Remember, he was heavy into heroin and drugs at this time. His voice actually would crack very often during this tour. From what I've seen, it happens in nearly every Devotional performance I've seen. But tbh, it doesn't bother me at all. His voice as a whole is powerful and he's giving everything he has at all times.
I read that Dave shot up a mix of heroin and cocaine called a speedball. He did everything a lead singer should never do: party too much, do tons of drugs and not rest his voice. Since Dave sobered up he even gave up meeting fans after concerts. He apparently goes straight back to his hotel room. He avoids all the addiction triggers.
@@jlcmsw I know thats what he overdosed on in 1996 when he almost died. Not sure how often he actually used a speedball tho. But yea.. he was slowly dying. He never rested, barely ate, tons of drugs, but he still delivered. Im so glad he's still alive and well. Hes the person I admire most in life
I love the Depeche Mode concert on 05 October 1998 in Cologne [HQ] ( ruclips.net/video/ZDTBDDdYv2A/видео.html ). The Singles tour was great, and at least Dave finally looked healthier.
Alan has commented on working with Dave and other singers when recording vocals. He has explained that he often chooses vocal takes that are imperfect or feature acceptable flaws, as the imperfection adds to the "soul" of the performance. This is often what sets even modern Depeche Mode songs apart from other popular acts today, who may comp or autotune vocal takes to technical perfection. A technically perfect performance, even in the classical music arena, can sometimes be criticized by masters as being "perfectly boring," as the human element brings an indescribable quality to the fore that a flawless performance cannot.
As always, DM often uses remixes on their live songs. This is the beginning of "Split Mix". :) Which I prefer than just a boring 3min single mix. Also, the amount of drugs and alcohol during this tour was staggering.
One thing you always get at a Depeche Mode performance is even when Dave takes a break to interact with the crowd, Martin always sings his backing vocals. It’s really a lovely time to hear just his voice. I think in 2003 Martin did a solo tour and it was AMAZING to hear his renditions of Depeche songs.
Yes, a joy to hear Martin's voice and razor-sharp pitch at this time. Unfortunately, he has, consciously or unconsciously, now added a strong vibrato to his voice, which has changed the songs he sings to become more of a cabaret character...
Seph, as another person mentioned earlier, go easy on Dave lol 😅He has been singing incredibly good for more than 1h. Flaws like these can happen while singing live. It’s inevitable. Besides he was quite high on drugs. 😆 It’s quite a miracle he’s been so good and consistant during this 14 month tour 😅 His voice was so deep and rich besides a few flaws. NLMDA is one of my favourite song of theirs as well and I’ve listened to several live renditions of it throughout their career. Personally, I really like the arrangement and the drum dynamic Alan offered during the Devotional tour. Don’t worry Dave will still blow your mind with the remaining songs from Devotional. 😎👍🏼
The whole crowd is still waving. On each and every concert until today. Everyone is waiting for Daves command to start and then the crowd is united by raising their hands and do a little bit of workout. 😄 That is one reason the song has never been taken off of the setlist. Since 101.
I like it, even though the 101 version might be better but unlike the the 101, I think Martin picked up the lyrics that he left off: "See the stars that shine so bright, everything will be alight tonight "?(yes), but I guess maybe Dave wanted the audience to sing his part or something (while he borrowed 1 of members camera 📷)?... thank you 😊 🙏.
I do not think it is bad live version. Yes, it is different than e.g. 101 version. I heard it live. It is pleasure to hear Martin singing along with Dave ("flying high... watching the world...) and also without Dave in the end... I liked this version.
Realmente aprecio que des una opinión honesta sobre lo que piensas, y no seas el típico qué trata de quedar bien con todo el mundo. I love your reactions bro :D❤
Man! You’re expecting perfection from a live performance, I’ve seen Dave trip on stage, and sometimes they had to restart the song because it wasn’t right, has happened on a few shows I’ve been to and on RUclips videos. They are human and it is live!!! This makes it more interesting!
Seph... When Mart sings the chorus while Dave is taking photographs, it's the same melody ( Harmony) that in the album version. In NLMDA, Dave sings only one or two note-melody, and Mart sings that melodic-part. So, That is why NLMDA is a masterpiece! :) And when it comes to Alan who plays the drums. Alan has said, that he had to work x-tra hard to play the drums like "perfect", so that's why he seems to be so focused :)
Dude, you nailed it. Big time praise, brother. After the first chorus I wondered if you were going to cave, but you pulled through. This is, in part, why I love you and your reactions. This was ultimately a pretzel-free zone. 🚫🥨 Virtually every point I wanted to make you ticked off, one-by-one, in your recap at the end. You were at the peak of your reaction powers here. Bravo! As others have said, Dave was really struggling with his vocals. The drugs are showing their effects. It was probably for the best that he skipped the 2nd chorus, because his vocals during the outro were terrible. It was interesting to hear Martin's near perfect isolated chorus vocal harmonies. As others have said, Fletch wasn't singing there. Alan's drumming was dead-on. Just like his keyboard playing, he makes it look easy. That dude has incredible rhythm. The orchestral/choral opening is the same bit from the outro of the song. I friggin' love when you did the "wheat field" arm waving here. (8:52) Your energy was fantastic and you were in a tip-top mood. A total joy to watch.
The beginning is the split mix. You should also listen to the aggro mix. Dave is probably singing it differently because in the performance he actually is living it. When Dave came back from LA for the recording of SOFAD he wanted to make grunge/rock music with DM. That may explain why he started singing differently, more rocky maybe. Here his voice is suffering from the heroïne, coke and speedballs and alcohol. His voice was even worse when they tried to record Ultra. That’s why it took them 13 months to record that album. Dave had to recover from his addiction and needed voice choaching. Meanwhile, not so wellknown, Martin had to desintoxicate from his huge alcohol problem which existed aso during the SOFAD recording. He was never sober in the recording studios. They all had Health issues and hospialisations during this tour: 1. Dave stage dived and fell on chairs with broken ribbs as a result 2. Martine had at least two almost epileptic seizures. Docs explained that the seizures were caused by a brain reaction on the rare moments his body was out of alcohol and drugs 3. Alan was hospitalised for kidney stones due to extreme alcohol abuse 4. Andy was clinically depressed.
A little harsh on Dave Seph, as others have said drugs aside, NLMDA was from Music for the Masses was arguably the pivotal track and was showcased in 101 which encapsulates the 101st and final show of the Tour of The Masses, whereas here many earlier song such as Stripped, Behind The Wheel, and NLMDA have had their overall sound and length altered (electronic or sequenced drums match overall SOFAD sound and not source recording) as this tour showcases the SOFAD tracks, it is unfair to judge each track within a vacuum as they are part of an overall performance and their priority or positioning must be considered in that context. Later in this tour Dave would be so full of drugs that Martin would have to take over all vocals on some shows., Fletch had to leave the tour due to depression with around 30 shows remaining so Alan had to teach his stand in all his parts as Alan knew not only his own parts within a song but Martin and Fletch''s too, and only learned drums to push himself as he was the serious one and was bored. this would be highlighted in why he left, he done all the heavy lifting yet Fletch got paid exactly the same as him for standing and clapping the occasional keyboard line sample or backing vocal, anyway apologies for the tangent
Hi, Seph. I’m enjoying your series of reaction for this stage which is my best favourites DM performance. Anyway, You have to watch the promo video for this song to see why everyone waves. This mimics the fluttering grass that appears in the promotional video. And they were a raging "rock band" during this tour, so I think Dave's rough vocals reflect that!
I remember seeing the World Violation Tour and they had a big screen behind them then, during this song (I think it was Martin?) in a spacesuit come up on the big screen and we all went crazy. So Anton kept the space theme going.
Great song love this live but from the tour for the Masses and 101 they used to play an extended version with break… Maybe the only tour they played a « single » version except the intro from the Split Mix… their choice for this tour. As you mentioned there are some times where Dave’s voice broke maybe drugs was one of the reasons but he used to give everything he has and always do so no problem and in general his voice was amazing too even with all that …it’s live condition and great too
I understand your sentiments, it can be a little disappointing when hey have set such a high standard for themselves. There are a number of far better live versions of this song that will take your breath away in different tours, like One Night In Paris, for example. DM has set an extremely high standard in so many ways up to this point.
HELLO SEPH.. THE INTRO YOU HEARD, AS YOU MENTIONED, IS FROM A REMIX OF THIS SONG, IN FACT DEPECHE MODE HAS MANY MIXES, AND THEY USE SOME OF THEM FOR THEIR LIVE PRESENTATIONS... AND TALKING ABOUT THE END OF THE SONG WHEN THE AUDIENCE WAVES THEIR HANDS THAT PART BEING IN THE CONCERT LOOKS INCREDIBLE, I HOPE AND ONE DAY YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THEM LIVE SO YOU FEEL AS MUCH EMOTION AS MANY OF US. SALUDOS DESDE MEXICO
Hi Seph, even to this day, the band mix up intros, outros and samples from the various remixes from the 12" singles etc, just to make the live show better or more atmospheric or interesting. Alan and his little gang were supremely good at this, it made the shows stunning and exciting for audiences to hear new twists on familiar songs. I hope you get to see them next year! 🤘🤗🥁🎸 Ps A few missed notes are understandable after running around and singing for 1½ hours, go easy on Dave lol
@SephPlays lol, they've all made endearing mistakes over the years, played duff notes, came in at the wrong time and had to restart the song...Dave fell over during World in my Eyes in London 2017, bless him! It's part of what makes a live show great! Love your reaction tho, worried about him 🤗🤗
I have watched this dozens of times and never noticed that before 🤣. To be fair, the version of NLMDA in 101 can never be topped, not just in the sound, but in the circumstances, the crowd, the iconic hand waving, Dave being incredulous at the moment.. which is all good... Devotional with the songs from Violator and SoFad has its own moments 🤩
Poor Dave, he needs to be at 100% for Seph's approval. All kidding aside, 101's performance is probably the best version of this song - the Devotional tour had a really warm sound which I don't think works for some songs, like this one. I remember Dave sounded pretty bad during Exciter tour and Paper Monster tour, but he's really improved since then - perhaps because of more vocal coaching and taking better care of his body. Dave does push himself to 110% and you can tell he gets himself winded at times; this song did come after I Feel You which really pushed Dave.
Don't be too hard on Dave, the Devotional tour was brutal, they did 96 dates and in interviews they said they partied every night between shows. Dave was on drugs, Fletch left the tour early he had a breakdown, Martin was sick at some point too so it was not an easy time. Still they gave their all on every show
This song was performed in the context and style of the concert ... sometime in the future you will watch the whole concert in retrospect under the common message and impression, ... yes, I am sorry that the powerful sound of this song is suppressed here, the start version is here ...ruclips.net/video/gyzVFaMkEVc/видео.html
Appreciate your comments Seph, but I love the imperfections - it makes the live performance special. It's not a mistake as such, his voice just cracked at that point. Dave often doesn't sing the chorus even now, but Martin still sings his parts as backing vocals. Dave always sounds like his voice is on the edge of perfection, if you get what I mean. He is not as naturally in tune as Martin. He has to work at the songs, which is what gives the emotion. To this day, the songs evolve & change live, and don't sound exactly the same from tour to tour. Never Let Me Down Again is still great live today.
@@SephPlays Well said. Love your reactions and I had never watched reaction videos until I saw yours. I feel like I'm watching my Depeche Mode fan life, but speeded up so you don't have to wait for a new album or tour!
This version of 1993 Live is great, but... a comparison with 101. nob. Seth, 1990 is left. AND, in 1993 i miss Marts the guitar playing from NLMDA. He´s on SYNTH. But this Live version is so raw and honest with no extended outro. (Seit 1998 wird es zerdrommelt und elektronisch zerlegt.)
I guess i take for granted that the opening to the song is well known..i hear it and i know exactly it is NLMDA, this for sure isn't the best performance of the song, but I'll take Alan drumming over that drummer they have now, he is so hacky in my opinion. The Arm thing happens every single concert, some better than others but everyone gets into it usually. Just as the Personal Jesus reach out and touch faith happens all the time too.
I felt this was when the drugs kicked in for Dave, which probably led to the voice cracks and him pointing and laughing at something which I’m quite positive was a side effect from the drugs
@@SephPlays most likely considering he’s pointing up to the ceiling and laughing, it’s unlikely that someone would be that high up unless it’s something he’s seeing 😂
@@steviedmrbk5179Damn I was about to say the same thing, FOTW included. I know Dave was whacked on drugs but to just go with he was seeing shit that wasn't there was 😆
Hi Seph. Yes, I agree! For me, it is also, probably, my least favorite live version of the song I've heard. In regard to what you mentioned regarding it: The dramatic choral intro is taken from the "SPLIT MIX" of the song, which itself lasts over 9 1/2-minutes (different but great version, you should check it out!) plus, they do not include an instrumental "break" near the middle like they normally do with the song. For me, probably next to the 101-Live Version, I would recommend "TOUR OF THE UNIVERSE" Live from Barcelona; November 2009. Killer Live Version, my friend! Cheers!
I think you are too much in the 101 version, or the original one. It's really new to you. In my opinion, it's one of the best live version ever with the 101 and world violation tour's. I really thought you would have been impressed but...
I love the song. But dave wasnt at his best in this performance, which was a little odd because up to this point in the concert he was actually sounding amazing. So im not sure what happened :(
@@SephPlays Will be interested to see what you think of the rest of the show (love the play-by-play, by the way!) Perhaps part of it is that he just got weary and worn down as the show went on, as he wasn’t exactly pacing himself during the Devotional era lol.
Damn you're being real harsh on Dave. 😆 He had croak or gasp here and there. Relax.😁 I agree though it's not my fav version. That would be either 101 or One Night In Paris, which you'll eventually get to I guess.
No, he certainly wasn't okay when he was on drugs. He used to talk to puppets, and in 1995 he died. Luckily, they were able to revive him. I'm so glad he's okay now. After he died, he stopped taking the drugs; I think otherwise he wouldn't be with us anymore.
Dave takes in too much when he sings here. He kind of screams as much as he can in the verse, whereupon it sounds very strained. I think that the song "Never let me down again" always works better in the studio version than live - even if the atmosphere is at its best when the audience starts with the traditional waving of the arms. Many people say that Depeche Mode is better live. They are a great live band meant in atmosphere and the always energetic performance. But if you disregard the actual stage performance and just listen to the music, I think that Depeche Mode's songs in the studio version sound better than in the live version. - With a few exceptions.
Dave is no perfectionist...we enjoy the totality of the experience ...live ...if your gonna be nitpicking details ...your gonna be sorely disapointed fron here on out...to each their own I guess but to me this is the best version
@@SephPlays Wouldn't worry about it lol. Don't want to spoil anything, but if you weren't partial to this vocal performance, the tours that followed may be a little disappointing 😂There are going to be many "wrong notes!"
Lifelong DM fan, but Dave has never been a particularly good live singer, at least in terms of keeping on key. Certainly compared to Martin. His voice really began to deteriorate with the Devotional tour (the heroin didn’t help). Singing is breath control and part of the problem is he exerts such energy in the performance he’s almost immediately out of breath, and quickly resorts to shout-singing.
I have never seen him like this. As i said in the video its very very uncharacteristic for him and if i were there i think i would actually be worried for his health at this point >.>
He misses a note because it’s real and no auto tune, he’s also so strung out. You do understand the context don’t you? First time I’ve been disappointed with your reaction videos.
The stopping and starting as well as talking too much over the video is just WAYYY too much for me... INCREDIBLY frustrating...I know that some pausing has to be done in order to play the footage, BUT gosh, as much as I love your passion, I would love it if you chilled out a bit and really took it all in, then give your review after...

I miss a lot the electronic drums here. This is almost the album version with the intro from the Split Mix.
Regardless of what i said in this video it doesnt change the fact that this is still one of my most favourite songs of all time
@@SephPlays Well said. Love your reactions and I had never watched reaction videos until I saw yours. I feel like I'm watching my Depeche Mode fan life, but speeded up so you don't have to wait for a new album or tour!
I think thats the beauty of reactions in general "Seeing someone elses opinions on songs you love" :D
Sexiest drumming ever!
AND THE SURPRISES CONTINUE😮😮😄😄😄
Great to hear you still think it's a banger 😊
No matter what this song will always be in my top songs of all time :D
En esta gira hicieron más de 100 conciertos
You should listen the remixes on singles, this one is close to never let me down - split mix
I felt this was when the drugs kicked in for Dave, which probably led to the voice cracks and him pointing and laughing at something which I’m quite positive was a side effect from the drugs
OMG! Do you think maybe he was seeing things that weren't there? >.>
@@SephPlays most likely considering he’s pointing up to the ceiling and laughing, it’s unlikely that someone would be that high up unless it’s something he’s seeing 😂
I suspect he's pointing up at the audience in the balcony with signs etc, I think we get a better look in Fly on the Windscreen on the bonus songs 🪰🤗🤗
@@SephPlays Maybe he points at the stars which are shining bright. 😄 Martin's lyrics say: "See the stars, they're shining bright..."
@@steviedmrbk5179Damn I was about to say the same thing, FOTW included. I know Dave was whacked on drugs but to just go with he was seeing shit that wasn't there was 😆
Try singing over the intro: "See the stars, they're shining bright, everything's alright tonight".;-) The split mix also starts like that.
Cheers!
I'm really looking forward to the next one :D
Its called "The Split Mix"
Have you seen what happened during In Your Room yet?
No?
Devvotional in Frankfurt, IYR no spoilers but you're in for a bit of a madness on Dave's part, of course. TBC....
And also few months before His death he tried to kill himself.
@@Mimo4cand years later he had cancer.
Dave has been through alot and is still here and rocks. This man is amazing.
@@stormchaserkst4496 yep, I don't want to start ans blasphamous romors but I think that gods got a sick Sense of Humor.
Seph, you know what makes me happy? DM always gets the most views even compared to michael 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
theres no competition here on the channel. But that could be due to how old the Elvis fans and MJ fans are compared to the DM ones haha
Signature tune
Dave takes in too much when he sings here. He kind of screams as much as he can in the verse, whereupon it sounds very strained.
I think that the song "Never let me down again" always works better in the studio version than live - even if the atmosphere is at its best when the audience starts with the traditional waving of the arms.
Many people say that Depeche Mode is better live.
They are a great live band meant in atmosphere and the always energetic performance. But if you disregard the actual stage performance and just listen to the music, I think that Depeche Mode's songs in the studio version sound better than in the live version. - With a few exceptions.
Seph, emotions or heroine... One of those took over ;) Still it is the song about a drug trip :D
The intro is simply the strings/brass from the chorus....
Dave has never sounded better. And the funny thing is he was high AF during this concert
I think thats what made this version not so great to be fair 😅
@@SephPlays you crazy man that was his very best performance ever
@@davidwillis3485 i perfer the live 101 version 😍
@@SephPlaysand that's completely fine!
Dave is no perfectionist...we enjoy the totality of the experience ...live ...if your gonna be nitpicking details ...your gonna be sorely disapointed fron here on out...to each their own I guess but to me this is the best version
Ninnnaaaaaa not you too 😭 why is everyone not hearing and seeing what i saw and heard?
@@SephPlays Wouldn't worry about it lol. Don't want to spoil anything, but if you weren't partial to this vocal performance, the tours that followed may be a little disappointing 😂There are going to be many "wrong notes!"
@@jesseburke2495 😆yep
@@SephPlays chill dude...now Im worried about you...were all gonna get ulcers here 🤣🤣🤣
Fletch is *never* singing anything, his micrrophone is turned off (RIP Fletch). Martin pulled off that chorus all by himself ;)
We're on the same page with this one brother. 101's version is much better.
Seph you try a year and a half of singing 2 hrs a night....you couldn't.....i'm disappointed in you...Dave is human
I have never seen him like this. As i said in the video its very very uncharacteristic for him and if i were there i think i would actually be worried for his health at this point >.>
@@SephPlayschill dude youre gonna give yiurself an ulcer😂
He misses a note because it’s real and no auto tune, he’s also so strung out. You do understand the context don’t you? First time I’ve been disappointed with your reaction videos.
The stopping and starting as well as talking too much over the video is just WAYYY too much for me... INCREDIBLY frustrating...I know that some pausing has to be done in order to play the footage, BUT gosh, as much as I love your passion, I would love it if you chilled out a bit and really took it all in, then give your review after...
I'm definitely not the kind of reactor you are looking for as i do this on every single song i've ever reacted too haha
@@SephPlays Fair enough...It was just a suggestion... As I said, I do love your passion, but yeah, I'm out... Good luck for the future though...
Why in England you always got such a thin voice?
