    There actually IS a good way to turn the parking brake adjustment wheel. There's a slot in the backing plate with a rubber plug in it. Take that plug out and, Presto!, you can reach that adjustment wheel with a brake spoon. Almost like it was put there specifically for that purpose. . .

    • @HandsOnDismantler
      @HandsOnDismantler  3 года назад +1

      Hi Jerry, I talked about that in the video and why it’s not as easy as you say in your comment makes it out to be on this particular truck. 👍

      @@HandsOnDismantler I'm kinda thinking, without going back to review the entire video, that someone put the rubber plug for your adjustment port in from the wrong side... At any rate, that whole process is designed to be very simple and generally is unless somebody gets in and messes it up. Doesn't really matter if you've already got the rotors off, but you should be able to adjust your parking brakes without even putting your truck up on a jack stand.

      @@HandsOnDismantler Yep. That was good to show. I just felt like you could have included a little bit more on how you could do this without dismantling the rotors just so your viewers would know that it can be done even by people who don't want to get that deep into the brakes. Good video, though.

    For those adjusting inside the wheel and for future reference the passenger side spins out to tighten and the driver side spins in.
    I jacked up the rear of my vehicle and applied the ebrake till I could feel it engage the brake and tightened each side till I had equal drag on both wheels.

    Also, an actual brake adjusting tool is what you need. They're pre-bent and you can get one pretty cheap in a complete brake tool set either at Harbor Freight or a pawn shop (where I got mine for $10). Of course you could buy a quality, brand name set, but for the minimal time I need them, a cheapy is just fine. And beats the heck out of a screw driver.

      90 degree pliers, or use a brake spoon - place the grommet on its tip and push it in.
      90 degree pliers to remove the grommet as well, very helpful.
      This is one particular park brake/brake job that it really helps to have brake spoons.

      you might want to safely suspend the vehicle so that the rear wheels are able to rotate without the risk of getting hurt or the vehicle falling, and allowing the wheels to rotate while you listen for the noise. if the issue is something in the caliper or brakes you should be able to hear it. my 02 Silverado has a noise that i haven't been able to track down since i bought it. sounds similar to what you're describing.

  • @bradgris8918
    @bradgris8918 Год назад

    The purpose of removing the brake caliper is so that you can more easily sense when the parking brake no longer contacts the drum because the drag of the disc brakes will not be present.

    • @HandsOnDismantler
      @HandsOnDismantler  Год назад

      That’s another way of looking at it. Although the drag from your brake pads shouldn’t be that significant. You should be able to lift the rear tires and spin freely with the brake caliper on as well. Thanks brad!

      @@HandsOnDismantler Mine is a 2500HD , same as yours. I did a little googling and found that there is a tool made for that, called a brake adjustment spoon. Basically a curvy bent screwdriver. I found a piece of scrap metal 1/2-3/4" wide X 1/4" thick bar that i ground to about 1/8" thick, bent it at 30-40 degrees 2.5 inched from the end, followed by a couple for bends and it worked well. Sound more complicated than it was.
      Short answer, the adjustment star turn towards the inside of the parking brake assembly, same as the passenger side, but upside down.

    • @dnlmachine4287
      @dnlmachine4287 2 года назад +2

      In the video at 6:37 we can see that the adjuster LONGER THREADED SLEEVE faces FORWAD. USUALLY it is placed the same way on BOTH wheels. images.thdstatic.com/productImages/71b6fd15-f929-4dc2-a7dc-4abca16d634d/svn/first-stop-brake-parts-hw1545-64_1000.jpg
      The adjuster SCREW is a right hand (normal) thread, and screws into the SLEEVE.
      The screw has the STAR attached to it. Turning the Star/Screw Clockwise/INTO the Sleeve...shortens the assembly = retract/loosen the parking brake shoes away from the drum. Counter Clockwise backs the Screw OUT of the Sleeve, lengthening the adjuster assembly = expand/tighten parking brake shoes against the drum.
      - So: on this truck, Passenger side - when the OUTBOARD side of the star wheel rotates UP, it is turning Counter Clockwise OUT of the adjuster sleeve and expanding/tightening the park brake. Driver side - when the OUTBOARD side of the star wheel rotates DOWN, it is turning Counter Clockwise OUT of the adjuster sleeve and expanding/tightening the park brake.
      Stay gold.

      I’ve never experienced this 😳. But from my experience there could be a few things causing them to fail. #1 not greased (they could be getting stuck/jammed) #2 they are adjusted too tight. #3 failed or bad hardware. Consider getting a higher quality hardware. And I wouldn’t reuse any of the components that were part of the failure. I’d replace it all if this is a big problem for the truck.
