Not underrated but one of their worst. Only RISK is worse. Cryptic Writings is one of the most uninspired and boring metal albums ever. FFF fantastic? It is a musical equivalent of waving the white flag. This is the sound of Megadeth giving up.
According to Dave Ellefson the bassist, in his book he said the record label and producer for this album and the next one were trying to push the band into more of a radio friendly pop sound to try and attract more people that weren't really into metal music. And even though they went reluctantly went along with it, they weren't happy about it. Except for the guitarist Friedman who wanted the band to experiment with a different sound.
Record label or not, this was definitely influenced by Marty. Sadly, he still wound up leaving soon after the Risk album and going to Japan. Even though Megadeth was more commercial during the Freidman years (which metalheads tend to call selling out), the guitar playing was top notch. Die-hard Megadeth fans point to earlier albums, but the sales on Youthanasia and Countdown to Extinction cannot be ignored.
I wasn't thrown off by this album when it came out. It seemed like a perfectly natural progression from Youthanasia. That run in the 90s was just epic. Rust in Peace to Countdown to Extinction to Youthanasia to Cryptic Writings. All knock outs. (We don't talk about Risk.)
set the world afire, the first song written specifically for megadeth as a band which dave wrote on the bus back home not hours after getting kicked out of metallica, the remaster specifically is one of their best songs
Don't forget that most of these bands like Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax etc that made trash and speed metal poplular, grew up on hard rock and earlier metal so it's not unusual for them to go back to their roots at times. Also, it's interesting that younger people like yourself and other reactors are so thrown off when a band changes up things withing a song. The use of dynamics, tempo change, varied instrumentation and other methods were common throughout the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s in various styles of music. This is one of the things that kept it so fresh and interesting and it lacks in todays music. They are like plot twists or new character introductions in movies. Embrace creativity!
A lot of rock/metal bands over the decades were "lured" by the possibility of making a 'hit' record that appealed outside their fanbase... Sometimes it worked; most times, it was a failure. Kiss recorded 2 disco albums in 1979/ '80... then a trippy orchestral album in 1981... Metallica went from riffing metal in 1991 to plodding 'alternative' and southern rock in 1996/ '97... Def Leppard went 'pop' in 1996 and 2002... U2 also recorded a 'pop' album in 1997 that was a misstep... etc. In the 90's, Megadeth was one of the few metal bands that actually saw sales increase from the 80's... but Dave Mustaine had this 'rivalry' w/ Metallica and wanted their level of success... their 1994 album 'Youthanasia' was an attempt to streamline their sound, but it sold platinum (Metallica's 'black album had sold 9 million copies at that point) ... After taking a break, Megadeth returned in 1997 w/ the album 'Cryptic writings'... Mustaine got Foreigner's manager Bud Prager on board, and decided to aim for an album w/ both speed metal and radio-friendly tracks. 'Trust' was a radio-friendly one and became a #1 single on rock radio... the album still barely sold 1 million copies (Metallica's 'Load' album in 1996 sold 4 million copies) which was still big, but not good enough for Mustaine. Megadeth went even further into a pop direction w/ their 1999 album 'Risk' and that barely sold a half million copies in the US... it also marked the end for longtime members Nick Menza (drums) & Marty Friedman (lead guitar) in Megadeth...
Thank you guys for this reaction. This is one of my favorite songs and my favorite Megadeth song. This was from their album "Cryptic Writings." Next check out any song from their "Youthanasia" album. It is so underrated. "A Tout Le Monde" or "Blood of Heroes" would be a couple suggestions.

If you liked that you should try the”Trust” video from “That One Night in Buenos Aires”! The crowd (and their participation) and Dave singing in Spanish will blow you away!
Megadeth is Dave Mustaine. That’s it. It’s his band. He started it with Ellefson, but now has about as many ex-band members to fill an orchestra. He’s all that’s left now, but continues to pick some of the best talent to represent his Megadeth branding. Also, the Megadeth album “The System Has Failed” was originally intended to be a Dave Mustaine labeled solo project. He brought in ex-Megadeth lead guitarist Chris Poland for solos only on most tracks, and other session musicians like Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and Jimmie Lee Sloas on bass. Later, Mustaine eventually gave up on the solo project idea, branding the album a Megadeth release. Which means that Megadeth *is* and has always been Dave Mustaine’s solo project.
Trust is a continuation of an instrumental called "absolution". It was originally recorded during the youthanasisa period, released during cryptic writings.
This is an old video, the noise at the beginning was the ending of whatever he finsished editing last... most likely the megadeth song prior to this one.
You should react to Megadeth's song called Liar from the album So Far So Good So What? He sings about their former bandmate Chris Poland, since he was a liar who stole Mustaine's music equipement and sold them tp buy drugs. It's basically a disstrack, it's very good and I believe you would like it since you've heard songs from Peace sells album that Chris Poland made with Mustaine before getting kicked out after peace sells!
The beginning of the video was the ending of another song by Megadeth called "Skin of my Teeth", the first song of their 1992 album "Countdown to Extinction". I'm sure Lex would like it but I'm almost sure Brad wouldn't :D The lyrics are almost a contrast to the song's delightful tone, about clinging on to life by the skin of your teeth. The solo is 1 minute long and it's a masterpiece.
Brad and Lex thank you for turning me on to this song. I have been listening to Dave Mustaine for a long time and I had never listened to any songs off the cryptic writings album. And that is why I like your show keep up the awesome work you two do. God bless you and your family Amen.
The very short burst of music you heard at the beginning was a Megadeth song called High Speed Dirt, which is an awesome song. No idea why around 1 second if it would be before Trust. They're not even on the same album. Trust is a more of a pop song for Megadeth. But it's still very cool.
Megadeth was made by the original guitarist from Metalia Dave Mustaine. Dave created what we know today as Death Metal by playing really fast in a deep dark way. Even the lead singer of Metalica admitted that was true.
If y'all are going down the Megadeth rabbit hole you oughtta check out "Ashes In Your Mouth". Either the album version off of Countdown To Extinction or the live version from Rude Awakenings are excellent choices. You won't be disappointed.

It's funny to think back that at the time, so many metal fans were too busy being furious about Megadeth "selling out" and "not being metal anymore" to realise that what Megadeth *had* done was write a damn perfect rock song.
For some reason, the very beginning of this video has the last second and a half, or so, of "High Speed Dirt" (Megadeath song from the "Countdown to Extinction" Album)... it was really weird.

Use the man is one of my favourites off cryptic writings
Megadeth’s Train of Consequences is great too!
Love this song
Someone else said you should give "Sweating Bullets" a listen, and I have to agree with that.
That was the end of "Skin of my teeth" at the beginning
My fave of theirs 🔥
For a really different sounding Megadeth song, try Ecstasy from their album Risk.
Risk is very under-rated. If it didn't have the Megadeth label on it, it would be considered a really great album.
Wow, I really dig that intro!
This entire album is one of Megadeth's best. Not a bad track on the entire thing.
Totally kicks ass 🤘
I really enjoyed this reaction. We get to see you both react to the song being 'something you wouldn't expect' from Megadeth. Brad even knows their 'sound' from Rust in Peace,....well done Brad. I encourage you two to do any song from the album Dystopia.
