  • Following up my recent video on the Hulk / Bruce Banner relationship in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, this analysis dives into the Hulk's character and relationship with the rest of EMH's Avengers, focusing specifically on Hawkeye, Captain America, Thor, and the Wasp. My breakdown concludes with a reading of the Hulk's story in EMH as something approaching a humanist parable on the value of surrounding oneself with good people!

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes was a Marvel animated series developed by Christopher Yost and Joshua Fine, and saw Marvel's premiere superteam face off against a host of villains, such as Kang, Ultron, the Masters of Evil, Doom, the Kree, the Skrulls, Galactus, and many more.

I was actually kinda liking where Hulk was going in Ragnarok. I feel like they should’ve kept him in that sort of equilibrium with Banner.

@@Gojirawars03 It was a bit disappointing we had to wait till Ragnarok for a Hulk that talks in basic sentences when that's something he should have been capable of from the start (but Whedon, while I think he generally handled Bruce and Hulk well, did unfortunately make Hulk too ape like in his behavior) but at the time I was happy just to finally see it. I lost my mind at the *trailer* with the first look at the "like smoldering fire" conversation he and Thor have. It was soooo good.
But yep, then the Russos just took that away and skipped a ton of character development and replaced that Hulk as soon as they could.

Captain America had Hulk's back from the start, when AIM and Hydra were having a turf war over the Cosmic Cube. Hulk thought Cap saw him as a monster, but he says in his day Hulk would be called a hero. He doesn't order him around, he just encourages him to be the hero that he knows he is. It's one of the reasons why Captain America's word holds a lot of weight in Marvel, before Secret Empire but let's ignore that. When Steve Rogers said something, everyone and their mom listens intently.

While i know im the minority in this case, i actually liked the "Hydra Cap" storyline or at least the idea. It certainly should have been handled better, with a lot more nudge nudge wink wink tap nose on the behalf of the writes both in story and during interviews. But the idea has merit, a Captain America who was a traitor and worked for hydra, the one guy everybody could count on and trusted implicitly turned out to be the baddest bad guy there was. Though EMH handled the traitor Cap story infinitely better.

This could be interpreted as saying that Captain America is a hero not because that's just who he is, but because he puts in the work to make sure he's not a villain (though again, the comics didn't really focus on that aspect). All in all, great ideas, flawed execution, still a decent story.

I always felt that the Avengers were standing for the illuminati here with their treatment of Bruce and Hulk during this season. They viewed hulk as dangerous and where perfectly fine with him being sent away so where and having him be someone else’s problem. However, Cap and Hawkeye never thought of him as a monster and always vouched for him. Their continued trust in him helped to in turn, bring out his heroism more directly. The team’s initial adoration of the red hulk was clearly meant to mimic how readers went nuts when he was first introduced in the comics. He was EVERYWHERE, appearing in books he had absolutely no business in, like spider-girl, the avengers, venom, fantastic four, etc. He was treated like the best thing since sliced bread, and at the time, in terms of characterization, there was nothing he could do that Green Scar Hulk personality couldn’t. Bruce and the Hulk had to be de-powered and regressed to the savage Hulk personality in order to build Red Hulk up

Seeing the characters interact with the Hulk is definitely interesting because it ironically shows the more human side of the heroes, especially in moments where he is called a monster. When I started reading Avengers comics after finishing the series, I realized the obvious: The Avengers did not accept the Hulk as in the series, in number 1 itself everything is very different from the series, which really deserves to be analyzed. As much as they share a common villain, the movie and the comic are very different products, with the movie being more comparable to the Ultimates, but the Breakout episodes and Avengers # 1 were something that blew my mind

It was great to see the Hulk form genuine friendships with Cap, Wasp and Hawkeye. All too often in the comics, the avengers only view Hulk as weapon; a canon to be aimed at the threat of the storyline. Never as a teammate. I think it would be interesting if they had the original lineup of the defenders appear on the show, and use that to examine the contrast of Hulk’s relationship between the two teams. It could provide some interesting interactions and character studies, especially the close friendship that Dr. Strange has with both Hulk AND Bruce. The avengers on this show don’t get a chance to interact with Bruce much at all( which makes sense for the era of storylines they’re adapting, but still odd considering the “ science bromance “ of Tony and Bruce in the MCU). Definitely make that third Hulk video though. I always love hearing Hulk’s dichotomy being analyzed.

Captain America, Wasp and Hulk all receive their powers through radiation or genetic mutation. Only difference is that Steve and Janey choose to be altered Bruce had no choice. His transformation into the Hulk was never his choice. It was forced upon him when he was caught in the gamma bomb explosion and usually loses control whenever he is forced to changes due to extreme anger or stress.
It would have been nice to see interactions between Vision and Hulk. Like Hulk Vision was viewed as a villain (I know he was but that's beside the point). Vision saved the team from Ultron and was accepted into their ranks almost immediately. Whereas Hulk was still in jail by the time this occurred. Vision was viewed as a monster but was accepted with open arms after he proved himself. Hulk proved himself but in the end was arrested and his friends (with exception of Steve and Janet) didn't do anything to help (due to the machinations of Skrull Captain America).

This show was and still is five times better than the entire MCU, and I think it handled the Hulk perfectly, but I also thought it was a perfect portrayal of his archenemy, General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. It really showed off how ruthless and downright evil Ross is, seeing the way that he was willing to endanger whoever else was fighting the Hulk and any bystanders just to get him. It also showed his true motivation for catching the Hulk as wanting to take his power for himself seeing his portrayal as the Red Hulk. As the Red Hulk, Ross openly called the Hulk a chump for using his powers to protect people rather than prove his might, showing that Ross isn't worthy of said powers as he'd rather be feared than loved, unlike the Hulk. Their portrayal also makes me believe that the Hulk's origins are similar to the original comics, but Ross corrupted Banner's gamma research to create a bomb, while Banner's altruism is still what made him into the Hulk when he saved Rick Jones from the gamma bomb. My only criticism regarding the Hulk's inclusion in this show is that it didn't include much of the Hulk's supporting cast other than his enemies and fellow Avengers; I would've loved to see Rick Jones aiding the Avengers as he did in the comics and Betty Ross trying to fix her relationship with Bruce.
