  • Buying Shinkansen Tickets in Japanese 🚅 Nagoya to Tokyo Round Trip
Watch this video to learn how to buy shinkansen tickets, and things to know about Shinkansen. You can see how to purchase the ticket at the counter and from the ticket machine called 券売機 (けんばいき - kenbaiki). I took a trip to Tokyo from Nagoya and filmed the round trip by Shinkansen. I made a mistake when getting to my seat on the way to Tokyo, so you can learn from my mistake 😅
    This video will focus on...
✅ Purchasing Shinkansen ticket in Japanese
✅ Tips for when using Shinakansen
    ✅ Natural Japanese conversation

I remember buying train tickets in Italy and you'd have these people hanging around trying the scam you "by helping you out" even when I was with a local. It made the whole ticket purchasing on a machine very annoying. But this looks waaaaay better :D Thank you for showing us how to to purchase a ticket two different ways 😊

Go through those gates at Nagoya station a lot! So fun to see someone else do it in a video.
Lucky the unreserved cars where quiet, could have been a long walk to the other end. I sometimes jump an earlier train if unreserved is quiet on it.
Great guide for those wanting to book. Is very handy the machines do other languages.

I actually gave up trying to reserve seats on the Tokaido Shinkansen. Being a foreigner with the JR pass, we can only take Kodama or Hikari trains. The reserved cars were always full but I found there were almost always seats in the non reserved cars, especially car 1 since its so far to walk. Being a tourist its also handy to be able to just hop on/hop off. I do have a nice collection of reserved seat tickets from more obscure places in Japan haha
Also for your viewers, you can select english as the language. The ticket machines can also be used with JR pass as well in recent years.

That's so nice! Hope you have a safe trip. I'll be in Japan again this mid-late December. The first time I've been in Japan, I was confused too until I finally got a Suica card to easily pay for all of my train tickets using the ticket machine instead. The most embarrassing part was when I sat on the wrong seat number on my way to the airport during my last day in Japan. A couple approached me asking for where the seat number was. I was totally confident until we both compared ticket numbers and we were laughing about it. I'm so glad that couple were kind enough to understand. 🤣 Anyways, take care always! 💗💗💗💗💗Yep, that's an F1 Redbull Racing Car powered by Honda. ^^

This is one of the best detailed videos showing us how to buy the ticket from the machine. The english subtitles were most helpful for us non japanese to understand. I have always wondered how to select the station where we are actually boarding if it is not the departure station for the Shinkansen. So you showed that yours was Shinjuku and that selection was towards the end of the purchase process.
My question is what happens if we want to alight from the Shinkansen station and transfer to a local line to the final destination. Eg. Tokyo - Sendai to Matsushimakaigan. The shinkansen stops at Sendai and we need to transfer to Matsushimakaigan but there is no option on the machine to say where is our final destination. If anyone can help, it will be most appreciated.

Loved your video and shorts Sayaka-san. it helps me a lot when i was in Japan last 2 weeks. Just to share, i took the shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo and got Shinkansen tickets online via Klook, the ticket can only be redeem via Kiosk and counter personal will only say "these ticket are not issued here". 2 tickets was provided to me and i need both tickets to reach the platform. basically i have to go thru 2 ticket gates. which was rather confusing as somehow my Entry gate is not the Shinkansen entry gate next to the shinkansen ticket counter but another entry gate that lead to Shinkansen gate. have to ask conductor few times with limited Japanese ending up with Masugu, Migi and Hidari to guide the way. Next plan is to take up Japanese classes

I admit I only turned on subtitles when you talked of jr pass as I plan on visiting japan next fall and planning on getting jr pass just because I figured 1st day with jet lag and not knowing what doing why not just travel the shinkansen to random places
But yes after almost 5 months of learning Japanese I am starting to experiment without subtitles and while I can pick out 30% to 70% of words I like to look at movie the last samurai with tom cruise character having a below average basic conversational level after 6 months in captivity I think it is very possible to learn by watching anime and combining duolingo

さやかさん ありがとうございました。I was suprised that you were surprised to see a completely normal racing car ;) Isn't Formula 1 (F1) racing a thing in Japan? I thought I heard that Nagoya had a famous racing track, but I might be mistaken.
Anyway, great video, especially the mix of real life spoken Japanese in every day situations with Japanese caption and the option of English caption makes it really fantastic for a first year Japanese language learner like myself. Please continue this format!
Also, the German train company could learn soooo much from Japanese train ride experience, not only regarding punctuality but especially as far as ease of ticket purchase and customer service are concerned.

I was there 8 days ago, bought a ticket and took the 6:40 train to Shinagawa 😂 I always try my best to be there at least 40 mins before my train arrives (with all my stuff and done with omiyage hunting) to make sure I’m in the right spot and avoid those embarrassing situations 😆
Although on my way to Nagoya from Kyoto, I initially thought of shipping my luggage so I don’t travel with it but changed my mind.. and when I bought the ticket, I didn’t realise I need to reserve an oversized luggage seat 😢 I was already in the queue waiting for my train when I read about it. So I ended up not seating in my reserved seat and just standing in between cars with my stuff.. good thing Kyoto - Nagoya is just 1 station but 40mins travel time 😅
So I made sure I didn’t make the same mistake travelling from Nagoya to Shinagawa which is a 1.5 hr ride 😁
