Some of My Favourite Love Stories
I was inspired to make this while editing my Bridgerton video. It got me thinking about the love stories that I love and think work as great stories. There's no ranking and I make no claim that these are in any way "objectively" the best, they are just stories I love.

    Sheridan and Delen is one of those couples that are better when they are togheter then when the courting happens. JMS is an odd one where he is often better at established couples then actually establishing them. It's refreshing. Very little romance drama after they get together. It is possible to write a couple in a TV show, where there is drama, without making it about romance drama. Glad you put them in

    Sometimes, I find a video that looks very interesting, relatable, and important. Sometimes, though, it looks so important that it scares me. I know I'm going to learn something that's going to change me. So I tuck it away for when I'm feeling brave. Well I was finally feeling brave enough today... I was halfway through this video when I realized it was special. I've been gaining weight for a while now (I think it's heath/medication related) and it's been bringing my mood down. But I really feel like I'm walking away from this video with a new, fresh perspective. It's like my brain is a stack of blocks and one was out of place, throwing everything off, and this video nudged it back into place. Thank you so much for this amazing video essay. Just started the video, but want to comment. A romance video in autumn is fitting, bc they're cozy, warm, and comforting, like hygge. It makes sense, especially the way you describe them in the beginning of the video. Remember twilight? It's so autumnal haha. As well as you've got mail, or sleepless in Seattle, other Meg Ryan movies.

      @starsandmoonsabove 8 дней назад

      I want to add after watching most of the video. Because it makes even more sense now to talk about romance in autumn. A lot of love stories are tragic, so they have a similar vibe to fall. Right after the heartbreak from the love story comes a cold winter and you curl up into a cacoon and wait for the spring. And then the cycle continues. I need to rewatch my fair lady now! Also, la traviata is such a famous piece, but I don't think I've ever seen it in full (let alone read). Same with fiddler on the roof.

    Ahhh! On my brain stem right off the batting cage! "When Harry Met Sally" is absolutely the experience you described for me. (I always called films that do this my 'chicken noodle soup movies' though your analogy is much more apt). I owe you a more detailed, on topic, comment as I was mentally checkmarking my list in antici... while you went through yours, so I *do* have an answer to the prompt. However; I realized upon your mentioning that I somehow missed your mentioned Bridgerton video so I shall watch that and come back. In the interim - perhaps it's because my aesthetic reflects these in various forms regardless of, but occasionally magnified, a particular holiday/season - I love the aesthetic of this video; a combination of roses with celestial not only looks great but feels so quintessentially *you.* (That could partially be my bias with nostalgia tied to the iconic imagery and your interpretation from the video I first discovered you regarding Pleasantville and/or various plays and watch-alongs... But I think cosmic blossoms still encapsulates the 'you' we're presented with on this platform. It feels *right* and looks lovely. Either way, it's always nice to see you!) Enough rambling, onto the missed video and back to the topic.

      Now I've watched it - what a great selection! Some I know and love well too (Zhivago, LofA, Fiddler, Color Purple, MFL, Roman Holiday and of course the sci-fi ones), but I appreciate your different readings of some of them - makes me want to rewatch them all, and yes, we do need a full video from you on Lawrence of Arabia! Some others either unknown to me (the Canadian ones!) or heard of but not seen yet. Your first choice, when Harry met Sally, I have problems with, because after exploring the whole issue of whether there can be friendship between (hetero) men and women without sex getting in the way, by showing such a developing friendship , the film gives in to the prevailing hetero normative romantic couple ending. As a non-coupled person, i find it sad that in so many stories, friendship love is not sufficient and romantic love is seen as the true goal. (But the elderly couples at the end are very cute!). I'm glad that despite this choice, your selection of favourite love stories includes many about different kinds of love.

    To me, it seems that a lot of the desire aimed at fat people is rooted in fetishism of some kind. Like, you mentioned how media paints this picture that fat people are unwanted and how that clashes with reality, but I’d wager that a ton of fat people in real life not only feel unwanted but are unwanted because of fatphobia, which is just a byproduct of white supremacy. Speaking as a black man who used to be fat growing up, a lot of my peers would make fun of me for my weight. I’ve read countless stories of fat people, both men and women, complaining about their negative experiences with regards to living in a deeply fatphobic society. I think that while media reflects this and, instead of condemning “normal” society’s harsh treatment towards and negative preconceived notions of fat people, seems to gladly revel in it, I don’t think making extrneley optimistic or positive representation that shows a false reality is going to fix anything, especially when the problem of fatphobia is so deeply entrenched in our systems and collective consciousness. I’ve seen to many pieces of media targeted towards marginalized people where the message seems to be “just love yourself”, which infuriates me since that’s not enough to fix anything.

    This is a good question. I don't really know my answer - or maybe I know it, but I haven't thought about it enough to put it in words. What brought me to the fight in the first place was being in a position where I was treated badly and feeling helpless, like I couldn't do anything about it. Then, one day, I realized that maybe I can't make the people who hurt me change, but I can change the ways I've hurt other people. And once I started trying to see my world from an outsider's point of view, I realized that insider perspectives are very f*ked up and I want those perspectives to open up and change. It's interesting what you said about shame because I think a lot of people on the "inside" are ashamed of being human. Sometimes people say that non-marginalized people see marginalized people as animals, as not fully human, but I think they do see them as human, but they just hate human beings. They want to believe that they are superior to humanity and they don't have the same needs, wants, and irregularities that all humans do. They wind up cutting off their humanity to fit some ideal and they don't want be reminded that they are the same species as the people they despise. When people talk about "accepting yourself," I don't think it can be separated from having solidarity with marginalized people because accepting yourself means accepting that you are just as "disgusting" as the people you hate - which is actually not disgusting at all - if that makes sense.

    I am struggling with my why. It’s complicated. As with most things, I came into advocacy in an atypical fashion. It was never really a choice. It was about survival and trying to build just enough wake to ease the journey for those behind me who came next; not because I’m important. Because from the time I could form words, I was “good with them” so it was the closest to protection I could get I’m good at advocacy because I’ve had to be not because that particular aspect work logistics and personal safety or things i enjoyed or was the filled by. I like information I love research. I love seeing people understand things I explain to them in ways they hadn’t considered before. I don’t love being expected to educate on command or justify my existence when I’m trying to get a cup of coffee, even if sometimes I need to ask for a cup with a larger handle for my own safety and use knowing my own needs & understanding how the needs of others work doesn’t mean I always want to be on call for the explanation. existence should not come with public entitlement to education or entertainment. Opportunities., if possible sure if they’re made as request not as command or expectation. There’s also the sword of Damocles, that is “you have to make people aware of people like you because they probably haven’t seen anyone like you before they may not again so be the best shiniest best version that you can.“ it’s exhausting I don’t have a public platform specifically because I have dealt with this kind of public entitlement my entire life. I’m tired. My image and my story has been used without my consent more times than I can list and if I push back, I’m told I don’t understand or appreciate “the greater good” most of the time I’ve come to realize the greater good is not always worth my harm. All being said I know I can never really stop. The best I can do is do my best to control the narrative around me and presented carefully and as effectively as I can. I want to help, but I need to be better at protecting myself. No one else is going to protect me. Advocacy isn’t always a deliberate choice but taking care of each other should be. In whatever way we can. We owe each other care. We don’t know anyone a performance. I don’t want awareness. I don’t want acceptance. I want respect. I want inclusion. I want bodily autonomy for everyone. There’s an old *slogan that disability community borrowed along time ago. “nothing about us without us“ that’s probably as close to why as I’m getting.

    I think they set up a decent foundation in the first two seasons for this particular love story, but then fumbled the bag when it finally came down to it. They have a number of scenes in s2 where Colin and Penelope are speaking and connecting as friends, appreciating each other’s opinions and sharing inner thoughts. For some fans of this couple/s3, this was enough. To me, this was one of the ways the writing of the main story really suffered. I need to see *way* more to feel satisfied as a viewer. “Subtlety” for your main story line is not good writing. Subtlety should add layers, not require a viewer to watch with a magnifying glass to get what you’re trying to say. The main story and Colin’s arc were buried and that made me sad because I think it could have been really good. I do think there was more progression for Penelope than what is in this video BUT totally agree that at the end it is about everything being solved with confidence. I also completely agree about how they have reasoned diversity and race in the show. The makers keep explaining inaccuracies with saying it’s a “fantasy”. Then just make the racial diversity part of the fantasy of it instead of using terrible writing to explain the end of racism. Lady Jenevia recently did a video about how they should have gone the Brandy/Whitney Cinderella route so the casting could be truly inclusive. No explanation necessary. It just is. I wish they did that too. Another story that is prepared to do the work of what it could actually look like to undo racism can hopefully be written and then we can live in fantasy stories of what could have been had racism never existed.

    I completely agree with your analysis!I’m getting so tired of being told I lack media literacy because I didn’t buy the “friends to lovers” arc for Penelope and Colin. There’s way too much telling and almost no showing in this show. I love the show in general so I was disappointed to see the writing take such a dip in quality. The costumes really didn’t do it for me either. There was so much potential which is why I’m frustrated!

    In the book a part of Pen's glow up was losing a bunch of weight as well as changing her wardrobe. The unflattering dressing was clearly tied to her mother and tied to her mother's control issues and low opinion of Pen. I appreciate that, unlike the book the glow up didn't include weight loss, but dressing the way she felt good and that accentuated her. Don't disagree with you really. The world building has many issues, and the writing is lack lustre at best. But the wardrobe in the first two seasons was deliberate in regards to being unflattering and did have merit storytelling wise.
