As an owner of a RAV4 and a Honda Ridgeline, it's reassuring to know that being Jeepless doesn't necessarily mean being hapless. Now I have placed these iconic routes on my bucket list. THANKS!
People have done those trails in all kinds of vehicles over the years. Just keep on mind one missed rock and the lack of clearance can create a serious problem. Same for a wrong turn down a trail that is spicier. The west has thousands of miles of dirt roads, just be careful as rain erodes them and creates the need for high clearance.
Thank you for sharing the views 🙏, my wife and I are planning a trip in 2023, I just wish we could find people like you guys to show us the way. Please continue sharing, thank you and God bless.
Having just returned from Colorado Springs and viewing your video, we have realized how much more there is to see in that state. Thank You for taking us along. One of the best videos I've seen.
Great job with this video. Your drone footage was awesome and has given me some ideas. You guys did a good job with the low clearance vehicles. I live in Montrose so these trails are in our backyard. We have gotten discovered and the trails are getting rougher with all the increased traffic. This summer we had to wait for a 18 jeeps to get by us before we could advance up Maggie Gulch. Thanks again for sharing your adventure and the great drone footage. A tip for Lake City is the ice cream shop and all the flavors they offer! 😀😀😀😀😀👍👍👍👍👍
I have to give kudos to the Crosstrek and Rav. I've run a lot of those trails in my XJ and Ram Rebel. The trails aren't necessarily technical, but I spent a lot of time in low range.
This is the first time I have seen your video on your Overland travel this is the best I've ever seen with your drone beautiful mountains nice view Sharp. Feel like I'm floating in the mountains.
Great tour with one great drone shot after another!!! I really appreciate all the work that went into this. FYI - "Ophir Pass" is pronounced "O-fer" (not "O-fear").
Thanks for sharing ur vid. I watched it 3 times since it was posted. We will be visiting colorado this june and planning to take those pass with our subaru. Nice to see a subaru and the rav4 made those trail. ❤
My husband and I just finished both your Alpine Loop videos. What a great job in every respect!! We will be heading that way at the end of June. We have already subscribed to your channel and are looking forward to you narrating books on Audible! Also, we got a lot of information from the questions posed and your answers. GREAT JOB!!
@@OverlandPioneers I hear ya! Last year was my second time down BB. At the top, a half dozen of very capable vehicles joined us. I told them they could lead the way. They replied they had never been down. Suddenly being a veteran, barely, I had the weight of spotting everyone down.....oofta!
I've been making notes of which roads would be 'Subaru Outback Wilderness Edition' approved (that's the factory lifted version with the turbo engine and tweaked gearing/CVT) for when I retire in several years and actually buy one of those for my adventures. If that Crosstek can make it with the non-turbo engine and the lesser aggressive gearing, then the Outback Wilderness should have no issues at all. These are some beautiful places and I'd love to see them (and take my time, once I'm able to retire and be able to linger longer).
I have a (highly) modified Honda Element and have been looking for a “documented” route around the Alpine Loop. Thanks so much for this!! Super cool to see and great to have with your first one.
My first and only video of yours, and I already subscribed. Thanks for the beautiful footage and the great intel for next year's off-road season here in CO!
This just goes to show that you can get out and explore America in most any vehicle. Especially in something 4wd or AWD. The point is to get out there and explore and to enjoy our natural world around us. Sure a big jacked up truck can go off less beaten paths, but with basic recovery gear and some finesse behind the wheel you can probably get there in what you have. A lot of the OG back country explorers (post invention of automobiles) were in simple stock Jeeps and trucks and station wagons (estates for our UK folks). That said, I'd really like to see Toyota offer the Rav4 in a little beefier off road version, like a TRD Off Road or Pro with a rear locker.
Just got back from a week in Colorado Rockies. 1400 miles of amazing scenery through so many passes. Unfortunately I wasn’t going to risk damaging our rental Mercedes GL with anything beyond a basic dirt road. Will have to go back with something more capable. That being said, it’s great to see the Crosstrek and Rav making short work of these areas. Did you even need 4WD in the Wrangler? I’m wondering if a lifted Sprinter/Transit on decent tires would have kept up? Would it need 4WD? I don’t need a rock crawler, just something that can handle this loop. We need more friends like you guys. What a great trip!
Four-wheel-drive is a definite want a sprinter van would not have made it. Not enough break over angle. Short wheelbase four-wheel-drive, but a little bit of clearance will do just fine.
Most of the mountain passes loop back around to main roads. Telluride has a road going all the way around the mountains to Silverton. It just takes about an hour.
Very well done! Everything...the videography, the narration and the views. Thank you for sharing. As a new Gladiator owner (I had a 2014 Wrangler), how did it handle the turnouts on the switchbacks on these trails? I had no problem with my older JK Jeep since it is 26 inches shorter. Thank you again for the quality work.
Really great video, I'm leaving in 3 days to go back out there but this time with an outback. What did you drop tire pressure to and what kind of radios did you use for talking and listening for traffic on the trails??? Thank you and great job !!
Not sure what to go down to on an outback. That’s a 29-31 inch tire? And we just had small GMRS radios. We had them on a private channel so we didn’t have to listen to every joe bob rattle on about nothing lol
Great video! Question- Would your trailer have made it on most of the Alpine Loop trails? Maybe exception of Corkscrew? I have similar trailer and am curious. Thanks for making all the great videos.
It would have but it’s “illegal” to take it on the alpine loop. Heavy fines by rangers on SXS’s. I took it over cinnamon pass the year before and the internet blew up with “I can’t believe you didn’t get caught” comments. Just be cautious
@@OverlandPioneers I wouldn't have known about it either but some hikers told me about it. The trail up there is barely visible in all that talus but it's pretty epic when you get up there. I think it is like 1/3 mile each way. I have a couple shots of it here: ruclips.net/video/YgVTku6rDNI/видео.html
We elk hunted not far from there a couple years ago… the mice were unbelievable in September. They got in our vehicles, tent, one even in a sleeping bag. Did yall have any trouble or have you heard of others having such an issue?
Thank you for this amazing video. I wanted to ask which pass would you choose between engineer pass or cinnamon pass if you have to go again? I am planning to go this weekend but not sure which one to pick.
Headed out there in 2 weeks with a full suspension lift 2016 Outback 3.6 and a couple well capable rigs. Just curious how the trek did overall. Im thinking we will take this exact route you guys did. Any info is greatly appreciated. Great video.
Can you please create a dos and dont while crossing the moderate pass? What vehicles and modifications are required? Can you guys do a video on black bear pass😅
It’s pretty straightforward. Have spotters in areas you feel nervous around. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Small situations can become big ones quickly so take your time. Most stock vehicles can do these (Subaru).
Great video! I plan on taking nearly the same route from silverton around engineer to lake city and back using cinnamon pass, I was wondering how long it takes to do that route? And maybe a breakdown of how long it took to get to engineer, then to lake city, then back again? Thank you!!
It was a full day from Silverton - Animus forks starting at 9ish up to Engineer down to Lake City. Had lunch around 1:30. Up to cinnamon pass. Down to animus and back to silverton by 6ish
Exceptional video and story telling. We have a new Subaru Outback and were wondering if the 2.5 non turbo engine would pull these steep grades. Thanks.
@@OverlandPioneers Thanks for the response. We have been to San Juans dozens of times with our Jeep over the years. I have shot landscape/travel professionaly for many years now. I have been on the fence about a drone. After watching your drone/video I am no longer on the fence. Time for an old dog to learn a few new tricks. Thanks again.
Great video! are most of these trials one directional? if so, how do we find out? I’m planning on bringing my tundra but would be a little big to pass other vehicles coming the other direction.
Absolutly love your setup and the trips you take. Amazing job putting together the video. Quick question, I'm planning to purchase the same trailer you have, any issues taking it on these types of trips ? I noticed it wasn't connected often.
The alpine loop area is the only no trailer marked area that we have come to. It becomes our base camp to come back to. Which after a long day of being thrown around is great. Especially since it’s just there and we don’t have to set it up every day. The reason the Alpine Loop area doesn’t like Traylor is going across his if they didn’t mark that they would most likely have campers being pulled across and getting stuck on the switchbacks like they do all the time. Typically we pull it most everywhere since we don’t stay long in each area. The KOAR videos are another basecamp and explore the area type event. Both styles ache their benefits
You produce some amazing videos! The video quality is amazing and the voice over feels spot on. Makes we want to get out now and do this loop. I'm curious what your tire and suspension set up is. Have you added lockers front or rear? Right now I'm pretty stock with just BFG 33s (I do have the max tow package with the wider axles and limited slip) and I'm considering the Mopar 2" or AEV lift. Keep up the great work!
Hi, I wanna do the Alpine Loop out of Lake City on my own starting with Cinnamon Pass and then the Engineer Pass. Will it be possible to do with a RAV4 Rentalcar and normal street tires? Saw some dificult parts on your vid in my opinion. I wanna do also do ophir eastbound. What do you think?
I wouldn’t do it in a rental car without full insurance because you’re definitely going to scrape. lol. we had to put some quarter panel black plastic back on after engineer. And you’ll be fine but again I’d be careful with the rental car. This RAV4 had a 2 inch lift.
@@OverlandPioneers Thanks for the advice. I thought something like this could be the problem. I will have full insurance but also will not damage the car to much.
