This is why I love the Genki textbooks. They teach the はい forms from the beginning. Every chapter explains examples where common spoken forms are different than formal forms.

I study japanese here in Brazil, but since the pandemic started, I had to stop going to the lessons and start studying alone for a while. Your channel is one of my favorites, and I use to watch your lessons, they help me so much!
Your way of teaching is very easy to understand, your examples are also very good (I miss good examples in textbooks!) and you are a lovely person.

I noticed minna no Nihongo doesn't teach verbs til chapter 20. Most textbooks don't teach real life Japanese. Teachers follow the textbooks & it's slow.

@Miku Real Japanese Thank you again for the informative video. On the Duolingo comment threads, they say that you still use the ません form for formal work situations and stuff like that. Is this true?
How common is this? I'm asking because I work in a Japanese themed restaurant. I had some Japanese customiers the other day. I asked if they wanted anything else. Don't know why I was speaking english in the first place but one of them responded 要りません。
いらないです/いりません means "I don't want it." It's a way of saying "No thank you."
I'm not a specialist but, as far as I know, restaurant is general a more formal place to japanese people, so, they will use formal forms. Here, she's referring to daily life, in special, if we talking about it Kansai people. (Sorry if there's any mistakes, English is not my first language).

I wonder why so often みんなの日本語 is used as example in the thumbnail. I learned with that book and u also have ない形 then and well the difference between casual talk and formal talk. So i don't really agree that the textbook didn't teach it.

「なければなりません」はみんなきらいですかね。確か「ないといけません」はみんなの日本語の例文にひとつだけあったと思いますが、使い方は教えないですね。それよりも「ないです」を先生相手でもよく使ってしまいますが、大丈夫ですか。外人だからやさしくされていると思いますけど。。。
