I worked as his interpreter a few years back when he was staying in The Netherlands as an artist in residence, really nice guy, extremely passionate about art and history. I remember how his eyes lit up when I told him you could get soy sauce in Dutch supermarkets too XD
I think he is brilliant! I love his art. He is so ambitious, experimental, hard working, open minded and a true citizen of the world! He has a lot of my respect.
Quite a blessing to have parents whom support ones life purpose, so often I hear of people who were not supported to take a career in the arts and many people in our society don't always recognise the significance of the arts. However art references humanity's evolution especially in the historical context. To a point... we're able to decipher the psychologies of the people past and present, certainly his work plays a significant role in Singapore's history, well in my opinion it does. It's good to question political systems, all systems to that point, interesting! Sun Xuns work is incredibly beautiful 😊
When the crooks at Bloomberg promote it, you can be sure it is half-arsed work by a moderately talented man on ego-trip, chosen to be the cultural weapon against anything resembling tradition in China.
I noticed that too and that made me smile 😃 sometimes parents rob us of our talents and dreams and force us to get jobs so to see that he agreed on him being an artist was beautiful
I love how artists may influence each other across all media: for instance, Sun Xun created an island on the back of a whale and truth was the significance. In music, Harry Styles created a whale shaped island where he learnt the truth of himself and his lover ( Eroda). He featured it in a music video called Adore You ( Eroda = Adore). I wonder if Harry Styles was influenced by Sun Xun? How exquisite that would be!
i rarely watch any video all go through, but his attitude caught my eyes and i was just keep watching... His thought inspired me a lot that he is just an artist without any label where he from. great, wonderful!
I love these videos, but the subtitles bother me. They're changed pretty often from what he's actually saying and it sometimes changes the meaning. I understand that his English isn't perfect, and adding occasional small grammatical changes for clarity would be ok, but there's no reason to change "past news" to "old newspapers", "changed" to "influenced", or "art was not the real end" to "art was not the end goal", other than the transcriptionist just thinks they know a better way to say what he's saying.
Have you considered doing a subtitled version? I would value it highly. Once upon a time II watched the French "Beauty and the Beast" and with my infinitesimal grasp of French noticed it very poor. .
I appreciate what they've done. Sometimes he's not using the right words to express what he's trying to say and the transcriptionist did a great job to bridge that communication. Think of it from a deaf person's perspective. Transcribing what he said literally can kill that communication.
A bi-lingual person often literally translates words and thoughts from his native language. So, given the context, the choice of his English words might not be the correct one and will leave the viewers confused. I think they had a Chinese interpreter with them who clarified some of the words which would help the translation in the end. Maybe, for e.g. he really meant to say old newspapers and not past news. If you knew Chinese people who are not fluent at English, their choice of English words is very similar to his.
He's a true artist. True artist represent himself (and its more important), and his culture, in one time. You can dislike it, but you can't say, that it is not art. Basicly, you never can. So just stop being ignorant.
This is very inspiring. His point of view is interested and truly express what it means to be an artist. We shouldn't limit our thoughts or medium we use to create.
This man is like a powerful stream gushing out creativity very naturally. It was wonderful to see an artist possessing strong ties with his family and the world. The remarks made by Sun Xun towards the end of this clip were some good lines to ruminate on. Absolutely loved this.
Glad that Xun’s dad didn’t stop him from pursuing the true art in his heart. But his dad was wrong about one thing, being an artist cannot avoid talking about politics, especially in a country like China where histories were recreated. I like Xun’s idea to be a world citizen and only to represent himself rather than his country. Please keep being independent and delivering your own thoughts (uncensored).
Super talent young artist. It's important to express our own interpretation of the world we see, we know and we don't see and we don't know very well, and then we hear out, we learn and we adjust, keep on expressing. That's important for an artist.
Amazing ideas through the artist, but would have appreciated less consumer overtones on what Xun’s work means. I would rather hear more on the artist’s concept than what a regular (just educated) individual has to say.
How come there's people critiqueing his art but not elaborating on it? It sounds like cowards who don't know what he's doing, see something political (art always had to be international right?), and are jealous of the attention. Be honest with yourself. You haven't given him a chance. This is exactly what he's talking about. You accept one type of art and opinion, but not his. All art is just one part of the truth, as shown from one person's perspective. It's not his fault his subject matter draws more attention.
I like seeing the artists and their art. The commentators, not so much. All I hear/see when they're onscreen is "Blah blah blah I'm pretentious and self-important blah blah blah."
Artists are international and global citizen, but first they are all national to begin with, that is the cultural belonging, there is no problem loving your own country and being a global citizen
This guy Sun Xun is clearly ten times smarter than all these, a les around him and its kinda boss, most of the interviewerees dont even speak in a way that can be comprehended, and clearly are just grifting. More power to this guy though, seems cool, but not world shattering as they describe of course.
I don't know why, but for some strange reason, the way Sun Xun talks - his mannerisms, his beliefs, his individuality - reminds me of Kanye West in interviews (minus the acting out bits).
He has the spirit of the dragon. Aggressive with purpose. Not bounded by earth or country. The dragon understands we can rise above nature and the land, and let out our fire. But must return to earth and what is inside. Long live the spirit of the dragon.
-an artist is just an artist- prob is most folks don't know nor acknowledge that...and i add: everybody is a artist, even tho' they don't know it for a fact.

Christina L aw that's so lovely!
wauw ik ben jaloers! lijkt me erg gaaf om met hem te werken
I bet he'd love to know it's a commodity here in the states!
weergaloos!
You can get soy sauce pretty much anywhere in the developed world.
'Questioning existing systems, this is my art.' Brilliant!
I think he is brilliant! I love his art. He is so ambitious, experimental, hard working, open minded and a true citizen of the world! He has a lot of my respect.

Sun Xun is a collector.he collects different things...and I am happy, just happy for him
I don't know why they stopped making teh brilliant idea series, truly amazing overviews of artists all around the world, wish there'd be more of these
“The Piece of work is no a art, The film is not art, Art is about deeper spirit”
Thank
It’s all about people and feeling. I guess.
Real artists are global citizens. True.
" just a tool "
"I don't know what it is (his art) but I am happy". Inspiring.
Really, really impressed with this guy. I find his art and personality very compelling.
Sun Xun hands down one of the best artists of his generation and future generations
When the crooks at Bloomberg promote it, you can be sure it is half-arsed work by a moderately talented man on ego-trip, chosen to be the cultural weapon against anything resembling tradition in China.
his father is a very god man to recognize Sun Xun's talents and support the art dream
I noticed that too and that made me smile 😃 sometimes parents rob us of our talents and dreams and force us to get jobs so to see that he agreed on him being an artist was beautiful
What an amazing man! This is what I call a true artist.
Asun Montero if I may ask what do you call the opposite?
I love how artists may influence each other across all media: for instance, Sun Xun created an island on the back of a whale and truth was the significance. That's so cool! I didn't realize this
Enlightening, for sure. Sun Xun is a true artist.
"politics make people crazy" YES!
His work is very political anyway
smith SMITH Everything is about politics...
But all his art embraces culture and his preference is obvious.
@@Namaster88 Not everything. That's ethnocentrism talking.
@@michellepernula872 LOL. Politics is not ethnocentric. Politics is universal.
I m an artist and agree with him in all. We're a nature tool for the future, people of the world, of the past, present and future. 💓
i rarely watch any video all go through, but his attitude caught my eyes and i was just keep watching... His thought inspired me a lot that he is just an artist without any label where he from. great, wonderful!
Finally someone that inspires me to progress...and explore my creativity.

@Vongdarakia I understand what you're saying and I agree, but I think to use the word "kill" is a bit much.

This is my first time hearing of Sun Xun, what an amazing artist and also an inspirational person. Love his work.
"I work for my spirit" That is an amazing idea... I never thought in those terms before.
He's a true artist. True artist represent himself (and its more important), and his culture, in one time. You can dislike it, but you can't say, that it is not art. Basicly, you never can. So just stop being ignorant.

True artist. True passion. True inspiration for me!
Thank you for your father's support and your passion in arts
Incredibly inspiring. I'm surprised I've never heard of him before. This is what I need to motivate me to continue art
Very inspiring! Artist work not for present , Artist work for the future. Sun Xun 🙏😇❤️
Such a positive & ambitious nation.

i don't like art when you need someone to explain you how beautiful the work actually is...
His art is really refreshing to see. Inspiring.

absolutely magnificent artworks! He is so modern with a little dash of nostalgia from the past.
Spellbinding and brilliant. What a master of his craft.
How come there's people

It's impressive how much they're able to talk about China without talking about China.
His work is mesmerizing!

His work is so powerful!!!
I love his art and passion.
Excellent video! Fascinating!
Bruh this dude is an absolute madman.
I like seeing the artists and their art. The commentators, not so much. All I hear/see when they're onscreen is "Blah blah blah I'm pretentious and self-important blah blah blah."
I love the art. The black/white imagery is breathtaking and executed very well but the concepts leave me baffled.
Amazingly inspirational. Best artist I've seen in a while imo
I know all art styles except his art style it's very unique his art style was like an ink painting
Artists are international and global citizen, but first they are all national to begin with, that is the cultural belonging, there is no problem loving your own country and being a global citizen
Such a pleasure, thank you.

powerful and amazing work!!!
I'm surprised that he would be able to publish such art. It's rare that we see any quality art come out of China. Thanks for posting this.
