Even though this is a lesser-known character form the Marvel comics, this has the potential to be the most fun, hilarious, and meta-MCU show ever made. And we have an idea for this show that could make it totally break new ground for the MCU.
So in this video I’m going to go over his comic book origin, how I think that’s going to be adapted into the MCU, and how it will tie into Black Panther, the Scarlet Witch.Young Avengers-and why this show will be marvel’s answer to the Boys. [the Boys dawn of seven clip]
First I have to mention that Wonder man-aka Simon williams-almost appeared in the MCU already.
Doug: Oh, where?
In Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, when the expansion is happening in Peter’s home town, this movie theater originally featured close ups of simon williams movie posters the posters featured James Gunn’s friend Nathan Fillon as Simon williams. Which, by the way, would have been great casting.
But now, we get Superman himself, Henry Cavill, as Simon, and this is perfect. It’s a real coup for disney too, like when the Yankees signed johnny damon from the red sox.
Doug: Okay, but that’s enough sportsball.
Right you are. Simon williams. So in the comics, he grew up as kind of a 98-pound bookworm, but in a wealthy family. His dad owned a company called Williams Innovations, and Simon took control when he died. But Simon was a bad businessman, and he coulkdn;t compete with his main competition-stark industries. So he grew to hate Tony stark.
Sinon had a brother named Eric Williams, who convinced his brother to embezzle money and invest it with the mafia. Simon is caught, goes to jail, and blames Tony Stark for the whole thing.
Doug: Why did he blame tony? OIt’s not Tony's fault he embezzled money.
Cause tony was much better at business than him-but mostly sinon just wanted to blame some else for his own failures, this is where we start to see what makes this chacrete great. Simon Williams has very low self esteem. In the comics he kept quitting the avengers because he didn;lt thin that he was worthy to be on their roster. Probably all stems from him being a geek.
Doug: one of us…one of us.
Right, so Simon is in jail, and then an asgardian sorceress called the enchantress and baron zemo break him out, cause they’re like, “we hate tony stark too.” And Zemo does this experiment on him that makes him into an endless source of ionic energy. He gets super strength, invulnerable skin, and his eyes glow red. So zemo gives simon the name wonder man, and created the first of many ugly costumes for him. Winder then joins the avengers so he can turn on them, then has a change of heart, and joins the team against zemo.
However, the powers zemo gave Simon are also killing him, and with ]out an antidote, he dies. The avengers mourn this hero, and sinon stays dead for a little while.
Side note-while he’s dead, Hank Pym scans his brain waves so they can maybe restore his brain one day. Later, when Ultron creates the vision, he uses simons’ brain waves as a template. So in a way, Vision and Wonder Man are brothers-and they both have the hots for wanda. - Кино

Keep up the good work as always ryan
Can you use Tiege Hanley on a black geek's face?
I love wonder man why did he get switched to a black man lol
Getting to the point where we're going to need a scorecard to keep track of the literally dozens of characters they're throwing at us right now.
I mean. It's comics.
wait till this guy figures out their are million’s of comic book characters
This is true it is marvel comics lol
If memory serves, when Disney acquired Marvel, they purchased the rights to 4,500+ characters. Sir, you will not require a scorecard but rather a spreadsheet. 🙂
I am just waiting for the real Johnnie blaze and Punisher to get adapted.
Hoping they bring Daniel Brühl as Zemo back, at least as a quick cameo in the origin or some !
I want a Tony Stark biopic done as though it was made in the MCU…
SAME!
Was there a Tony Stark doc among the films on the plane in Far From Home? Can't remember. Think so.
Williams could have been one of the S.W.O.R.D. scientists working with Vision's corpse before Wanda steals it back. White Vision could possibly have part of his brain in addition to the parts of Tony and Bruce the O.G. villain had.
I have no problem with that variation
I love wonder man he's like Johnny cage with Godlike ability almost on thor's level.
Isn't Johnny cage from mortal kombat? Or were you referring to Luke cage? 🤔
Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat that is an actor in that series like Wonder Man is in Marvel.
@@doblephilo1tv45 Johnny Cage's look and personality are both very, VERY Simon Williams/Wonder Man.
Now he is like JAX
@@DCL4793 but with an entirely ionic body instead of cyborg arms.
Nathan Fillian voiced Wonder Man in the M.O.D.O.K show also, Episode 7 I believe
I ALWAYS loved the red safari jacket. No one else had anything even close to that. Not skin tight, macho, and even a turtle-neck!
Yeah, one of my favourite costumes as well. Hope it makes an appearance.
Agreed. I always felt like it reflected his early discomfort with being thrust into the role of superhero
I honestly really liked HBO's Watchmen and Black Manta in the aquaman movie so I'm looking foreward to Yahya coming into the MCU
Before I watched Watchmen I said to myself, "How in the world are they going to continue the story?" And then I watched the show. I give it a 9.5 out of 10. My only complaint was the length of time a certain person stayed in office.
Watchman was lighting in a bottle tight show. The best continuation of a story/ legacy that I can recall.
Agreed. Watchmen might just warrant a rewatch soon!
I gave up on Watchmen about four episodes in. I know the original story had its share of unlikeable characters by design, but the fact this didn't have a single character I felt compelled to watch or that I desired to see succeed just killed it for me. I think I actually watched the beginning of the next episode just to see if Rorschach 2.0 killed all the dudes that went to his house or was really dead, but when they just moved on, I did, too.
@@steveking1037 you mean Looking Glass? Yeah, he was a highlight at the end. I too was expecting another Rorschach wannabe but then we got his backstory and after the home attack, found out he is very much different from Rorshy. Reaaaally wanted him to succeed in the end. And since I guess you'll won't be watching the rest, he does.
I just gotta say, RDJ was born to play Tony stark. It's funny because now when I see Iron Man in comics, animated series etc, I think of RDJ, he is Iron Man to me now.
Whatever happens with the WONDERMAN story, it should try to avoid the kitchy one liners of SHE-HULK and instead tap in the deep psychological characteristics of a super hero's dark side of having low self esteem "as a defect" but not the final result.
We need a Marvel Reality Show! So good
Get the West Coast Avengers started. Give me Tigra, the Ant Fam (depending on the movie ending), War Machine etc. This would be the perfect show for celebrity cameos like Matt Damon and others.
season 2 of hawkeye, with kate over on the west coast and clint doing clint stuff in new york, like in the matt fraction run, could also be really fun. clint and kate could even serve as the bridge between the two groups, leading towards some kind of national/global threat leading to mega team-up
War Machine has been sorely underutilized. He’s virtually inconsequential in the MCU. But yeah next to the Young Avengers I’d definitely love to see the West Coast Avengers.
@@michaelharris7157 Armor wars a coming, and War Machine has the lead. Hope they dont fcuk this up
Yahya is a dope actor. Can’t wait for him to take on this role.
So tokenism is ok then?
@@fukyofeelings4234 cry
@@fukyofeelings4234 Nothing tokenistic about it. There, I made up a new word for you.
@@testfire3000 but your ok with race swapped hand me down characters when there are great already established black characters that marvel has? Tho just like symbolic gestures and pats on the head don't you?
It should start by showing he failed the audition for the Avengers play we saw just to foreshadow his eventual actual involvement
That would be dope!
Hahaha, his rejection for Rogers the Musical. That would be great!
Wait, the safari jacket costume was ahead of its time. Look at those pockets. Would have been awesome in the 90s with all their belts and pouches
They need to bring Evan Peters as Ralph in this.
He's rumored
Uuuum NO! Ralph Boner was 💩.
You killed me with "mayonnaise vision" 🤣🤣🤣
Preaching about the great story of Wonderman in the comics and how excited you are about him being in the MCU. This is just how I talked when I was so excited to hear the news the Disney bought Star Wars... before Disney actually released a Star Wars movie and before I realized the atrocity that was just created. Boy was I in for a shock. You should be worried, not excited, in the words of Marlon Brando, "look how they massacred my boy"
I think Disney+ has done pretty well with their take on Marvel characters in the different series so far. Overall. More hits than misses, let me say that.
@@testfire3000 HAHAHAHAHA!!! All those shows suck!!!!
@@thanosdoomjuggernaut2846 Some of them weren't the greatest, I'll agree. But WandaVision and Moon Knight were both pretty good, IMO.
@@testfire3000 WandaVision was OK, but everything else stunk. The M-She-U is over with. And they destroyed the Comic-book industry.
Ryan, about Wonderman being an answer to The Boys, I'm not sure about this. The Boys does not criticize Marvel itself, but Disney while the Marvel movies have a good billionaire, which we know does not exist in real life, against all the evil in the world according to them, just think about it, everything started with Tony Stark also in this Marvel Meta Universe there is no corporation controlling the heroes like Vought, only bad governments and any anti-neoliberal agenda. The Boy's critique is against how late capitalism is using the idea of superheroes and the consequences in real life. If this is a response, and could be, I think it will be maybe be fun to watch but it could be very childish response if not suck completely, because Marvel will never show capitalism as evil, what they like to present is a very ideological image of reality where there is bad capitalism and good capitalism like Tony Stark. All these shows like The Boy, DC, or Marvel are Capitalist Realism at its best, as Mark Fisher describes in his book, which I super recommend checking out.
I’m from the thought of “if you play a hero/ Super villain and one property you should not be allowed to play a superhero or super villain and another property. Like spread it around and give other people a chance to do the job. And then again if that were a thing then we wouldn’t have Chris Evans as captain America. Looks like I answered my own question
Yeah so calm down before I
Evans is the exception to the rule
@@SIFUSAYSRELAX yeah, I agree.
@@ragewayz900 what?
@@tompatchak8706 put some dirt in your eye😈
I think Wonder Man could possibly play a role in Wanda’s redemption with the Children’s Crusade. I hope to see her as a big bad someday tho.
I’d like to see her meet Magneto & become an X-Men villain or end up in Hell, become a disciple to Mephisto, & facing off with the Midnight Sons. I could see White Vision doing his own thing.
With them bringing back dead characters from Infinity War, I expect them all to go on different arcs. I also think Gamora & Star-Lord’s relationship won’t work out in Vol. 3 because of the lost history & she’ll move on to Nova like in the comics.
I think Wonderman would be a great addition to any show. So much potential.
5:01 I think that's one of the coolest superhero costumes there is
The Grim Ripper also appeared as a cameo in Episode 2 of WandaVision.
Yeah, I am surprised he didn't mention that.
I just wanna see Wonder Man team up with Beast!!!!!
Yes
Dude I lost it when you said "Mayonnaise Vision" and just kept going. 🤣🤣🤣
I was watching this whole video with a skeptical eye, Ryan - but you didn’t get me to buy in until you mentioned a Simon Williams reality show framework. Damn.
She-Hulk was already quite meta, especially to LA, I'm not sure doing a second show that covers similar ground is a good idea.
Well, She-Hulk was fourth wall breaking meta. This is just a different type of show. Think about how WandaVison, Moon Knight and She-Hulk were all such different TYPES of shows from the MCU or other Disney+ series like Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
i like the high five he did where you didnt have to hold his paw,
Wooaah, I knew about the cut poster for Simon Williams in Guardians 2. Didn't know it was him playing Arkon?! No mention of that Screencrush?! I love Arkon, kinda like Marvel's alien version of Conan.
2015 Secret Wars: Weirdworld (feat. Arkon) is my favorite tie in. Underated Masterpiece.. god I hope we get Weirdworld in the MCU for Secret Wars... Special Presentation maybe???
Super disappointed this isn't going to be Nathan Fillion as has been rumored for like ten years. They even had movie posters in some of the shows with Simon Williams filming a Tony Stark biographical film, and Fillion was going to do the posters...
Mateen has been a handful of other characters, hasn't he? Aside from Black Manta, I mean... I swore he had a minor part in a couple other Marvel films.
But Nathan Fillion is a white straight male, thats not allowed by Disney.
As always, I enjoy hearing your perspective and the depths to which you go to justify it.
Biggest Question: Will Beast from X-Men be part of the show?
Who knows when any X-Men will arrive? She Hulk flat out asked the question in her finale and they evaded the answer.
It would be cool if Yahya Abdul Mateen II plays a stunt double for Nathan Fillion but somehow gets powers, that'd be an interesting turn of events
fascinating twist idea!
Your amazing Ryan's keep up the good works.
Great Video per usual!
Wasn't Sam Raimi's Spider-Man based in "real" New York and Christopher Reeves Superman in "fanciful" Metropolis?
The reality show idea is brilliant
Keep it up I love your show!
Have we just given up trying to find actors that look like their comic book character? I guess you can put anyone in the suit, but it loses the nostalgia factor. In this instance, Ron Funches would have been my first choice
I hear you and feel you. The only problem with that is back then...comics were very very White. Due to the racism of the past, other groups weren't really represented even though they made up a very large and loyal fan base. Think of this as a correction of the many mistakes that were made in the past. Debts have to paid.
@@Preach2reach So, let's say you're black and you grew up a Batman super fan. Do you want to watch a Batman movie with a gay Asian trans man playing the Batman?

Naaah his face is too long & slim for Simon's
Stale jokes and winking at the camera.
They should rotate one week Wonderman, one week Visionquest.
This will suck too. Damn, WM was one of my favorite characters. Another one bites the dust. How do they explain his background, his brother??
“Mayonnaise Vision” 🤣

I cannot tell you how much/long I've been waiting for Wonder Man
Hey ScreenCrush, you have proved your apperance improvement. The bags under eyes, which I noticed before, arent there now. Good work.
One of the most convoluted origin stories ever.
Amazing idea! I really hope you're right about the direction of the Wonder Man series! That sounds fun as hell to watch.
Also, I really enjoyed the section of the video that broke down the different meanings of 'real' when it comes to analyzing media. I've had similar feelings but never known how to put them into words that well! And it's going to be an important distinction as they continue to add on meta layers to the MCU, which I'm so excited to see them doing more and more of considering "meta" itself is usually pretty important when dealing with multiverse stories.
That would be very fun. I have been kind of annoyed at all the brief paragraph descriptions of Simon all day which are so boring and just well, Loki. But Simon is funny, he's sad sure, but he desperately wants to be respected and loved. Honestly, every time I read about him the show I actually keep thinking he's a part of is Doom Patrol as he and Rita would either get along famously or be catty bitches to each other. But a reality show would be fun and one that pops in surprise housemates or contestants would be fun.
Mayonnaise Vision!!!? 😂🤣😂🤣 Nice one!!!
You're probably not getting a lot of feedback about this yet, but I really like the new lighting, Ryan. Looks like you guys upped the aperture, too? @screenscrush
Right as I was thinking he was looking a little rough the dog says he looks great lol
I still have that Avengers issue with Letterman. Bring back Assistant Editors Month!
I have high hopes for the show....growing up, Wonder Man was pretty much my favorite Marvel character with a fascinating character arc. Initially desperate for success, he gradually became accustomed to his powers and attendant responsibilities, and ultimately turned to acting partly as an attempt to feel more comfortable in the role of superhero. After achieving some success, for a while he became overconfident, but eventually matured into a capable hero and actor. He's had romantic involvements with both the Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel, and a close friendship with the Beast (of the x-men) and it would be great to see those included.
Just two more roles and he'll tie Chris Evans... Though I'm kind of disappointed we probably won't get a bigger role for Manta.
It would be nice if neither studio tied him to any exclusive contract. I think those are getting harder to enforce these days anyway. Just hoping.
For the first time, the illusion was busted and Ive always thought the movies behind him were really there. They are printed on a screen.
How could you do this to me?
@@ThePack812 I also feel cheated. He messed up the lighting. There are shadows where there shouldn't be shadows and now I know.
I am also excited about Wonder-Man but I can't see the potential chemistry between Wanda and Wonder-Man. I don't think Elizabeth Olsen and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II can be a good pair. Whereas I just want to see Wanda and Vision together no one else. Personally, my dream Wonder-Man casting is Henry Cavill. And I was so excited when he was even rumoured to play the role, but Superman news came crushing all that.

Wonder Man also sees Emil on a regular basis to overcome his constant need for validation.
And of course Trevor Slattery is his agent.
😁LoL the *Wonder Man* series practically writes itself.
A lot of times when he says "I think they'll do this or that" in predicting what might happen in a show or a movie, he says it like he came up with it on his own. as if the information wasn't already out there. If he told everyone the source of the information it won't take away from the fact that he's well researched.
Would LOVE to see the 616 meeting their MCU (19999) counterparts.
Imagine they saying, do every superhero in this universe tell jokes? LOL
Damn …this was really good. You should get paid for that idea 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Wow wonder man is so complex, good stuff
I had a similar thought about the Fantastic Four being filmed as a reality show. No Origin just introduce them in said show.
As far as the show goes, ... they can try out whichever type of different format they want, they just need to execute it well. ... They're not exactly batting a thousand with it, but hopefully they're learning as they go & all the future MCU shows find better quality consistency 🤞.
They've been ruining Marvel characters for years. I think I'm done
@@davidlutz2242 LoL, I hear you. ... Definitely have been some clunkers as of late & this particular upload tries to make it seem like She-Hulk was good & WonderMan should somehow be like it. ... Which is aggravating. ... First couple & last couple episodes were good enough, but the middle had unwatchable episodes making the series subpar as a whole.
Anyways, ... I for one am holding hope that Fiege learns from the ratings & the majority of fan reactions & tighten things back up.
After all, this has been a new venture for them regarding the TV shows. ... Combined with introducing new type characters that are supposed to replaced the successful ones they just had. ... Lotta understandable factors involved.
... I'll be right in the same boat with yourself if these next ones don't improve though.
🤞
Idk, most of the shows are consistent with their comic counterparts. She hulk isn’t for me but it’s very consistent with the comics. Same with Ms Marvel. I’m 57 , and a show about a teenage Muslim girl wasn’t targeted at me, but again, it was very consistent with the comics. And I did actually enjoy the cultural aspect of that show. I think what they are really trying to do is shake up their format so things don’t get stale with these series, move the whole phase forward a little with each one, and stick to their tried and true formulas with the movies. I also think that the 2 year Covid situation wrought havoc on their production, and they scrambled to cobble them together because they didn’t come out in the right order. I didn’t enjoy WandaVision, but Wanda and Vision are my least favorite MCU characters. I think that they are targeting many of the tv shows at a much smaller demographic. Same for Wonder Man. Most MCU fans have never heard of him, yet he’s getting a show. And, I’ll watch it to keep in the loop. Just like I have the rest of them.
@@richarddoig1865 I feel much the same, although the matching with the comics aspect doesn't bother me much.. ... It's just the exicusion/quality of the shows themselves.
Regardless of pretty much anything else - If they're done well, I'll like em. ... I also watch with a sense of the demographic they're aiming for.
...
I think with the pandemic, they should have taken a money hit or whatever consequences, and not have released Falcon & The WS. ... Major characters that should have been handled better than a disjointed mess of a show. ... The end part of Hawkeye felt off/disjointed as well. .... That's the stuff that can't happen. IMO.
But, as I stated before - I do understand the "why" & am having patience. .... I'm 44 & have seen enough in life to not freak out & still watch along as well. ... Tis merely light entertainment & nothing more.
They know what they're doing & believe they'll right the ship.
...
Also, I really liked WandaVision. ... Minus not tying up the Señor Scratchy stuff.
For whatever it's worth, my list for TV shows is ...
1) Loki
2) WandaVision
3) Moonlight
4) What If?
& a distant # 5 = Hawkeye
6) Kamala.... Good enough teen based show.
From there on, nothing worth typing on. IMO of course.

Nathan Fillion would have been good as Simon Williams/Wonder Man. Maybe if they ever recast T'Challa Udaku/Black Panther they can get Nathan Fillion to play him. Fillion has that type of arrogance to play a Hollywood actor or a King.
He would be 75 years old when he was done with the role.

a superhero reality show is what kicked off civil war in the comics. Ryan, you let me down… love the channel jk
it wasnt really so much of a reality show but more like self-filmed thing like jackass etc. in the print civil war;
they were filming themselves, just doing superhero stuff, to get more famous. not really a big proper national reality show, just a bunch of teens screwing around with a video camera

All these comparisons to She-Hulk you're going to tick off 1/3 of the fans
7:02-10:35 the Marvel Cinematic Universe falls in the realm of Magical Realism. That is basically is when the fantastical elements is normal to everyday grounded life.
It could also be a series about Wondermen who plays himself in a TV series, expanding what She Hulk "started". Then real villains are casted and we have some "real" fights, e.g with the Masters of Evil, while the producer is Zemo himself and Simon is unconsciously involved into some nefarious plan for world domination...is a good way to show some "low" level Avengers villains and not only super mega world threats, This could also make the Wreckin crew or Titania return as "actors" and show some classic fight, It would be great if the a certain Hank McCoy could be mentioned as a specialist in mutations...
Don't lie now wonderman is not lesser known he's very popular in comics because his deaths are always iconic 💀
I can't wait fir an Asian John Shaft or a white Blade.
