    One of our favorite rides. Had a herd of prob 30 mountain goats walking by all around us while stopped on the top of the southern loop of the trail from Montezuma. That was after spending 30 min filming and watching two of the biggest bull moose I’ve ever seen down in the valley on the main trail. Were able to get extremely close safely. Easily the best wildlife viewing day we’ve ever experienced, and that’s after riding over 5k miles of trails all over the state and Utah the last 4 yrs.

    I lived in Summit County for 10 yrs. and been to Redcone many times and your footage was awesome but for anyone who's never gone down it they'll never really know how terrifying it can actually be when you're in the driver's seat , certain parts of it , specially the last section literally feels like you're driving of the side of a cliff , anyway that's the effect it always had on me.
    Its unforgettable.

    Nice. That brings back great memories. That's where I took my girlfriend (now wife) on out first date back around 1989 in the '85 CJ-7 with 31's and a 2" lift. That's all I ever did to that Jeep and we took it everywhere in CO like that other than some of the really tough stuff. It was the first Red Cone trip for both of us. Quite a first date. I did Red Cone on my dirtbike (Honda XR650)
    It was nothing... until I started on the downhill. Slid all the way down the steepest parts with the rear tire locked up. XR's are heavy with a high compression 4 stroke engine and I was skinny and light at 160 lbs. The conditions were dry and crumbly gravel and rocks, very loose. That was one time I wanted more tires.

      @@Trailsoffroad Honestly it has been a hot minute since I've been up there. The last time it poured rain. Which increased the difficulty level substantially. The downhill portion has shall we say a certain pucker factor. Had a few passengers refuse. "You are out of your mind I am not doing that." They got out and walked. One time on the descent the rocks just let loose underneath the Bronco and at that point we were just along for the ride. That was actually very concerning for what seemed an eternity.

    I’m trying to get out to Colorado next year and might try this one. I’ve got a mostly stock 4Runner TRD Pro (just tires, sliders and winch) and not much experience in the rocks. Y’all think I could make it with my limited skill level and non-lifted rig?

    • @Trailsoffroad
      @Trailsoffroad  3 года назад +1

      I think your vehicle can make it no problem. Definitely find another rig/group to go with to help with spotting lines and you should be good to go! The only difficult part was the root section with the boulder in the middle. The descent is not hard just keep your vehicle in its dedicated manual gearing as much as possible. Have fun, take lots of pics and leave a trail review when you do!

    33s? Aired down? I've been over Red Cone several times, back in the '70s, in my '76 Bronco with N78-15 Interurbans (basically a bias belted highway snow tire 7.00 - 15, 30" diameter. @28 - 30 psi. -similar in appearance to Super Traxion M&S.) Hickey coils in front with 2" re-arc'd stock leaves out back. Gabriel shocks around with Thorley's blowing through glass packs and everything else bone stock. I always figured if Model T's could go most anywhere on bicycle tires... Most guys back then were running TruTracs (tires) I just never saw the need for them, let alone having to live with them. The downhill is the fun part, you'll want your seat belt on to keep your nose off the windshield. ;-) First time for me was w/Officer of MH Club. We didn't cut any trees but did move some rocks around, not just to fill in a bit but to also prevent some parts from becoming issues that would cause others to create damages that would require a lot of work/machinery. Only aftermarket lockers worth mentioning back then were Truetracs (clack...clack...clack...), beyond that there really wasn't much else available then - no locking on demand axles or T-cases, no fancy suspensions, nobody getting out and spotting you (well, not without teasing you with unsavory names... ;-) .) You could build the engine up but to what end? Crawling doesn't take heaps of power. Roll cages were a 50/50 thing - if you went tippy on Red Cone there's no cage that's going to save you - you'd be better of watching a movie on your phone as you tumbled your way down.

    Dont underestimate the old body on frame Explorer.... Its stock ground clearance is higher than the jeep and many had true 4x4. Just no lockers...Still, a very capable vehicle that is comfortable on the roads....

      What we should have done is got some of the old pictures of Trint on the trails with his Explorer and added those into the video! We always enjoy seeing the rigs you don't always see out on the trails!

      that is a solid maybe. It really depends on the hard spot of the trail near the beginning. Check out our trail guide and that should help you decide. You can find the link to the guide in the video description above.

    • @Trailsoffroad
      @Trailsoffroad  3 года назад +1

      Hi Debbie! Unfortunately, we do not physically guide people. Our trail guides we create are meant to help you safely and confidently navigate the trails however. If you ever are looking for people to wheel with, either try a Facebook group or try to find a local club. Or, if you are already out there, try asking others if you can join them for the day! Our offroad community is usually very welcoming to others and would love another rig to join their group!
