tell me wich pencils that gentleman uses?
"You can see which features have been prominent..."
DAT HURR.
i gotta try my hand at sculpting and caricatures...always have....
