  • John Piper recently tweeted some interesting thoughts about corporate worship and whether you can do simple things like sip coffee during that worship experience. Yeah, it's odd.

I think some people take meeting with God way too casually, but sipping coffee is not the problem. But if your life is complete by the aroma of roasted beans and not the aroma of God's presence then you might have to really consider what's going on in your heart. As Piper would say, 'I don't need the arommma of a bean!!! I need to treasure the arommma, of Him!!!!'

Even if my life _is_ completed by the roasted bean on a superficial level, who created that roasted bean? Who created me with the taste buds to enjoy it? That’s right, God did.

I’m not fond of food or drink in the sanctuary for the simple reason that people (especially children) tend to spill things and may not clean them up.

Worship and focus on God is a heart issue. Here is what I call legalistic thinking - the broad brush determination that coffee (or anything else) in church signifies intent (lack of seriousness) which is a heart attitude. If coffee is associated with casualness in one person’s life, then they shouldn’t bring coffee. If not, the person. Is free. Isn’t this the lesson of Paul’s instruction in 1 Corinthians 8?
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1)

I see your point, and agree. I find it funny that as someone who has never brought drinks into a worship service (and probably never will) for the reasons you mention, I am arguing for the other side.

Yeah I see his point but I think John Piper made a mountain out of a mole hill on this one

I do like when John Piper talks about making war on the flesh on that Tedashii song, “Make War”.

I think it’s completely reasonable to mandate no eating and drinking (necessary sip of water aside) during the formal part of the worship service. That’s because we are to give our full attention to the minister in his sermon and our whole bodies to God in singing or when saying the creed corporately, etc.
Outside of the sermon and singing though, I see absolutely no issue with it.

John Piper says if his wife dies, that is a test on whether he loves his wife or God more. Why don’t u do a video about that

John Piper is right, but… why should anyone take evangelical services seriously? They are basically just concerts with a lecture half way through. Church goers are basically just following the example set by the church leaders

I think fellow believers need to chill. People who come to church are all at different places in their lives with different things happening. What most people look for from others when they are attending a service is fellowship and acceptance not nitpicking judgement. So drink up me hearties and enjoy your cup of Java.

Sigh, I wish we were more concerned with abuse in the church than with worrying about coffee in the sanctuary. This is another of those issues that we should leave to the conscience of each christian rather than create man made rules and add more law on to people.

I try not to comment too often. But you deserve response and applause. I cannot even imagine anything that would be a better response to this video. It was sublime, and You should hold your head high today. I will be sharing this video and your thoughts with a couple friends who are well versed enough in Piper to appreciate your comments as much as I do. You brightened my day, thank you.

@Falcon-um7voAmen. Why so many can understand that all of it is about worshipping God, The Creator of all. How sad how many Christians forgot (or don't understand at all) the holiness of God.
