  • What a battle to replace a parking brake cable on a 2002 2500HD Chevy! But as always TDM wins!
Before anyone starts saying to loosen the adjuster to give more slack, on this particular set up, THERE IS NO ADJUSTER TO LOOSEN! And the cable was released and at rest as far as it could be.

This video shows how to reset the ratcheting emergency brake pedal: ruclips.net/video/ex3rlTG-lFc/видео.html
I did not have to pry up on the mechanism as he did. I just knelt outside the drivers door. Make sure that the pedal is all the way up. I then grabbed the brake cable under the truck with my left hand and with my right index finger reaching over the pedal arm, I pressed on the spring that he indicated in his video and pulled on the cable with my left hand. The important part is to keep full tension on the cable so that the ratchet doesn't recoil. If you keep the tension on it while working all of the slack back to where the two cables connect, there will be enough to connect the two with no problem. At least for me it worked this way. It took a couple of tries to do it without the mechanism reeling it back in on me but I did eventually get it. As a side note, I couldn't find the correct position for the screwdriver to hold the ratchet back so I just did this without it. I appreciate both videos, yours and his. They were both helpful in completing the job.

Just replaced all the cables on a 98 GMC K 1500. After a lot of choice words and determination was able to complete. It was a pain though. A trick my buddy came up with to release the cable from the retainers was a boxed in half inch wrench to slide over the cable to release the tabs.

I found your video as I had the same problem you did trying to connect the single cables together. So I undid the connections at each brake. I then connected the single cable under the cab and pulled hard to set it deep in the joiner. I then hooked in the passenger side cable end loop and pulled on the whole brake cable (pulled on sheath and all) and got tonnes of slack and slid on the spring and easily popped in the plastic stop. Did the same on the drivers side and it really only took about 15 min once I figured that out. There must be a spring in the cab somewhere that allowed slack when the pulling on the cable sheath. I had the clamp bolts all undone till the end. I could easily change the set now. I did have problems getting the single link appart like you did. Pounded it out with a flat screw driver after I cut the broken brake cable off.

Enjoyed your video, but was disappointed when you failed to show the connecting of the cables. I have just done a complete rear brake job on my 2007 Sierra 2500 HD Classicwith all new parts, including backing plates, and was at a loss as to how to get the two ends of the cable to meet. Scrolling down in the comments of your video, I found a link to the E brake pedal, and the fact that it has a take up spool kind of like a roll up window shade. Learned how to release the slack, and with some choice words, and some Mcgivering, got the cable end into place. Have been out for a test drive, and all is as it is supposed to be. Really enjoy your videos! Just a small suggestion tho, I see the dust shield/back plate is gone from that side. I’ve learned thru the years that running these chevys without one with rear disk brakes sure will greatly accelerate inner pad wear I guess the weather really gets to them - forgive the foul word but dorman makes a 2 piece shield that actually works pretty good & isn’t much $
    Cheers!

Funny you should mention that. They lay on my workbench for over a year. To replace them I need to pull the axles again and put new seals in. I figured I would wait until the seals start leaking again (with all they salt they use around they will start leaking again!) and do the whole job then.

After trying some brute force things. I put a propane torch on the coupler. Then spread the coupler with some decent snap ring pliers. Put some WD 40 on it. Then used channel locks fully open to grab the cable end and the other end of the coupler. It slid right out. I was surprised.
