  • Meet German artist Friedrich Kunath in this personal interview about his work, life and overcoming numerous obstacles along the way.
    “This sense of homelessness permeates my complete oeuvre-this aspect of the ambiguity of our existence. To paint or to make these works is to feel at home. To feel found, to feel understood.”
    Kunath grew up in former East Germany, finding out that many of his childhood memories had not been what they seemed at the time. Later a breakdown provoked by alcohol and drugs marked the beginning of his successful painting career, along with an ever-present interest in music.
    “When you are in the presence of something great, you feel understood. And your feel that you are not alone. It’s easy as this.”
    Friedrich Kunath (b.1974) is a German artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. He studied at the Braunschweig University of Arts. Kunath’s journey from Germany to Los Angeles is at the core of his works - incorporating German Romanticism and western popular culture with lyrical references, cartoon imagery, as well as still life, nature photography, and commercial illustrations.
    Friedrich Kunath was interviewed by Kasper Bech Dyg at the Avlskarl Gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark, in September 2021.

    Ich bin zutiefst beeindruckt. Von deiner Geschichte, deinen Bildern, deiner Ausstrahlung. Wie man das spüren kann. All das unter ...der Haut, auf der Leinwand, in den Augen. Völlig identisch. Deshalb wahrscheinlich groß. Diese Zerbrechlichkeit im Felsen, die Dunkelheit in mitten der Sonne . Verzeih, wenn ich es nicht anders in Worte zu fassen weiß. Auf jedenfall, eine sehr schöne Doku über einen bemerkenswerten Typen. Und einen tollen Maler

    I really like this smart combination of painting and words. These words could just be the title of the artwork. But the words are written in the painting, they are part of the painting. This is brave and makes me think about even more.

    one of the worst contemporary work, empty, badly painted (on purpose i guess), seems like a street artist using POP mixed with Irony to obtain something bland and aimless, he's got nothing to say about hos medium, painting or art history it's annoying because the man seems really nice and clever, happy for his success tho

    • @perditachavez
      @perditachavez Год назад +1

      @@amososemwengie IMO it would be a work where i can see/feel/think the maturation of ideas put there by the artist - the way he avoid clichés about subject, forms etc. A complete painting is an object who could be complex in its simplicity or simple in its complexity. a work trying to go beyond the simple egotistical desire of the painter, in other words it's like reading a great book who make you think beyond what you read - it's not a clear answer to your really great question, but it's all i got on this rainy sunday :)
