@@Kaenargh I do actually liked the change in both DKCR and DKCTF. Instead of going the Zelda way of having almost the same baddie in every main game they went for something cool and original. Besides, if they make the Kremlings return for a future game that would maximize the nostalgia.
The biggest issue I have with the new Donkey Kong Country games is the tone-it feels too light. The original had a sense of underlying menace, with enemies that genuinely felt like a threat. In contrast, the newer games treat enemies more like obstacles to be quickly stomped on in a way that's satisfying for speedrunners, but it loses that sense of danger and tension. I really miss that darker, more challenging atmosphere.

@@powersurge_beastquality rereleases of older games instead of cheap bare-bones ports. In the Switch era, Nintendo hasn’t really done too many good rereleases. Look at Mario All Stars for SNES vs 3d All Stars for Switch. There was so much care and love put into the original All Stars, it wasnt just a port of the old games, it was a graphical overhaul making everything look better than it did on the NES, but in 3d All Stars Nintendo just slapped the three games together plus their soundtracks and sold it (limited time only) for $60.
Glad to hear that your channel is going well. Good luck with everything. I played the country games for the first time when I was a lot older than most, in my 20s. I had always been a DK64 fan and felt that they seemed not as cool. Boy was I wrong and I'm so glad I played them. While DKC2 will always be so special to me, DKCR is one of my favorites for many reasons, to the point where it is probably in my top 3, after Tropical Freeze. An element you didn't mention that was new was the co-op. Yes the old games had it, but the simultaneous player control made it so much fun for me to share with my younger sister and my wife. They both loved playing it with me and I think it is one of the game's strongest parts. Tropical Freeze perfected the co-op gameplay by letting player 2 climb on DK's back for those more challenging parts for 2 players, but Returns got it almost perfect.
Played the 3DS version and struggled with it. But after finishing Tropical Freeze and loving the hell out of it, I went back to Returns and was finally in tune with it. Beat the game as well. Looking forward to having it on the Switch
I had a buddy that was a die hard fan of DKC on the SNES, the guy since middle school would not shut up about how awesome the DKC games on SNES were, so he was real excited when he learned that a new Donkey Kong Country game was coming out. And then he played it... And from the moment that guy played it, he became a person that was anti any revival of any franchise. All because he just hated how DKC Returns played so much, and he called it a cash grab that was an insult to the original SNES trilogy. When DKC Tropical Freeze came out, I bought it on the Wii U and invited him over, and he just looked at me with disgust, and after much convincing he played it, mostly because I talked to him about how Cranky Kong was playable in this one, and after he did play it his hate just grew even bigger, mostly because he said that Cranky Kong lost his charm, as he was supposed to be a cranky old man that hated everyone and everything, basically one of those old people that would yell at kids "Get off my lawn!", and in the original SNES trilogy, the guy would always troll on the player, looking down on them and always challenging them to all sorts of stuff, but in Tropical Freeze he was just a chill old man that was hanging out with his family. I personally don't think the same way as that friend, as I think that there is some fun to be had in all of these games, but I never completed the Return games, because everytime I would play it my friend would say that I was part of the problem, where companies are not even trying anymore with new games, as people will just buy whatever has Nintendo characters no matter if its good or not, and I can kind of see that with how lazy Nintendo has been, and how even Pokemon is releasing unfinished buggy games.
Your friend sounds like a slave to nostalgia, I grew up with the Rare trilogy and still love them, but I never sympathized with this idea that Retro's DKC titles are immensely inferior compared to the SNES trilogy, to me they're equally as good as the originals, even better in some aspects.
Returns is my favorite, however I haven’t played it since I was kid, so my opinion is more on the nostalgia side. Upon playing DKC, DKC 2, DKC 3, and DKL, I would say this game is missing two things: Water levels and animal buddies. I can understand the removal of animal buddies because Diddy Kong has basically filled that role in this game, but I really wish they made water levels. Not only would the ambience, music and overall serene, calm and nostalgic feeling return, but it’d also be a great excuse to bring back Enguarde. I think the HD remaster should’ve given us new water levels for this reason. What’s gotten me obsessed with this game recently is my love for its environments along with the concept art. I love nature so much and seeing this wild island awakens that passion in me. It’s definitely inspired me with my own ideas for a video game I want to make in the future. (RIP: Giant DK Head)
This game blew my mind as a kid with how detailed the environments were compared to New Super Mario Bros or any other 2D platformer not called Trine. It's probably a touch overlooked now due to being sandwiched between the beloved originals and the best 2D platformer ever made, but still worth a play
As far as video game franchises are concerned I see a perfect parallel between Donkey Kong Country and the Halo series. The original Halo trilogy is universally praised, like the original DKC trilogy, with Rare being the equivalent to Bungie. Retro Studios is, more or less, the 343 Industries of Donkey Kong Country. Every Halo after Reach is unfairly compared to the Bungie games, much like DKCR and Tropical Freeze are unfairly compared to the original Rare trilogy. Both franchises are held to such an impossibly high standard that every time there's a new entry a lot of the long-time fans can't help but feel at least a little disappointed in some way, shape, or form. It's amazing what nostalgia can do to a person.
The slight graphics issues are not dealbreaker for me. I won't notice nor will I care. This game is great. I usually never buy day 1 games, but I'm buying this one. Played both previous versions, and although it doesn't quite have that Rare charm, it is a stellar game with fantastic level design and set pieces. ...The controls were holding it back and the only other problem I had with it was the sound design: they didn't treat the old sound effects or character voices like they were sacred and irreplaceable, like you might see in a Mario or Pokemon game. They are close enough to be passable, but those old sound effects were iconic to me and I feel they are sorely missed.
I always hated the Wii's controls how they made you shake the control in order to pull off a specific move. And I agree I would've preferred if they gave us an option for this instead of forced that on us.
Interesting thought but DKC Returns HD releases roughly the same amount of time after the Wii original did as DKC3 and the Wii original of DKCR did too. Nov 1996 to Nov 2010 to Jan 2025 😊 the cycle of nostalgia continues! Really good video btw!
I’m feeling cautious optimism. I would like to play this game again, but I’m perplexed by the graphical elements missing in the trailers. It’s only a handful, but it’s almost every shot something is missing or not right - so what does the rest of the game look like? I will wait until after this game releases and see if there have been fixes… a month away is cutting it very close, but we don’t know how old the trailer footage is, and I have seen one other instance of all graphic bugs being fixed before a games launch… so, this is a wait and see for me.
I got this game as christmas present for Wii some... dunno, maybe 10 years ago and I still haven't finished it. That caught me off guard as I love the original DKC trilogy dearly. Yes, even the 3rd one. I would happily push through harder parts of DKC 2 and 3, but Returns is just so barebones and constantly frustrating that it just left me cold.
When I first played Donkey Kong Country Returns. It was the first platformer I ever played that did not come from one of those plug and play NES collections. Since the Wii was also my second console right behind the PSP motion control was natural to me. I never understood the complaints until I played wii remote without the nunchuck after a long time and realized the normal Wii remote way more limiting. I realized it's just all in the wrist with nunchuck but with Wii remote you shake the whole controller which in hindsight is not great but this game has always held a special place in my memories and I will defend it even with it's flaws. I went back to play the older games and I think donkey country 2 is right behind returns for me personally the momentum based gameplay is awesome. The original is a bit too simple for me but that's what you love about it and that great. The atmosphere and control is great we are allowed our opinions anyways that's my opinion on it God bless you.
I really liked it when I played it on Wii, but I never beat it on there... But then I played it on 3DS and well, I LOVED it! I'm not bothered by the frame rate, it's just a better version of the game, and it really let it shine! I beat it on 3DS (during a bus ride lol) with the default Wii difficulty! And it honestly looks so impressive in real hardware too! It's a big thing with 3DS games where like, they look SOOOO Much better on the real thing than they do on recordings...
I think you may need to talk about the Country series lil step-brother and that's Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, which I feel Returns borrows a lot from. I enjoyed the first Returns as its an excellent platformer that a lot of games afterwards borrowed from such as Nikoderiko The Magical World. Its just that special sauce was missing compared to the first game.
Great mention of the control scheme on the Wii edition. I still to this day do not understand why they didn't enable Classic Controller support, it would have made the games far more enjoyable. Anybody who's played Mario Kart Wii with the classic controller will understand.
Having a modded Wii really opened up the game for me thanks to the Classic Controller hack. It makes such a huge difference, just as the traditional controls on 3DS and presumably Switch do.
I’m very excited for a brand new donkey kong game because I never played DKCR before. The complaints about visuals don’t apply to me but I understand why people are upset lol
Bro, I know the Switch Returns seems like a cash grab. But after nothing since Tropical Freeze, I think this may be Nintendo wondering if they can use the ip again. So if the Switch Returns does really in sales we may get another Donkey Kong game! And that’ll be worth the money for the Switch port.
I prefer button controls but idk the motion controls really weren't bad. I found them pretty damn responsive for what they were. I can't really remember them fucking up my platforming. I feel like this point of them ruining the game is greatly exaggerated.
I have good memories playing this with my brother and we recently (Last year) 100% it. That said, the graphics are a huge drop down compared to the SNES gritty style for me. Also, what do I need this game for? Liteally nothing about it stands out to me as memorable.
DKC 3 is actually my favorite. 2nd place goes to either DKC 2 or Tropical Freeze. I do like Returns and DKC 1 but not as much. I like Returns over DKC 1 though.
I remember getting legitimately angry at the devs for the time trial mode. Like, it was one of those few instances where I seriously doubted some devs understanding as to how video games work. Even more than the shaky wii mote thingy (which was likely a decision made by some higher ups). You (as in the devs) are telling me that there is very little error for the gold medal (which there reasonably should be), but when I die, not only does the timer stay and it sends me back to the last checkpoint, meaning I'll savely lose the chance for the gold medal, I also have to watch some stupid ass transition cutscene? Every single time? And I don't get an option in the pause menu to restart, I have to go back to the world map first? Bruh, have you ever played time trial or speedrunning in a video game before?
I was super excited when I saw the E3 announcement for this game since I love the original games. I bought it day one, beat it and unlocked all of the secret levels in a couple of weeks. Haven't played the game since then. Looking back nothing about it seems very memorable. No song, no particular stage or special moment sticks out to me. The level design might be great but the game as a whole feels very mediocre. One thing I hate looking at the game now is the art design. The characters Retro created, enemies and background characters, look like they could've been pulled straight out of Madagascar or any other modern western animated slop for that matter. The whole game does, really. Even Rambis redesign somehow makes him look so much more bland. I wish they'd kept the art and character design more true to the original triologi.
I’m 100% getting the remake, I loved and played the shit out of it when it first released in 2010 but it’s really sad how lackluster is in the enemies department…no Kremlings is such a shame but it still feels like a good “ambience” DK game. Tropical Freeze just sucks ass, sorry 😂
@ I reeeeally tried to like it, but it just feels so empty, with just a few enemies that look straight from a Dreamworks movie…but also the lack of any attempt to bring some atmosphere. It just looks empty and barren to me.
It just doesn't feel like an actual upgrade to the original, and because it was announced during Donkey Kong Country's 40th anniversary it feels like a half-assed anniversary gift from Nintendo. -_-
My favorite DKC games 1.Donkey Kong Country Diddy’s Kong Quest 2.Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze 3.Donkey Kong Country Returns 4.Donkey Kong Country 3 and the original Donkey Kong Country. Game I hate:Donkey Kong 64
I remember gettin' this for Christmas, and being extremely disappointed. from the offset. the game sucks when those lava eggs hatch. those things look nothing like anything in the Donkey Kong Country world. the graphics suck too
I was a DKC fan since I was six when the original game came out, after the Rare buyout I thought DKC would never return. So I was completely elated when DKC Returns came out, and it quickly became my favorite game for the Wii. But the series has felt cursed since then, people hated Returns just because it wasn't identical to the original, but that's what made me love it so much. I actually liked the Tiki Tak Tribe and think they made more sense as an enemy group than the Kremlings did. I liked the new bombastic style of it, and it still felt faithful to the spirit of the originals. In spite of all the negativity toward Returns HD, I'm still excited for it, because it remains one of my favorite games in the series.
I sorely missed all the fan favorite side characters and enemies like the rest of the fanbase, but did that keep DKCR from being a lackluster game? Absolutely not. I do wonder if Nintendo legally can’t use the Kremlings because they were created by Rare.
No, this game sucked in several ways, first of all for the graphics, the backgrounds, while in the original DKC we had pseudo realistic backgrounds, here we have the usual animated style crap: not immersive like the originals. many of the musics are beautiful but not as much as the originals, same thing goes for the sound effects of all kinds that do not help to enter the scene, they never imitate cartoonish noises: hasty style. one of the shittiest things about this game, and the absence of water levels, the absence of the protagonist's ability to swim! as if he had forgotten how the f**** to swim! if you fall into the water you die, like in Zelda 2. this is one of the most annoying and shitty things about the game, anything else? the lack of Kremlings, the tedious bosses with irregular patterns, the in-level saves, the pain in the ass of the pig telling you whether to use the white Kong, the frustrating controls, the lack of animal friends, the lack of all the other Kongs, if this shit had been made with the graphics of the original Donkey Kong, everyone would have preferred that on all fronts. same thing, if they had taken the original and transposed it into these graphics. this is a poor, hypocritical, shitty, delusional, poorly made game that only plays on the nostalgia and hypocrisy of having this name! luckily, tropical freeze is already much better and fits the original concept more.
I personally like returns more than tropical freeze. So nostalgic for this game!!! Edit: AND IM GLAD THERE ARE NO WATER LEVELS! Anyone who wants them wants to hate the game.
@TheJustintendo Also, I really like the motion controls! They make you feel like you are donkey kong, and although it is less precise, I think I'd still go back and play the original after hd comes out just to play with the motion controls.
No one wants to hate the DK game but the lack of water levels is just inconsistent with the entire rest of the series. - DKC - DKC2 - DKC3 - DK64 - Jungle Beat - Tropical Freeze DK and the Kongs can swim. But as soon as DK or Diddy even touch water in Returns they drown or die. That's just not right. It would be like if Link forgot how to use a Sword in a Zelda game despite doing it in literally EVERY other Zelda game.
I remember first learning about Donkey Kong Country Returns from a commercial where a guy in a Gorilla Suit was playing it on a Wii in the middle of a jungle. That was an amazing surprise for me back in the day. Then only a few days later, my Aunt gave me a copy of the game for Christmas. That was an amazing time. I love Returns. It is probably my second favorite next to the original SNES game. The level design is so creative, and it's multiplayer is so much fun. Can't wait to replay it on Switch next year. 🌴🏝🦧 I only hope that this is teasing a future game from Retro in the future. It's been 10 years since Tropical Freeze.

This game on the WIi still looks super fun to play.
I really like the controls on the Wii version. So much, that when I played Tropical Freeze, I use the same controls.
I’m very excited for a brand new donkey kong game because I never played DKCR before.
The complaints about visuals don’t apply to me but I understand why people are upset lol
Exactly!
Personally I am excited fot this port, being able to play the 3DS exclusive levels in a bigger screen is enough for me to look forward to it.
Ditto!
I agree!!
I prefer button controls but idk the motion controls really weren't bad. I found them pretty damn responsive for what they were. I can't really remember them fucking up my platforming. I feel like this point of them ruining the game is greatly exaggerated.
It's all up to preference. I just can't stand motion controls like that.
I’m so excited for it!
Yeaaaahhh it was a problem
I still wonder if they're gonna add extra kongs. If they could do it in tropical freeze, i don't see why they couldn't do it here
I wish they would have!
I wish they'd kept the art and character design more true to the original triologi.
donkey kong
I’m 100% getting the remake, I loved and played the shit out of it when it first released in 2010 but it’s really sad how lackluster is in the enemies department…no Kremlings is such a shame but it still feels like a good “ambience” DK game. Tropical Freeze just sucks ass, sorry 😂
Ah man I LOOOVE Tropical Freeze 😭 It's all subjective though! I'm excited for the remaster!
@ I reeeeally tried to like it, but it just feels so empty, with just a few enemies that look straight from a Dreamworks movie…but also the lack of any attempt to bring some atmosphere. It just looks empty and barren to me.
Now that's a hot take. I personally like returns better and would choose it over TF, but I wouldn't say tropical freeze is terrible.
I really enjoyed this. And I’m really looking forward to the HD reissue. I’ll be playing it on a SNES controller.
Thank you! I am very excited for it as well!
It just doesn't feel like an actual upgrade to the original, and because it was announced during Donkey Kong Country's 40th anniversary it feels like a half-assed anniversary gift from Nintendo. -_-
60 fps, no motion control, for me is a must buy.
Yep, exactly this!
My favorite DKC games
1.Donkey Kong Country Diddy’s Kong Quest
2.Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
3.Donkey Kong Country Returns
4.Donkey Kong Country 3 and the original Donkey Kong Country.
Game I hate:Donkey Kong 64
Mines the same but swap 64 and tropical freeze
Mines 1. dkc2
2.dkc tropical freeze
3. Dkc 1
4.dkc3
5. Dkc returns
6. Dkc land
7. Donkey Kong jungle beat
8. Dk64
I've always felt in the minority in saying that DKCR > Tropical Freeze.
I am so excited for Returns HD too, so much of the hate is so forced.
So your marathon is just gonna skip DK64? D:
😉
Um… why’d you skipped DK64?
😉
I personally like returns more than tropical freeze. So nostalgic for this game!!!
Edit: AND IM GLAD THERE ARE NO WATER LEVELS! Anyone who wants them wants to hate the game.
Completely fair!
- DKC
- DKC2
- DKC3
- DK64
- Jungle Beat
- Tropical Freeze
DK and the Kongs can swim. But as soon as DK or Diddy even touch water in Returns they drown or die. That's just not right. It would be like if Link forgot how to use a Sword in a Zelda game despite doing it in literally EVERY other Zelda game.
I didn't like the Returns games... I think the difficulty in general wasn't balanced as well as the original games, and the overall vibe felt off.
Completely valid!
Are you including Tropical Freeze? Because I personally feel like it’s as good as any game in the original trilogy.
I only hope that this is teasing a future game from Retro in the future. It's been 10 years since Tropical Freeze.
great video. I am currently playing tropical freeze on switch. Is very hard game
Thank you! Tropical Freeze is unbelievably great to me
