  • Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, or DKC 2 is one of the highest-regarded games ever made, and for very good reason. Much like the first game, it has a very distinct tone and atmosphere that sets it apart from other platformers of that era. Let's find out what that is, together!

I wouldn't say it's underrated - everyone knows and acknowledges it's the best of the trilogy and a top 10 game on the SNES.
I just 102%'d it and DKC 1 again for about the 6-7th time and loved every second. playing DKC3 now and I am starkly once again reminded of how BAD the music in DKC3 is. It's not just 'not as good' as David Wise's first two OSTs it's actually bad,

Forest Interlude sounds like something that plays in a Don Bluth movie, that has a lot of dark moments but has a bittersweet hope throughout for things to get better. Like “yeah, things are terrible now, you aren’t in your bed safe and sound, but it’s going to be okay. Keep moving.”

In 1995 I used to go to bramble scramble and hit pause so I could fall asleep to stickerbush symphony. I’ve heard just about every lofi and remix version of those tracks by David Wise and they all take me back to the 90s. Back to back home runs man. I think Ken Burns has some competition now. Keep em coming

Nailed it again! I feel like the soundtrack of this game gives it a sense of being a sort of love story between Diddy and Dixie. Not a particularly romantic love story; more the sort of "mutual unwavering support through adversity" relationship often represented in Studio Ghibli love stories. Like these two can overcome anything because of their commitment to each other.
I'm excited to hear your tackle DKC3's "negative emotional aura" as some have framed it. I love DKC3, but I can't deny the Northern European setting feels almost haunted.

Thanks for reiterating how I've felt about the Bramble Levels and Stickerbush Symphony as a song. It DOES feel sad. I always thought it was maybe because navigating through the brambles of this size and length felt insurmountable. They just seem to go on forever! But you're right, it also says a lot about Crocodile Isle, because so much is in disrepair. Where there's water, ships are crashed everywhere. Where there's LAVA, ships are crashed. Zingers are infesting the theme park, which is itself falling apart. I love it.

If you're interested in Donkey Kong, look up the composer David Wise. He's the genius behind the music of DKC, DKC2 and DKC3. In fact the songs he wrote for DKC were so iconic and memorable that they brought him back for Tropic Freeze and remastered many of his original melodies.

I know most people discuss the bramble levels, but really i was so impressed by the uniqueness and originality of ALL the levels, from climbing up a pirate ship to going through a bayou to being in a beehive to going on a roller coaster ride, it just had so many original themes.

I’ve long konsidered Krook’s March to be the anthem of the Kremlings, so much so that the team and I wrote lyrics for it(see: Return to Krocodile Isle). It serves as the antithesis to ‘DK Island Swing’ from the first game and really puts into perspective just how far you’ve kome in this little adventure. You’ve scaled the Crocodile Isle citadel, laid waste to K. Rool’s army and his generals- Diddy is on the kusp of saving his uncle from the scaly klutches of the Kremlings…but there’s still work here to be done. You’re locked in on this final stretch and there’s no turning back now. You’ve entered the oppressive korridors of K. Rool’s Keep, guarded by Rool’s royal guard and lined to the brim with prison cells just begging for more simian occupants. Rool even has his men flood the tower with liquid tritium/phosphor waste as a last-ditch effort to keep the Kongs from reaching the top where DK is being held. It’s exhilarating, to say the least.

I always felt that Krook's March is a hidden gem amongst the many fantastic music of DKC2.
For a enemy stronghold theme, I always felt a rush when listening to the slow buildup of the rhythm heading to the release of it's epic conviction theme before the music repeats.
A buildup to the confronting battle between Diddy/Dixie against the King/Kaptain K Rool.

  • @Ultimabuster92
    @Ultimabuster92 7 дней назад +3

This game is very special. It has such a unique atmosphere. Adventurous, dangerous, somewhat dark (for me) I remember the level in World 4, just before the boss, where you are Rambi and you get chased by the boss. I remember being afraid of that level as a kid, to the point where i couldn't finish the game FOR YEARS. I always started a new safe file and played until i got to that level, before starting anew, it was just so scary to me.
I also feel that this game puts me into a very melancholic mood sometimes. And much of that i put on the music. People say, that Stickerbrush Symphony is such a beautiful song... i just find it sad, it always made me sad, even as a kid. That doesn't mean, that i don't like it, but it doesn't make me happy either. Mining Melancholy is just that, a very melancholic song. Melancholy was a feeling i couldn't quite place as a kid, i didn't understand the feeling. Being sad, despite not having a reason to, was foreign to me, but it was also intruiging.
Some other aspects of the game seemed... not really scary, but.. eerie to me. Like the rollercoster levels. Why? The screaming throughout the track. I loved it, but i also felt danger, i didn't feel safe, i was on edge the entire time.
The castle levels and their music... they always had the feeling of "There's no going back now" to it, some sort of finality. They made it clear, that this is truly the end of the game. The fact, that i never got to these levels as a kid... somehow added to the feeling of finality... like i finally broke through a barrier, now finally facing what is at the end.
Not to mention the overworld theme and the boss theme. Intimidating, nervewracking and threatening.
All in all... i never felt secure in this game, i never felt safe. Like you said, it's enemy territory, it's supposed to be like that and i love it. But i also never felt the innocent part you spoke off. Completely lost on me. I always felt the stakes, the seriousness... and for me, even dark elements and feelings like dread and fear.
I hope you also do another video on DCK3, Returns and Tropical Freeze. I have a lot to say about those aswell, for example, how DCK3 was the complete opposite of DCK2 for me and STILL an awesome game.

To me DKC2 is to DKC what SMB3 was to SMB. The first two were both on the simple side (not a bad thing) but with their sequels, while similar mechanically, upped the ante quite a bit. Gameplay was more in-depth, level designs were expanded, the bonus levels became more than just areas to collect extra lives, bosses became more complex, and the music was arguably more in-depth as well. You really felt that the designers after laying the foundation really were allowed to cut a bit loose and be extra creative.

Dkc2 imo is the perfect example of environmental and atmosphere storytelling in a video game , on top of being a fun and fast paced adventure with you plowing your way through bonus stages and jumping from platform to platform and rolling through the Kremlings, it also gives you a very in depth feeling of what the world around you , around diddy and dixie feel , the pre-rendered graphics (which are my favorite game graphicsbto date) combined with the music just really make you feel like you're actually there , hell , i theorize that the music can also be a manifestation of what the kongs feel about their surroundings , they feel the danger, the dread , the sadness, but also the fun and action heavy moments, like you said , dkc2 jsut leaves you with a feeling you can't describe, one that will stay with you long after you're done with the game, and that is very true , ever since i played the game for the first time 2 years ago, i still feel what the game gave me and what it means to me , and that's the brilliance of dkc and rare games in general, they just leave you with feelings and adventures that you'll never forget and will always want more from , it's just quite sad that we'll probably never see a proper rare game ever again because of Microsoft, but anyway, amazing video, i had a great time watching and im waiting for the dkc3 vid , have a good one :>

RAREWARE became legendary when Diddy's Kong Quest was released.
DKC was a strong emerging for RAREWARE since their long forgotten Ultimate days on the ZX Spectrum.
DKC2 was the beginning of RAREWARE showing the gaming world that there was a reason why Nintendo saw value in the niche UK Developer who's only other game of note was Battletoads amongst the many Movie/TV/Sports licensed games they had made with LJN and other publishers they had to work for during the NES years a console gen before.

Nintendo has made some doozy mistakes over the years - Virtual Boy, going with cartridge over CD for the N64, fucking up the deal with Sony that spawned the playstation, the dearth of launch titles for the gamecube and the awful launch of the Wii U, but not fucking locking down Rare as a committed long term in house AA/AAA Nintendo studio and letting Microsoft buy them out remains up there with the worst of them

If I may make a couple of episode suggestions, I've always gotten a really eerie feeling of impending apocalypse from the Street Fighter III trilogy (New Generation in particular). Just like mainstream music (in my opinion) died in the late 90s, video games died (in my opinion also) around 2010, Everything now feels like a soulless cash grab Of games that don't work on release date that are full of microransactions and a ridiculous opportunity to inject politics... In reality, its controls are not as tight as the video says, it's visuals are only saved by the game"s poor resolution, its collectible system, it's level design is way too tight for the level of control and screen crunch that you have, and general quality of life is low. Many platformers, even games within its own series, have surpassed it since, and it should be no surprise that it isn't considered one of the best 2d platformers in the modern day.

Donkey Kong Country 2 is flawed. not having the choice of playing as Donkey Kong is dumb.
it takes away the uniqueness of the gameplay since Dixie plays the same as Diddy

Look up the DKC2 rom hack "Project 4 Kongs" if you want to play as DK in it :D

@@xboxed720 I'm not really into hacks, homebrew or whatever you call 'em
but thanks anyway though. my criticism is mostly based on original release.
I was pissed off back in 1995 when I read that Donkey Kong wasn't playable.
it didn't make sense since there had only been 1 Donkey Kong Country

I don't think that makes it flawed at all. Not to mention Dixie and Diddy are more agile and fun to play as anyways, and Dixie doesn't play the same as Diddy because she has her helicopter hair spin in 2 & 3 which is OP as hell. I always swap to Diddy in DKC1 because DK is slow and feels clunky to play as (as does Kiddy in 3).

I didn't play DKC2 at the time of its release but I played it a few years ago and, I don't quite understand why people generally considered this one to be superior to the first.
It's a great game of course, but I dunno, the fact that you can't play as Donkey Kong, the saturated colors, the lack of atmospheric moments compared to the first one (I mean, except for that amazing Stickerbrush Symphony theme, all the other musics of the game feel "uglier" compared to those from DKC1).
And with DKC2 it's the beginning of the "too many different stuff to collect" problem 😀
Plus the lack of some kind of context when you're starting the game (suddenly you're not in the jungle but on a pirate ship, you don't really know why. There's no introduction whatsoever, or any kind of "story")
Sure, DKC2 feels more like "an adventure" compared to the more atmospheric DKC1. Therefore it's action packed but I dunno, overall I consider it as an uglier/less refined game.
The purity and beauty of DKC1, combined with lots of really fun (and new at the time) game mecanics (the barrels, the rhino, the minecart, etc) makes it a true masterpiece for me.
