You are the ONLY artist I've found on RUclips who talks about and helps develop the mind of the artist. To me that's so much better than knowing the proper body proportions or how to draw a hand holding a glass of wine or whatever specific art lessons there are on this site. I hope that didn't come across as negative towards other channels because that technical stuff matters very much. Just not as much as this. I'm sharing this with some really talented artists so they can also to hear your words, sensei.

On learning from people that are not as good as you... my best friend who I've known for 10 years now did not start out great at drawing. He was horrible compared to me for years while we went to school together. But I never treated him as lesser than me, I liked to listen to his ideas and watch him attempt to illustrate them in their own way. He doesn't think the way I think, and when he talks about art there is something new every time. Now after a couple figure drawing classes in college he's fantastic at drawing. Such an improvement! And now I respect him as an artist.

10:40 Heart touching, man. I remember I made a unicorn for a little girl in the metro, as she was holding some comic book. Her expresion was a true joy, and his father thanked it to me sincerely.
Maybe I regret I have not the courage to asume I can make something like you did. But I support it: As an artist you can make the world brighter.
    Thanks for sharing.

I used to draw a lot as a kid and eventually gave up. A few years ago I got back into drawing while doodling with my daughter. I get frustrated with my work but artists like you, Jazza and others are a big help. I just learned about you at the beginning of this week and have watched so many of your videos since. Your ideas on how to get better at art is a godsend but your advice on life is truly a blessing to me right now. I’ve been really depressed and having a hard time and never thought I’d get this much help from listening to an artist. You are so much more; thank you for your videos and keep doing what you do!

Your story totally moved me and earned a subscriber, nearly 3 years later!!! Will, you are right about these journeys, one took me to a fundraiser for disabled kids who's family couldn't afford them. This organization would get the money together to assemble these various mobile devices that insurance failed to cover. The father was asked to draw a caricature of a girl as Wonder Woman. Her mother told her story of how the organization helped her daughter who would never be able to talk or walk in her life. She had a series of touch and go dances with death and survived. I didn't know what to do. The other kids could interact, but she couldn't....And then she smiled. It may have been purely out of reflex, but I took it and ran with it. It was one of the most moving caricatures I had ever done for a family!

I've recently been struggling with how art, at least on the surface, can seem like a shallow endeavor being useful only for entertainment. Where as fields like science, math, and engineering have tangible and progressive results; And thats been bumming me out. But your story about drawing the kid as spiderman is so uplifting, and shows how art, when used less selfishly, can drastically change peoples lives for the better, including the artist!

The story about the kid and the cancer ward and how it opened your eyes to what you can give to the world was an amazing and inspiring story, especially since you tell it so well. I'm 28, and I'm an aspiring artist; I've done a bit of drawing here and there for years but nothing serious. Now, I've made the choice that I want to do illustrations for a living, but it gets depressing not to mention embarrassing, as old as I am. But you remind me that it's not about me, it's what I can give. Thanks.

For me the largest roadblock has never been learning the technical side of art, but the largest roadblock has, and still is, my own mental state, which is very poor when it comes to my view of myself. So this video is very inspirational to me. I can recognize myself in your description of being alone, because that's how I feel artistically. I feel like I have such a hard time connecting with other artists, and I think it must be me, just gotta figure out what I can do.
Thank you for this wonderful video, and all of the others.
