I went to college with him in Maryland. A couple of yr back at homecoming I remember him telling me that he’s opening a restaurant. Proud of bruh. I got some African spice for you.
I knew he looked familiar!! He went to Bowie state?
Rugy Joy Heey
RJ your ain’t replied to my text, why?
@@a.sbundu8380 😂
Yes please Go for it because out here in the Bay Area there was a black and African soul food restaurant and the combination of both of the cultures was so good idk what happened to the lady’s but one was born in the south of America and the other lady was from Nigeria Africa I haven’t heard of them since before the pandemic
"If you think you put a little to much, just put a little more" I like this man
Jodie isNerd I read this when he said that. Wired
That sounds like my grandma when she was teaching me how to make desserts.
Basically the same mantra but with spinach since it cooks down to nothing
Im glad u like him because I dont. He's changed the whole dynamics of potato salad. Nowhere does it permit "Miracle Whip" or "Dijon Mustard" or not peeling ur potatoes. If he is making slop for hogs, this is okay, but since it isnt, this is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!
Jodie isNerd The first time I made potato salad, it was extremely soupy
I just did it. This recipe is beyond fantastic 😋😋 My husband said he doesn't need to go to restaurants anymore because I'm cooking restaurant quality at home 😄
shoutouts to you!!
Great.
You fail for that😂
As a white guy from nothern Germany I have to say that your recipe is quite close to "our" version of potatoe salad. We usually don't use celery (as far as I know, at least), but I can imagine it should fit in very well.....actually, every region here has it's own, slightly different way to prepare it, but RAISINS are definitely a war crime :-D Thanks for sharing and many greetings from Hamburg ;-)
I thought potato salad originated in Germany, so it makes sense..
yes, i was about to say in my comment, he's making German potato salad, not traditional southern soul food way.
please bring him back, this video is hilarious
Yes he is 😂
he had me at the "mashed potato" part😭💀
agreed ❤️
You must know him
Johnny 24 no, I just have a sense of humour
"Worst case scenario, you'll need to put hot sauce in it 'cause you know, most people got it in their bag" I'm dying... that's TRUE.
That's so true. 😅
😂
Exactly 😂😊 I am so relieved to see this comment
yess or theres like 20 bottles on the table
I got my best friend a little hot sauce squeeze bottle with a carabiner for Christmas so she could attach it to her bag or belt. Can't leave the hot sauce at home!
I made it today and seen EVERYTHING I was doing WRONG 🤦🏾♀️THANKS and da WHOLE FAMILY, FINALLY ate MY POTATO SALAD(NOT MUSH SALAD). I also realized that if I mix my mayo SEPARATELY I can't OVER SEASON certain spots. It was ALL AROUND A GOOD VIDEO and a PERFECT LESSON💯
I've made this recipe several times since watching this video. It is bar far the best potato salad I have ever made!
No sir
I agree!
"This ain't for you, it's for everybody" THANK YOU, can't tell you how much a lot of people CAN'T eat at bbqs, potlucks or parties because bacon or pork is on almost everything
I get sick of asking the cooks if their recipe has pork in it. Then the cooks that say they have no idea...like wtf. I'll usually only eat what I brought and maybe 1 or 2 other things to be on the safe side.
@@MizGator right?? I usually just eat dessert or come full, I never come hungry
MizGator yep. I make and bring what im going to eat. Thats it. Cause pork is incorporated into nearly EVERYTHING nowadays🤷🏽♀️
I can’t eat pork and canola oil for medical reasons and I’m so tired when I have to alert family members who are organizing a cookout to make sure that food containing pork and canola oil to be separate from the other stuff.
If you can't tell if there's pork in it then those it really matter?
Tip for folks who don't have a sweet onion: if you soak a "regular" onion (red, white, yellow, etc) in cold water for 5 minutes after slicing that'll remove some of the enzymes that cause tanginess/bad breath.
false
@@macmac19 cold water breaks down some of the sulfur compounds that give onions their pungency and "bite", which also contribute to that lingering onion flavor. But sure, your "false" with no substantiating information is very helpful. 🙃
thxs
Soaking in lemon juice is fantastic for calming down a feisty onion.
I don’t mind a onion with a kick i am from the Deep South love onion
I just watched one of your recipes for the first time. Jermaine, you are my new favorite cook to watch. Thank you for being so real and hilarious!
THANKYOU I made this for my grandparents and parents aunt and uncles ! I stuck with u and everyone LOVED it and so did I ! It had so much flavour and for such a big family it was perfect! And I completely recommend u and hope everyone else had a delicious meal just like mine!
My grandma would cook one extra egg and put slices on top in a circle and then paprika for days.
That's what my mom did, too. And mustard was always standard French's yellow -- and lots of it.
Yes! We all still do it.
@Anne Marie yep that's how I do it too but I also like to add dried parsley flakes and crush black pepper along with the paprika on mines.
My mommy and my godmommy did the same thing.
Ugh the memories 😭
Thank you. I kept looking for a good recipe, this being the first time making potato salad, and could not find a good one. They always had some extra weird things I don't really care for. I followed yours, mostly I added green onion instead of chives, and it turned out fantastic. Thank you so much.
I love this guy! I could watch him cook anything. He’s just camera ready and so relatable.
Imma need more Cookout to do's and don'ts
This should be called "Don't get cute. The cookout addition" lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
LOLOL!

NOBODY GONNNA TALK ABOUT “i’m gonna go take a walk around the corner with my cousins” 😂😂 now that’s a black cookout classic
come back eyes red and ready to eat some stuff UP
Now you know we heard that 😂😂
I caught it and it made me chuckle.
Well look at that. I just became black.
EJ Fields 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I absolutely loved THIS video! I'm a subscriber for life. I'm getting older and haven't had a cookout in years, I was double checking what my Mama and I used to make. PERFECT!
I’m crying at the “I’m pushing it with the stone ground mustard” 😂😩 when I saw him put in there , I’m like oh he’s getting freaky 😂😂😭
Konica TV lol right
I hollered
😭😂
🤣❤
Hahahaha so true!
"If you grew up in a black household you know everything gets onion powder, garlic powder and paprika" Yes Sir #ADOS
He forgot Lawry’s season salt 😂
Facts! 🙌🏾
ADOS Hebrewess OMG! Yesssss! Don’t forget Tony Chachere’s, Lawry’s, and the salt with the little girl holding the umbrella 😂
Apparently all this time, my Italian Grandmother was black and I didn't even know it... she even said alot of the same things as she taught me to cook! Lol!
or if you grow up in a Hungarian household... seriously though literally all our foods start with oil/grease onions, garlic, and paprika. And then you can get fancy with the rest lol
So, my friend brought potato salad to my mom’s cookout 2 years ago, and he made the mistake of putting raisins in the salad. Hell was raised. I had to cover for him.
LOL, oh my gosh, I flinched when I read "raisins"! You are a good friend! 😂

What would I like to bring to the cookout. ... Southern fried chicken. ... or baby back ribs. I'd LOVE to see both of those recipies from you!
I like the new man, he explains things really well, but I also like the normal format. Both are great.
I don’t think anyone caught the “walk around the corner with my cousins” 👀😂 OH you black black 😂😂

Why are you going around the corner? 🤣
I've looked at lots of potato salad recipes and I can assure you that yours is number one of the top three. I AM definately bougie enough for the Dijon and hot sauce, and that has set you apart from the rest. I mix miracle whip and mayo to so when I saw your receipeI knew I'd been waiting for this all my life😂.
The way he said “cousiiiiinnnn” when the video started just warmed my heart and I know this video was gone be goodt! I used his method making my potato salad and added my own twist to it and let me tell y’all my family loveeeeed it and I’m the one in the family who can’t cook so that should tell y’all something! Thank you for this recipe
“Hm. This does not bring dishonor to our ancestors. Approved!” Major Mulan vibes 😂🤣
"Has anyone said raisins?"
"Yes"
"Raisins"
She had me cracking up
Me too
Great and funny personality to go along with the great instructions. Everybody and their momma has posted cooking videos, but yours are indeed special.
i love this!! and your explanation about what size to cut the pieces is so good and helpful!
“Mmm. This does not bring dishonor to our ancestors, approved!” 😂
This does not bring dishonor to our ancestors! Love that!!!😂👍
I do too!
Kaff231 well it was invented by Germans
Karen B nobody’s mad about your pathetic racist asses having a barbecue so don’t even try that you old hateful heifer but don’t try and claim something that’s not even yours and try to tell others how they can and can’t make it,the truth is we don’t give a fuck about your stupid ass barbecue so get over yourselves because you’re not special
Why is there always one asshole?!
@@JW-qj3se German potato salad is vinegar based and served hot, not the same thing at all. That's like saying the Chinese invented lasagna because the noodle originated from China. "American potato salad" takes inspiration from a melting pot of cultures and is a product of the mass immigration and colonization of the Americas, as is all of the mayo-based salads.
Come through potato salad! More Jermaine, please.
I just finished making this potato salad recipe not even 10 minutes ago minus the hot sauce. I tried it warm and my goodness the flavor is AMAZING. I can't wait to try it cold tomorrow once all the flavors really seep in. Thank you so much for posting this video. Hands down the best potato salad recipe I've ever came across. I dub thee my official go to receipe 🤗🤗🤗
I thought the “raisin” thing was a joke until last year when Jen from accounting actually put raisins in the potato salad for the office potluck 🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Lol 😂🤣😂🤣
Karen from finance loves to add raisins
I've never seen such a thing, upscaled or not. It just seems like such a left field thing.
I’ve literally never seen a raisin in potato salad before, and apparently that makes me lucky because it seems like it’s a traumatic experience for those who have seen it
😂😂😂
I've seen grapes, which is worse.
Lol
My mother use to put bacon crumbles in her tatter salad
@Michelle Barns me neither and trust me it would be for me lmao
That’s exactly what I said. My grandmother used to make this all the time and it was the best! Now I’m seeking to make this too with the exact, and I mean EXACT same taste.
Him: adds hot sauce
Me: aight imma head out
I’ll try it
@@ajstevenson6384 to each their own. If you love it I like it😂❤❤

The bowl was stressing me out I was like how he gonna mix
omg me too lol
Been in that situation, too... Then try to find another bowl for the extra... And no way do the ingredients split equally...
I thought I was the only one who felt this
The whole time!!!!!
Lol me too
This is cookout worthy 👍🏾😊 However every Black family has variations to this recipe but he definitely has the basics down. For instance some Black families would never use Miracle Whip or stone ground mustard. Some prefer Dukes or Hellmann's mayo, and for mustard Goldens Spicy Brown Mustard. Some only use sweet relish and not dill. Every Black family is different but I applaud the fact that Tasty has decided to set the record straight regarding potato salad that will get you in at the cook out.👍🏾😊💗
Jaddictive69 so true when he added hotsauce I was like who does that, but everyone jazzes it their own way
Very true! My aunt only uses hellmann's mayonnaise
I’m gonna be honest, I put hot sauce in/on a lot of stuff lol. I also noticed a lot of ppl add vinegar and sugar to make Mayo taste like miracle whip but like you said it’s a preference thing. Thanks for watching ✊🏾
Never, ever, ever Miracle Whip. Ever.
Agreed I was like....stone ground mustard??.... Hot sauce??....
This looks like the perfect recipe; can’t wait to make it!!! You were so entertaining, great video!!!
Your potato salad looks great! I have NEVER heard of putting raisins in it. Love your personality.
Appreciate you shouting out those of us that don't eat pork. Can't stand it when Aunt Sheila cooks. She do it on purpose.
Omg totally agree I can't stand pork I even throw up just eating it
yessss, I loved that! Most recipes either don't need it or it can be substituted for turkey bacon or smoked turkey necks.
I don't mean to come off as ignorant/rude but I'm curious why you don't eat pork?
TheDivide9 for myself, about 15 years ago I was having an allergic reaction to pork products. I cut it out from my diet, and when I tried reintroduce it a few months later I became very ill. Throughout the years I’ve had it sneaked into my food and my body knows immediately I’ve eaten pork. I miss ribs and pepperoni pizza like crazy but I can’t eat it anymore.
@@MizGator Thanks for your reply!
Omg. It's so simple but I never thought to grate the onion. I can't stand the texture of chunky chonks of onion but love the flavor it brings. Thank you!
Chunky chonks! I'm hoping that was not a typo! love
I've resorted to using my chopster to grind up the onions and then strain the water off, adding only very finely minced onions. I do that for almost everything, that demands not seeing but only tasting onions.
I use a food processor
@@IsrebaWheeler yes. You have to remove that onion juice or it will spoil the potato salad much quicker.
@@kokolatte825 exactly.
My grandma used sweet and dill so I do too..never seen anyone else until you!! It makes a difference
The Chef , Jermaine , was very knowledgeable and funny. He made the video creative yet a bit humorous ! I made the potato salad and my sons loved it ! 👍🏽
"I like my potato salad cold, like every other black person"
Lolzs
I like mines Warm like freshly done warm with hot sauce lol
@@preshizpink4340 glad I'm not the only one, lol.
People who hot up potato salad need to be stoned to death
I like mines warm tbh but I am light skin. 😁🤫🤓
I'm black and over 60 years old. I can eat it both ways. However, I prefer it warm.
Growing up with a black southern mother, she taught us that “you can’t eat everybody potato salad”, but everyone LOVED her potato salad though. I would eat this one because it looks like genuine potato salad. I love this guy! Well done sir!
Don't like it.
Native-Kitty you know what’s funny? I had only had potato salad at family functions growing up. So I went to an amusement park as a field trip in middle school and noticed that the potato salad was hella white but didn’t know that some ppl don’t know how to make it. Man I was mad about my money and the nasty mayo that I tasted 🤮 I learned quickly from that day to be selective with who I eat potato salad from.
We grew up saying "Who made that, who made that"😂😂. We don't eat everybody's potato salad or greens PERIODT!
I wouldn't not.
@@kdrew8679 Or mac and cheese.
I’m not black, but this IS the recipe I remember my grandma making!!!❤️
Thank you for this! Just inspired me to make the best tasting potato salad I've made or tasted. And no raisins.
And no hot sauce!
This is my mother's potato salad! She is literally the only one in our large family that makes it - it's that good. She doesn't add miracle whip but yes on everything else. Let me tell you, part of the special "MUAH" is the dash of celery salt! Great video keep them coming!
What is the miracle whip?
“I’m about to take a walk around the corner with my cousins” I legit LOL’d so loud!!! 😂😂
Also, love the paprika (a first), and leaving the potato skins on (also a first). Thanks a million!
More CookOut Recipes from Jermaine please!! I looked at his instagram - I knew he was from Maryland!! CookOuts and lightening bugs!!
I really like the grated onion idea💡! So hard to chopped small & evenly.
Not only would this be a much nicer texture, it would save so much time! I am definitely remembering this tip.
I’m lazy so I shred it in my food processor.
Genius!
When I was pregnant I gained almost 70lbs. 80% of it was potato salad.
Melissa Panda lol my weight game during my pregnancy game from sweet potato pie 😂🤣 but I’m sure if my grandma was around it would have been potato salad😂
Sounds like as good pregnancy
Same lol and mash potatoes of course
🤣🤣that’s why I’m on here now
😂😂😂 mine was hot dogs and lemonade.
Finally.... someone who actually knows how to cook potatoe salad. This is the recipe that my family used when I was growing up.
Mmmmmm, Jermaine.....loved your video! Your presentation was spot on. Love how you explain what & why you do certain things. I especially liked how you were sure to honor your family traditions. So often, traditions get lost because the youngsters don't understand how important it is to carry on the family legacy. Especially when cooking.
Since you mentioned it several times, let me say that it has been my experience, that because Black people are so steeped in family history, they cook the best foods. It's old stool; it's back to basics; it's real down home cookin'. They don't call it SOUL food for nothing.
Well done, Sir. Thank you very much for sharing. Guess I'm gonna have to go put some potatoes on to boil now. 😁😊😁
I won't lie I was a little shook when he said a lot of black people don't eat pork because greens and ham hocks are a southern classic. But then I remembered a lot of black people are Muslim. 😅 Also who the hell puts raisins in a damn potato salad?
Plus pork makes me nauseous. My mom grew up with pig feet, pig ears, the whole damn animal on the plate and that concept completely turned me off to all pork lol and most meats in general tbh
Grew up eating greens with Turkey necks. I think it just depends on the family.
white people
EJ Fields for the raisins that’s white Americans. Potato Salad was invented by Europeans after all
it's actually really interesting about black people not eating pork. My family is from Jamaica and mostly identifies as Christian, and at least 1/2 of them don't eat pork. Part of it is biblical and then 1/2 of it is the Rastafarian culture. That being said we do eat some pork but on rare occasions when cooking Jamaican food i.e. pigs tail stew pea
when he said we want it how our grandmama made it, i thought he was gonna put some lawrys seasoning salt in it. that got put on EVERYTHING
First visit to your channel. Your recipe produced the best PS I've ever made OR tasted. I only had one kind of mustard, but after one bite, I didn't care. Love the method of choosing ingredients by the ran-out-one-thing-so-I-used-another method. Outstanding!
Okay, so it off to the grocery store and time for ingredients to make potato salad. I will bring a list and have a budget! This is going to be amazing!!
“I’m about to take a walk around the corner with my cousins”. Every single time lmao
I finally found someone that makes potato salad like me minus the hot sauce, and stone ground mustard. I’m not that Bougie yet, but I will be Easter 2020 😜🐰🐣 Thank you 😊
Hey now to the Easter 2021 Potatoe salad
"Walk around the corner with my cousins" Hahah aaaaaight!💯 Loved the bouillon. Will be adding it for now on.
I'm white but I grew up with a black grandmother that raised me I loved ❤ her God bless her soul she passed away she made the best foods she's the one that put me in to School to become a chef because she was a chef at the Italian-American social club all the Italians loved her it was her kitchen and everything was left up to her to pick what foods to eat
“Swinin’ and Dinin’”😂😂

Potato salad is mot worthy of the cookout
it was a underhanded stereotypical racist comment. Apparently white people do.
I went to a office party once, and a "Becky" had brought in her Potato Salad that had raisins with radishes and relish. I was like oh no, oh no, oh no no no.........

Now I’m petrified to make potato salad.
I made this & everyone loved it. Only tweaks I did was use Frank's Xtra Hot & instead of paprika I garnished with cayenne pepper. Everyone still loved the subtlety of the heat as it was still balanced with the rest of the dish.
Walk around the corner with my cousin 😂😂 great video!! You need your own show on the Food Network!! I do mayo & miracle whip and dill & sweet relish!! Making this in a few, thanks for posting!
“this ain’t just for you, this for everybody” THANK YOU
