Man, looking at early Egg Rock makes me remember how many levels were horrible narrow corridor mazes, in whole or part, for a long while. I love how they’ve modernized that out!
I find it kind of funny how egg rock hasn’t overhauled since 2.0, in fact, it’s the only stage that hasn’t been overhauled at some point, it’s been the same stage for 15 years, all they’ve done is remove sections.
One time I played the early prototype version on a netgame with 4 people in Demo 2. And it was insane, an enemy screwed with an elevator, tons of people were getting game overs, people were getting messed up by others, and it wasn’t even completable because -a teleporter didn’t work apparently- there was no signpost. It was fun.
I find it *INCREDIBLE* how a game technically started back in 1998, is STILL being worked on to this day! the amount of effort the devs put in to this game is BEYOND commendable. and by the way, thanks for covering this stuff! you do an awesome job.
watching this video made me realize how many gimmicks are shoved into this level, and i find it funny how it got better as more and more sections were removed. really excited for the 2.3 remake (whenever that's gonna come out lol), i'd love to see a version of this level that focuses on a smaller pool of gimmicks to make this level more focused and fair
Fun fact: The reason Egg Rock Zone was and is so difficult is because SSNTails wanted revenge on Mystic for creating Sonic 2Z, a challenging and sometimes unfair rom hack designed for players who'd "had enough of typical sonic level design and wanted something genuinely challenging." (Via SSNTails' RUclips Channel)
Ah, Egg Rock Zone. The only zone that hasn't had an major overhaul in over 10 years, and also the only zone whose changes weren't adding things but removing them to make it easier, and rightfully so. I remember playing online back in the early 2010's and this goddamn level was almost impossible to complete thanks to lag in the Blowing Fans section. This could have been avoided if we just took the left path at the beginning, but the right path was faster and way more fun to suffer lol. Good times. Also I thought the video would start immediately with the 2.0 version, I totally forgot there used to be a prototype one before that. EDIT: Just finished the video, it was really good and nostalgic like all your past videos covering the history of all the stages. However, something that isn't present here is the original version of Black Eggman in 2.0. It lacks the climbable wall that were behind the 4 main pillars, and instead 4 plataforms in the connecting corners were present. The main pillars also had different colors instead of being all red/pink with lava. Was it not worth mentioning since the fight itself wasn't different? Not that I'm complaining but I find it weird that it didn't at least get a simple mention.
"Entirely new melody" While I can't write this off as entirely untrue, I do have to point out that both acts, in their new songs, have leitmotifs to the old Egg Rock music.
I wasn't aware that the later prototype had been given a release! That's an interesting find for sure, seeing the 2.0 trailer ERZ1 in full. It's funny how similar the later prototype and the 2.2 version of ERZ1 are still actually, I'm pretty sure that ERZ1 may as well be the oldest level still in the game with that in mind, having just had tweaks and extensions added on over time rather than being completely remade like so much of the game.
I would argue that GFZ1 is older in that regard, since its level design has not been remade since ~2000, just tweaked and expanded. That said, ERZ1 is still way more similar to its 2009 builds than GFZ1 is to its 2000 builds. :P
I like "New Very-Last-Minute Black Eggman. That's a very amusing name. But yeah, having not remembered what was in the older versions of SRB2, Egg Rock's difficulty definitely threw me for a loop. Those gravity altering segments made me lose quite a few lives, if I recall!
This video feels a lot more polished than the others. Showing some very nice signs of improvement. This was also very interesting as I didn't think egg rock had a very interesting history.
Honestly, it's insane to me how well ERZ still fits in 2.2 despite being so much less modernized than the rest of the zones, it only makes me more excited to see what an actually polished ERZ will look like in 2.3. Always been a fan of the cyber-nightmare aesthetic of most final Sonic zones so I can only dream of what a 2.2 styled ERZ will look like
Right off the bat in the later prototype there's seemingly infinite 1-ups, I wonder if that was there for testing purposes. Anyways, it's amazing to see how this level evolved... and made easier.
@unfloofy Oh yeah i played this when i was young, then a while later when it was all kinda fleshed out a degree, with arid canyon and red volcano not having act 2's yet or a boss, now i played the 2.2 version
Honestly I like some of the ideas from 2.0’s version of eggrock act 2 like the gravity slide portion and the size shrink part. It would’ve made sense if they were added to somewhere like doomship if that ever gets the luxury of being developed.

According to the devs, Red Volcano Act 2 and 3 are for sure what's coming next. Egg Rock remake is being worked on, but it's not coming before Red Volcano. Nothing was said on Dark City and Grand Eggship, but they're still planned to eventually be in the game.
I think ERZ needs a remake because the difficulty spike from RVZ to ERZ is immense However, i do think ERZ is the best level in the game so i am not sure
I'm currently mulling over what to do next. The finale of this series has already been decided on, but I want to do one or two videos before it. I might do something involving Mystic Realm or the secret stages. Maybe DCZ and GEZ, who knows.
@@DylanDude Maybe you should remaster the GFZ, THZ, and DSZ videos.. with the trivia and stuff from the Egg Rock video. And since DSZ is pretty tough, you should do some hilarious outtakes when you were recording DSZ!
Honestly it's kind of a shame that the Egg Rock Robotnik boss was scrapped for Egg Rock Zone, I think it would've been cool for before the final showdown in blackcore, much like the miniboss you fight in Sonic 3 & Knuckles before the Kyodai Egg Robo. It even plays around with mechanics of the level like Lava, lasers and Anti-gravity.
I don't know if I'm the only one who thinks this, but when Dark City eventually does come out, Black Eggman should be moved there so that there's a new final boss, despite the nostalgia factor. It just fits far better.
Actually I think you got the trivia wrong for the erz remake, the erz shown in the trailer was just a revamp much like 2.2 gfz. It ended up being scrapped in favor of the remake which wasn't completed in time for 2.2
I think you should've used music_remade for v2.1. Well, for every zone except THZ and this zone, considering they didn't have remade tracks in the mod. As for the "SRB2 Throughout History" series itself, it was fun going through each version of SRB2 in the past. Will you go back to this series when we get v2.3? I'm not sure GFZ, THZ, or ACZ would get changed that much for v2.3, but the current DSZ2 is for some reason a placeholder, and is planned to get remade. Same with the entirety of ERZ, which was obvious it was a placeholder that was planned to get remade. I also heard that RVZ is the main focus of v2.3 development, similar to how we had to wait until v2.2 for ACZ2 and 3. If the devs at Sonic Team Jr are reading this, I have a suggestion for an eventual new zone. As we all know, 9 zones.are planned, 7 of which are already in the game. But what about a 10th zone that fills an ice theme? That could be perfect for Frozen Hillside Zone by making it a regular level, sticking it in between CEZ and ACZ, and we already have Act 1 as a secret level, and an Act 2 exists from the July/August 2012 OLDC, why not add both of them in? Though a custom boss may have to be created, but it would be "cool" (Pun intended) regardless.

This happened in a patch after the release of 2.2. 2.2.0 only saved at each Act 1 _and_ CEZ2.
