The joke's way older than Open All Hours, it's in fact over 2000 years old. This is the Ship Of Theseus paradox, which was identified in Ancient Greek times. Their version was about a ship: If you replaced every single piece of a ship, is it still the same ship? And what if you took all the replaced pieces and reassembled them, could they then both be the original ship?
Trigger is so sincere when he says it . Wouldve loved a spin off series involving Trigger but i guess its quality not quantity that makes him a legend !!
I have often refer to only fools and horses sketch as I use the same "logic" when I talk about my PC. My PC in essence is the EXACT same machine it was when I first built it in 1995 ish ... just every single component is different. Anyways thanks for this I never knew it was on open all hours
the human body replaces cells to the point where in 1 or 2 years we are completely different to version of ourselves 2 years prior. But we still consider us the same being.
@@Lord_SkepticI knew this comment would be posted. We replace all our cells roughly every seven years but humans like all mammals are basically biological Triggers Brooms...🤔
Open All Hours didn't do it first either. Plutarch did it first over 1900 years ago: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus The story is also well known in the form of "George Washington's axe" and "Jeannot's knife".
Was the joke "reused" ? Thats the beauty of comedy. I notice "Tony Angelino" from the same comedy programme, to the great "Tony Ferrino" from "Coogan's Run", see ? BOTH BRILLIANT.
John Sullivan always brought up/copied the old used jokes or acts in most of his shows particularly OFAH. Fair play to him, you never thought that they were used!
As stated Trigger's version was still b..b...by far the b..b..best 😉 argh thank you a little OAH tribute, still though, copied it may be but better by far it is (Yoda...argh thank you)😋
DALEKSLAYER1 In the first episode of the last series, the Doctor used the same broom analogy when talking to a self aware robot that keeps replacing parts of its body. I just realized that after watching this video and thought it was funny.

The question formed part of my University philosophy course too.
It is a question which much exercises our heritage steam railways to this very day!
Trigger's saying of it will always be the best and the funniest!!
Triger said it with such belief, sincerity and genuine pride.
*Never worked out why everyone else called Dave, Rodney. Must have been a nickname.*
It was David Jason’s idea
Rodney Jason?
Trigger is so sincere when he says it . Wouldve loved a spin off series involving Trigger but i guess its quality not quantity that makes him a legend !!
triggers version was hilarious played superbly by the late great roger loiyd pack
The joke is MUCH MUCH older than either of these, but probably its inspiration en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus
73skyrat very interesting thanks
actually the ship of Theseus is easily answered and isn't a puzzle in itself.
Open all hours is so funny, never fails to make me laugh. Way before my time by still up to date in humour etc
Best RUclips video of all time!

I'm a fan of both comedys but triggers version was delivered way better than the original joke in open all hours
Never gets old
X TH0M4S X
Neither does the broom.
Either way it's still a good joke :)
It's all about the delivery. Trigger delivered!
Great spot my friend! :)
God bless you.
My broom has had no new handles or heads.
It is a much older joke than that. I remember it from the early 1950s.
David Jason was paying tribute to his mentor Ronnie.

That's just not true.
book.bionumbers.org/how-quickly-do-different-cells-in-the-body-replace-themselves/
It is more like 10 years
@@Lord_SkepticI knew this comment would be posted. We replace all our cells roughly every seven years but humans like all mammals are basically biological Triggers Brooms...🤔
Bones take 10 years
I thought the video was going to reveal that the broom featured in Only Fools and Horses was actually the same broom used in Open All Hours
It is, its just had a new head and handle since.
hilarious. esp looking at Del tryng to figure it out...48 broom heads and 17 handles..:)
Yeah John Sullivan often wrote for Ronnie barker on many things including the 2 Ronnies. So they’re you have it. Hehehe know ya history!
Well done Cali.....Well spotted!
its from the episode Heroes and Villains

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus the first outing of the story
Neither, it's Arkwrights!
very good😊

I first heard this joke in the 1950s so neither Trigger nor Arkwright can claim to be the original source.
I always said that's where John Sullivan got the joke from (Open All Hours) but still funny nevertheless.
Well he showed you a picture of it!
What more proof do you need 😝
No Dave look after your broom
And as long as brooms with replaceable heads have existed this joke probably existed...
Independently coming up with a joke is possible you know.
John Sullivan always brought up/copied the old used jokes or acts in most of his shows particularly OFAH. Fair play to him, you never thought that they were used!
Actually Aristotle invented the joke in the Classical Period of Ancient Greece
I don't get it?
Is it in the Bible", all you crazies???
why would anyone vote it dddd
down.
The down voters needed new heads!
An they need to get a handle
Trigger does it better
haha whoooah
I am just wondering, if Ronnie Barker is "Trigger's" cousin ?. "Trigger's" cousin, Ronnie had a strange taste in women, but they were men.
As stated Trigger's version was still b..b...by far the b..b..best 😉 argh thank you a little OAH tribute, still though, copied it may be but better by far it is (Yoda...argh thank you)😋
Hold on. This means that Doctor Who ripped off Only Fools and Horses which ripped off Open All Hours.
TeknoBoy Where did Doctor Who rip them off?
DALEKSLAYER1 In the first episode of the last series, the Doctor used the same broom analogy when talking to a self aware robot that keeps replacing parts of its body. I just realized that after watching this video and thought it was funny.
Yeah buy open all hrs was not even close as good as only fools and horses!
This is actually a classic paradox, if everything gets replaced on an item is it still the same item.
The Ship of Thesues
What episode is that OFAH scene from?
Heroes and Villains. The Batman episode with Councillor Murray.
