LIstened to him the first time in 1982 in connection with the Culture against Apartheid Festival in Gaborone, Botswana, as close as you could come to South Africa at that time! Hugh Masekela and others were also there.

This music captures the soul of the African spirit. There is definitely the sound of lament and suffering but somehow joy and optimism which prevails and wins in the end. It is beautiful beyond words. He has vanquished oppression with his creativeness. We are eternally grateful.

This is blissful and so evocative of South Africa. I saw him live, just with Johnny Dyani, at the Bracknell Jazz festival in the late '70's. The summer sun was just setting, and they began with the simplest theme, much like this one. Having done so, they set off round the block with it, returning to it again after ten minutes or so before taking it for another walk around another block. They kept this up for well over an hour, without a pause and never changing the basic theme. A stunning display of improvisational virtuosity. Still one of my favourite gigs ever, and I have chills just thinking about it. Incidentally, they were followed on stage by Eberhard Weber and Jan Gabarek - as I said, a great gig.

This man is a genius, and Basil Coetzee a hell of a tenor sax ! Was at a wonderful concert in New York back in 1978. To this day one of the best concerts ever ( on par with Keith Jarrett ). Cannot count the number of friends I was able to convert to Abdullah Ibrahim music.

    Sans mot dire,
Tu as décrit nos pensées et nos rêves
    An Ga Ta
    Il est temps
    An ga ta !!!!
    Au trot,
    S’il vous plait, au trot
    Pas au galop
Simplement au trot sans faire de trop
    En petites cadences
    La danse de la malice
    Donner jusqu’à la lis
    Vider le calice
    An ga ta
    Il est temps
    Bonjour à toi
    Bonjour à vous
    Bonjour à tous
Le jour se lève au dessus de nos rêves
le chant du coq nous ramène à le réalité
    Lève-toi
    Marque tes pas
    Danse, saute, cris, éclate-toi
    Il est temps
    An ga ta !!!!
    La route est longue
    An ga ta !!!!
