Visiting France's "Most Dangerous City"...

  • We booked tickets to Marseille only to discover afterwards it's poor reputation for crime and safety. This made us incredibly nervous and the more we researched the more bad we found. After hours of research, I was nearly dreading our trip, but like anywhere we go, we wanted to give Marseille a chance and treat it with caution.
    We left Marseille feeling fulfilled, inspired, and sad to go so soon. Going in with such low expectations left us feeling quite appreciative of everything there is to see. The city is old with modern and impressively progressive features and overall the city is a multicultural hub. To us, the city was flowing with art, creativity, and music. People were fashionably dressed, expressive, and incredibly kind to us (even though we don’t speak a word of French).
    It’s always important for us to go into places with an open mind, ready to form our own opinions apart from those on the internet. Like any city Marseille has its bad areas, but we are so grateful these didn’t deter us from experiencing everything she has to offer.
    Howdy! We're Jenna & Andrew and we create travel vlogs. With this channel we hope to do more than just the typical bucket list. We set out to better understand the culture, language, and most importantly the people of the places we travel to. Our channel is designed to give a unique perspective and knowledge of each country, and our honest and true experience.

    Odd title when I visited in 2007 everyone was very polite and friendly. Almost everyone spoke some English if not fluent in English. The old city was beautiful, and the newer side of the city was extremely charming. Next time I go back to Europe I will definitely be visiting Marseille. I also visited during Carnival, which is their summer celebration, and supposedly the most dangerous time to visit. Marseille reminds me of my hometown of San Antonio Texas.

    The only concept I had of Marseille was from Count of Monte Cristo, of which I’m a massive fan. To no surprise the city had changed this then but I LOVED it! It helps that I had zero clue about its shady reputation. Best parts were riding scooters through Le Painer, eating dinner at the Old Port, and cliff jumping near Calanque. Calanque happened to be closed that day bc of forest fires or something like that so we made the most of the trek we made out and just jumped in and swam around right across from Il Maire. It was beautiful!

    Marseille is know for its dangerous places like ghettos and hoods but they are not in the center of Marseille. In the center you will almost everytime feel fully comfortable and safe. The dangerours parts are when you leave the center and go to some places that looks poor. Yeah then I would pay attention at all cost.

    • @anglaismoyen
      @anglaismoyen 11 месяцев назад

      This is untrue. Many of the poorest and dirtiest neighbourhoods are right in the centre. There are people sleeping on mattresses outside of St Charles Station. People on drink and drugs will approach you and rant at you even in the tourist spots. In one afternoon I even saw violence. Don't try to sugarcoat it. It's a scandal.

    Your video left me feeling a bit sad. The way you depict Marseille is unfair. This city is full of contrasts and is a real melting pot. Did you travel to the Calanques? Did you visit Le MUCEM and Les Terraces du Port? Le Vieux Port maybe? Le Roucas Blanc? La plage du Prado et La Corniche Kennedy? Now, I am not sure how long you stayed and what was your budget like but Le Palais Longchamp?? Seriously??? How did you end there? That part was actually funny. Now, I give it to you, some areas in Marseille are to scratch off the map and keep away from. I also refer to it as a dangerous city because it is. I was born and raised there, know it like the back of my hand, and won't recommend it to anyone looking for a smooth vacation. I also lived in NYC, Brooklyn for many years and it felt so much safer than Marseille. That said, you cannot take the beauty out of it and should not describe it in such ways after having seen so little of it. It's unfair.

    Marseille is a city bustling with anxiety.After visiting so many cities across Europe, I have never experienced such impatient citizens. Everybody seemed to be in a rush in this city which is famous for probably nothing except for garlic- and saffron-flavoured fish stew called bouillabaisse. A city which predominantly is the second largest city and the oldest city in France and also boasts a port has nothing to offer to its tourists except cat calls, union strikes, poor uber facilities, lack of civic sense and very poor infrastructural facilities. When I planned to visit this city in-spite of so many mixed reviews, I always thought that this city will have something to offer to its visitors, but alas my worst nightmare has come true. As I gasp for some freshness in this city, I am only welcomed by a nagging sense of insecurity and fear of harm. This city, in a nutshell, is not at all tourist-friendly and a city to be left alone on its own. The local residents are happy among their own as they show no intention to welcome dreamy-eyed traveler who wants to explore the hidden beauty of Marseille.

      Marseille hosts 8 millions tourists each year, not bad for a city that should be left on its own.
      You just didn’t take the time to learn anything about the city.
