  • I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and there's a lot of baggage around this condition for fat people so I decided to talk about how I'm processing this news.

I was also diagnosed with diabetes recently, as well as another complicated condition often correlated with weight, and it's been really tough to express the unwanted thoughts washing machine I've been in since. (I'm looking for a fat-competent therapist, lol.) It's painful to try to advocate for yourself with doctors while also having the stigma voice in your own head. I don't think we talk enough about the fear that comes with being advised toward intentional weight loss when you've been through the restrictive/disordered wringer and know the toll it takes on your physical and mental health. I'm trying to set clear expectations for using a weight-neutral approach to management, but in a world that demonizes fat bodies, that's been a rough task.
I don't know, this may not be helpful, but I guess I'm just trying to say I get it and it meant something to me to hear someone else get it. I have a dear friend, an ally in fat liberation, who keeps reminding me during my daily spin cycle that what I'm doing is incredibly hard and that I deserve support, especially from myself.

11:06 - I feel that the narrative of diabetes to non-thin/fat people is the new version of AIDS/HIV to non cis/het people back in the day.
It's simply used as a shaming tactic for preconceived "choices" and some form of deserved punishment for not being part of the cultural ideal in some aspect.
I am sincerely empathetic that you aren't getting the full care you need (something I personally deal with on a regular basis).
I haven't finished your video yet; but for what it's worth - it's nice to see an upload from you again and I hope things improve.

Happened to me too. I effing hate it that the medics who blamed everything including my bad synases on my weight get to validate themselves. I too have ADHD and I think it makes my relationship with food complicated and in the UK we get free healthcare. I can't get ADHD meds because of my diabetes.

I have heard - and gone through - some horror stories and inane stunts pulled by people in power (or those simply exerting it) - but I *have* to say: WTF.
"You aren't neurotypical so we won't allow you to monitor and control your blood sugar." Is one of the weirdest takes I have *ever* heard.

A struggle with self-compassion and body neutrality is one that's made beyond difficult with the social systems we currently live in... the closest to success I've had is by treating my body like a separate creature I just have to care for and encourage to thrive; like one of my many aquarium denizens. Love yourself like the resilient but vulnerable thing you are, and aim to accept both the joys and limits of residing in flesh. Wishing you all the best with your health and happiness, thank you for sharing with us and building this space for others to share as well ❤

My grandfather was diabetic too. And as someone on the heavier side I understand the stigma (I don't have diabetes, but I still understand the stigma and the pressure to stay healthy in spite of my weight).
Whatever the outcome will be weight wise, you'll still be a kick ass RUclipsr ❤

Its the deprivation with diets - you can only say no to yourself for so long especially when meal planning (or planning ahead) is difficult. When i went to a diet club the teacher was all - have you cooked something lovely and that doesn't work for me.
As for judgement when i had a diabetes diet consultation there was the guy of South Asian descent going but i already do all these things you're recommnding and i still got Type 2 diabetes. He was told if you hadn't you'd have got it younger. Health can be crapshoot.

You don't deserve this, and you are worthy of care, joy, and a long life regardless of what weight you're at. Sending love.

Thank you for being willing to share your vulnerability as you come to terms with this diagnosis. Rambling it may be, but very eloquent, and expressive of how heart and mind struggle and circle around difficult things around health and our relationship with our bodies. As a fat person living with a chronic condition myself (CFS/ME), I know the frustration (and more) of dealing with health professionals who can only see my weight as the problem. I have appreciated all your videos calling out fat shaming; they - and this video - remind me that I'm not alone in experiencing this. Solidarity! And once you have had a chance to process and get a grasp on the situation, may you find a sustainable and not overwhelming way of managing the diabetes itself.
ps - the live reading of the Dream sounds fun - I'll try to remember to log in to that (though it will probably be in the middle of the night for me!

I was recently diagnosed with diabetes myself.... And at first I was devastated.... I had my first follow up 2 days ago, and I had lost 25 lbs in 2 months.... Controlling my blood sugar has finally given me the first steps to controlling my weight.... I didn't even have to give up everything either...
I hope this is an experience that you also experience, I am rooting for you!

    I hate doctors appointments.
I was sent to hospital by gp because of chest pain but it’s „just“ related to POTS and not a heart attack or lungembolism like my doctor suspected. It can be really scary.
And I got the blood sugar drops from POTS too. It’s so annoying. Tho it’s not diabetes. It’s annoying when I eat my blood sugar drops because my body over corrects. And my blood sugar drops if I don’t eat or move because idk.. it wants to make my life more difficult? (I got all of it from long Covid) 🙄
I hope you can get sensors for blood sugar, they make life so much easier with blood sugar issues and detecting them early.
The fatphobic morality thing is so annoying. Like I’m really thin and still got blood sugar issues. Most people I know who got diabetes are skinny. And still people tell me and others were too skinny to have that.. like obviously not.🙄
My doctors have refused to treat my body starving me before because „what if you get fat after we treat this?“ and li was like “??? I don’t care! if this issue continues and I starve I will be dead!“ also literally every fat person I know is much healthier than me. It’s so bad that even doctors are like this. They should be better. 😖

Also I've been dealing with depression for more than 10 years, and I've only now come to terms with the fact that sometimes, I'm just... not able to do stuff like I think I should. Once my doctor had to physically sign a paper for my sick leave, and asked me: well if you're too depressed to go to work why are you here in my office now?
And this is just my latest experience with doctors, and I'm still mostly a student so doctors don't really dictate much of my work / health life.

If it helps, diabetes is an autoimmune issue, disease if you subscribe to the pathology. No one chooses their immune system or Microbiome or any of that. We all deserve the resources and support to live as the most functional sustainable versions of ourselves at any size, with any equipment or supplies. no shame. No fracking fear.

I hope you'll be okay. I don't have diabetes even though I should. But I do have severls other extremely painful conditions that limit my life. With obesity I've stopped going to doctors and keeping up wirh bloodwork etc, I either feel so ashamed to call a bigger cab because of my size or I'm in pain that it's too much to handle. I put off everything from dental appointments to heart mris until they get tired of me and tell me to not come at all. I don't do it on purpose and I need help but I'm at the bottom of that well you spoke of and can't get out.

I've also been diagnosed with diabetes and am on Prozac as well. Though it runs heavily in my family and I knew one day I would probably get it and I did once I hit my 40s. Its been hard but the diabetes meds (pills, Metformin) I'm on have made me lose weight a little. I was offered Ozempic but I turned it down because I'm not ready for needles and I don't want rapid weight loss plus its expensive. You'll be ok, diabetes is very manageable now.

As someone from a family where 3/4 members have diabetes or/and heart cronic conditions (here in Mexico is like the regular combo of illnesses) I do notice how people treat my grandparents (thin, with diabetes) and some uncles or cousins who are fat as "deserving" of that.

I was thinking A Midsummer Night's Dream would be a good thing to read just seconds before you said it. That will be fun! I hope I will be able to watch. And I hope the attack on Gaza is over by then. I don't believe in evil people, but people can certainly do evil things, even when they don't intend to, and evil things, like what's happening to Gaza, need to stop.
I have ADHD, too, so I understand the irony of getting a condition that needs constant monitoring. I can't even remember to take my ADHD medication on time!

As a trans person I've been noticing a strong narrative from some people that requiring healthcare means someone must have made poor choices or be less moral than other people. It's a very ableist attitude. Having a health condition is not a punishment for existing in a body. We all have bodies and they require healthcare at times. "You might need healthcare in the future" needs to stop being used as a threat.
