By refraining from singing in the second half of the song Dave shows mercy on the audience. You have to wonder, going into this performance the band and video producers had to know that Dave's vocals weren't up to snuff, and yet they not only chose to proceed with the recording, but also with the release after it was clear that his voice was just an awful, gravelly mess. It shows such disrespect for the fans.
I agree with you that Dave's voice sounds a bit off here. I think you also reacted to Devotional, where his singing on halo is really on point. I think it's just this tour. He nailed the next tour from Playing the Angel in Milan in 2006.
The best live performance of Halo was of course during the world violation tour in 1990 and the devotional tour in 1994. Halo is quite a demanding song to sing, and it gets harder and harder for Dave to maintain the quality of these songs live the older he gets. The vocal position becomes more strained, especially in the more difficult songs. But gratifying to hear that at least the song's original arrangement is still intact here in 2001. In recent years, the sound bank of many of the songs has been replaced, after which many of these older songs have been given a new sound arrangement. Unfortunately, it becomes a negative for many of Depeche Mode's songs when their distinctive sound is stripped away, in my opinion.
Unfortunately there's no *official* audio album for the World Violation Tour 1990 where songs like Halo sounded the best but there is some good audio still out there if you wanna listen to it 👀
@@GeorgeDeminI know there is which was never released hence why I said *no official* there are some good sounding soundboard audios and Steve Lyon still has the recordings of them
I love this version !!!! He looks so freaking hot in this concert!!! This concert remembers me my brother that is in heaven now … i love this concert!!
This is my favourite live version of Halo and yes - I like it even more than Devotional. I know for many it will sound almost sacrilegious, but it’s true. The last twenty seconds or so are so climactic you can’t even put it into words ‘cause it’s pure feelings of joy
I saw them live on this tour. Toronto 16 6 2001.. Second gig of the tour .the sound was amaaaazing... Daves voice was increíble. I.went to pee on freelove... And enjoy the silence started.... So I went full wet...
YEAH ... I can definitely see where you're coming from here. I saw them live on this tour; what I saw was better, but as with all things, each performance varies. Devotional was on point, Live audio from The World Violation Tour was top-notch for this song as well..... WAIT 'til you hear the life version from *THE DELTA MACHINE Tour* my friend! 😁 *Speechless* ......... I agree that Martin, Georgia, and Jordan are on point though...... they ladies have some stunning moments during the Paris performance; not giving anything away. Cheers Mate!!!
We all have preferences to this performance. I’m not a fan of the background singers. Martin can carry that job brilliantly on his own. Having seen this live it was a great experience for me.
For my taste, Dave's voice is very raspy on this tour, probably also on the next one although better than here, I don't know if it is due to Dave's addiction problem that left him handicapped at this point, but as they progress The tours he started to sing better, at least until the one in 2009 or 2013, but on this one I'm sorry to say that I was never convinced by how Dave sings, he really forces his voice, it's a shame because when he has to sing softly he does it great, ahh but the I think the performance on this tour is Dave's best, along with that of the Playing The Angel Tour, and the music is very good.
Yes -- Dave is performing his a-- off here but during a lot of this particular show his voice is strained and off. Which is why I've always thought Martin carried this concert. He and the backup singers -- Jordan and Georgia -- are fantastic. Even though Dave's voice isn't at its best, there's something about this tour I love, there's an amazing energy and positivity. I love Devotional, and it's perfection, but Martin and Andy looked so miserable.
Watching this and you starting to talk about Dave's voice not having...... something.... then later that Martin, though, is on point.... I had to pause, put on headphones, and take it back a few seconds for the chorus and to play the rest through. It sounds to me like Dave is tightening down his diaphram for some reason. The problem doesn't sound to be at all laryngeal and I know my own voice has a similar "meh" limitation when I do that. Just not enough airflow and tightened innards makes vocals sound really lacking even if your throat is 100% a-okay. You can use the same *intentionally* for chosen timbre shifts and such, but when it's unintentional it makes a voice..... lackluster, I guess is a way to phrase it. I really like how he sounds in other songs on this tour (as have said before, not sure what clips I've seen were from this specific performance night) but yeah, here on Halo it's disappointing. I *was* really happy with the music's bounce they gave it for the live. Keeping it true to the album but also being sure to heighten the energy for a concert. To Martin's voice, I can't even hear him without headphones.... except during short moments when he trails off a part of a second after the other backup singers. I really feel in this song he needed to be higher in the mix because even *with* my headphones on his harmonizing is so close in with them and low-mix that I can't distinguish him from them most of the time. At all. Mind you, for this song not very much higher in the mix, only a slight tad to let the bright tones of his voice show more especially with harmonizing with the darker vocal tones of the women. I think the balance there lacked. All in all, nice to hear it, especially the music... but for the vocals all around I wasn't thrilled on this one.
Thank you 😊 Seph, I do like it (the song 🎵 that),and said something about the original recording, well my oldest brother uses to have some collection of music 🎶 🎵 from Depeche mode (at the time)and 1 of them was [in fact]Violator, so I would of heard the song 🎵 anyway, also I don't know if you remember the video (as well), all I think of it features a[young]rising star named Jenna Elfman (not all of us [like me]would remember it), but every time I hear the name, all I can think is Dharma (aka Jenna)from Dharma and Greg... also I think 🤔 live version may not have the best nostalgia but I give a 5 out of 10... thank 👏 you.
No, we’re not going to disappear because you're complaining; on the contrary, it's very interesting. And surprising too. I expected to see you in a trance! Because to me, this version is pure trance, regardless of Dave's absence in this part! There's so much happening around! Dave sings less because he completely surrenders to the moment; I find the capture of the ending extraordinary. I've replayed it countless times. But once again, I understand your point of view from the highly calibrated studio version, and it's very interesting.
At this point in the tour, Dave's voice was stressed, and he couldn't hit the higher notes, especially if it was a softer tone, to get close to those notes he had to use more air and sing louder. Unfortunately, this happens on several of their tours, mainly from SOFAD tour and forward. Dave has had some vocal coaching and in the more recent tours his voice doesn't seem destroyed as often. On the flip side, being able to watch him being the frontman on the stage and his reactions to the crowd and band members are pretty special. A little give and take on their live stuff at times. I get frustrated when it doesn't sound as crisp as the studio album. I won't go into many details, but the SOFAD LIVE album does not sound like the studio recordings as far as vocals go on some tracks. However, it is still worth listening to and I would not ever give up that LIVE album. ALAN WILDER makes up for any of the shortcomings, and the energy level is so high. The visuals are great too, especially in the opening song.
Speaking about sound quality: maybe it’s a movie problem. I saw several concerts of that tour (2 in Russia, one in Poland and maybe two in Germany and one more only in audio) - sounded really good, at least some songs were harder and more energetic.
I know exactly what you mean about Dave's vocals, sometimes he can sound a bit nasally. Whether it's due to straining because of the amount of dates on the tour I'm not sure? Still pretty on point though. I didn't notice any of this happening on the last tour.
So agree with you Seph. This was the worst period for me. Martin always A Maze ing. Dave’s voice was nasally and lacking the sumptuous velvety depth we love. Not a fan of backing singers at all. Halo is a classic and this performance didn’t do it justice at all.
No, he doesn't sound right. Here and there the "right Dave" pops up but he sounds forced and coarse. Dave has such nice natural vocals, he doesn't need to force it.
As I told before, the sound is not good, it's not only Dave's voice (even though not as good as in the past)...there's a big lack of reverb in this concert. Apart from that, Martin and the chorists are awsome.
You've already reacted to this song live on the Devotional tour, 1000 times better than this version. Also, please bear in mind that this was only a few years after Dave had is near death experience caused by drugs, his voice was deeply affected after that period.
I'm so glad that they got rid of those backing singers after this tour. They are not bad at all, but it just just does not fit the style of Depeche Mode IMO.
Seph, most people will agree with me that on Exciter Tour Dave is vocal and sings the weakest. I hope that in the future there will be other tours for you, so you can compare them.
Always hated those backing singers, not needed at all and personally I love to hear Dave and Martins voice together without them. Also Halo is such a great song of atmosphere on album /record that is never really sounded polished live imoo.

You've already reacted to a live version of Halo: Devotional Tour 1993.^^
After many months of watching, it finally came to me. Nick Frost. If there are any remakes of Nick Frost movies, I want you to be the star.
You wouldn't believe the amount of comments I get with people saying I look like Nick Frost. Like 3 a week no joke 😂
He is resting during the chorus in most of the songs on tours.

Its tough to be jumping doing high kicks and to sound like the studio...
He’s probably saving himself for the rest of the gig…. Presumably 😜

He’s just preparing for the seventh song, which is true highlight. Agree, his voice is not great, so backup singers and Martin help.

Dave’s live voice changed after his OD for worse. He sounded better in the MM tour. Vaughn George does a full analysis of it in his channel.

no qui gahan ha proprio una voce urlata che non mi piace...poi nei prox concerti peggiora...se ne accorge e ultimamente ha migliorato la sua vocalità
What is missing? It's Alan.
Alan would have voiced discontent to film this video at this point in the tour.
