    I am 16. Been playing drums for a bit more than 2 years. I completely understand now when people say "playing with taste is more important than chops." The drummers I love to listen to are Max Sansalone (dimsunk on RUclips), Carter McLean, and Todd Sucherman. I am so glad I chose these guys to get inspiration from. Thank you for the wonderful music you've made Todd

      All great influences. But as a young new player, have you listened to Neil Peart yet? If not you might want to check out these 3 Rush albums. 2112, Permanent Waves, and Moving Pictures. But just keep taking it all in. And if your goal is to be a busy drummer, these gentlemen's styles will help you get their. Steve Smith of Journey, Steve Gadd (I), Jeff Porcaro of Toto, and Simon Phillips (I) are all drummer's you should take the time to check out. They were all influential in my development as a drummer.

      I always tried to just add more chops until I started viewing his show on Drumeo. Todd makes you understand why a guy like Ringo as such a genius. It’s all about playing whats right for every section of every song. Chops are good but timing and taste get the gig.

      On top of a lot already mentioned here (and surely repeating some) - get yourself hip to Buddy Rich - check out Tuff Dude, for example - not for the chops (which are obviously among the very best ever, period) but the fierce swing he has. And then after you have quit your drums in a fit of despair after watching him drum ;) keep drumming. Same goes for Steve Gadd (pick just about anything). And for Vinnie Colaiuta (Chick Corea / Sting just to cover a spectrum). And Jeff Porcaro (Rosanna alone is a Master Class in a shuffle groove). And Charlie Watts because only he could play like that, so simple and sparse yet so perfectly rocking. Last one for now, and I'm leaving so many out just so you'll read this entire reply ;) - The Professor Neil Peart. You'll learn as much from reading or listening to him talk about drumming, music, etc as you will trying to cop his parts. Good luck and have fun :)

    • @williemammoth11
      @williemammoth11 2 года назад

      One more thing too - always dig into the drummers who all the other musicians talk about wanting to play with. You know you're doing something right when other musicians prefer to play with you when they have the opportunity. Jeff Porcaro, Vinnie Colaiuta immediately come to mind, as just two examples of many first-call players.

    I've been watching videos of Todd for almost a year now and must confess that his style is flawless. I'm a drummer with 55 years experience and have studied all the masters. My favorites are mostly of the rock genre such as John Bonham, Bill Bruford, Carl Palmer, Mike Portnoy, Ginger Baker, and many others. But Todd has a really comfortable delivery of his intensions. It's called work smarter not harder. Utililizes the the hi hat very well so it doesn't stagnate. Fills timed out perfectly in a mathematical sense. Cymbal hits though hectic, never miss the mark and are tastfull. Very unique placement of the 3 floor toms but then, how does one stack his floor toms? And a tympani tom? What?? Love that, and he uses it. But anyway, to summerize.... very technical while simplified, lightning fast double kick, flawless meter, and shells (Pearl Masters Series) tuned perfectly. Really a player to study if you want to pick up some licks to add to yer own playing. And Todd, love the drum cam!

    Imo, no one can compare to Todd, the solid rock 2/4 sensibilities, the off metered prog rock influences, the melodic accents in the bridge, are just a few of the details of this master. Few, if none, can replicate his passion, technique and his dedication.

    Hey T!!! So many "Proggy" (please Todd, don't take the "Proggy" part personally, it is after all a really good job title!!👍🏼🤘🏼!!!) music drummers have huge drum sets, even incorporating E-drums straightforward or via triggers within their sets! I have certainly seen my share of them!! HOWEVER, very few of them actually put stick to drum on all those pieces!! But watching Todd for the last dozen or so years, I have noticed that he really doesn't have or muck with extras for the "looks," but rather has the "tools" necessary to execute the task or job at hand!! I applaud that, matter of fact, he has also through his "Drumeo" online classes taught or re-taught me forgotten techniques as well as causing me to eliminate all the unnecessary clutter on my set!! I guess I had forgotten about the one method I was taught by my father, my drum teachers and lived by for many years before being "carried away" with too much stuff!! That is the K.I. S.S. method or school of thought on drumming... and that is...
    K.eep I.t S.imple S.tupid!! If you're going to have "101 drumations" that is your set... you damn well better be using every one of them!!!!
    ANYWAY, KEEP ON KEEPING ON BROTHER DRUMMER!!!!!!!!!!
    PEACE!!!!!!!!!! 🤘🏼

    I’m curious to know Todd, do you look at sheet music for the piece and sort of map out a drum script for the piece, or do you just listen to the other instruments and try several things with different sections of the song until you are happy with the perfection you usually end up with? What’s your basic strategy for composing?
