I just had all the lifters replaced on a 2021 Cadillac Escalade with only 23000 miles on it. One of the lifter failed, but Cadillac dealer replaced all of them. Watching your video was a great explanation as to what they had to do. Thank you!!

What a shame!!! Nice vehicles but I wont come near one because the reliability is so terrible. Plus you have carbon build up issues. Transmission issues. Electrical issues. Weak fatal roofs in a rollover. Much much better off with a Lincoln Navigator, Toyota sequoia or Lexus LX.

replaced all of them with stock DOD parts so it fails later down the line....I heard instances where they went into all the work of pulling a head/s just to replace the bad lifter.....total craziness since the motor is already apart to not do all....but thats the dealer

He deserves to be sued and put out of business. I feel so bad for the guy that got ripped off. Thanks for this video btw - I learned a few tidbits from it! Take care

GM sells the block for $4200 with 12m12k warranty over the parts counter. If installed at GM dealer then you get 3y 100k warranty but it’s $8900 installed. Just had mine done. These J code l86 only have 100k total engine life.

GM should have a recall for these engines, I been a GM customer for 2002 buy 3 brand new Silverados, my 2013 and my 2015 Silverado with 37,000 miles are both broken on my drive way, I would never buy a GM vehicle in my live, and I will be talking to all my family, friends and any body who wants to buy a GM vehicle to don’t buy it. This engines has so many problems that it’s ridiculous and GM it’s not doing anything about it, and to make things worse they still putting those same engines in new vehicles.

5w30 is perfectly fine for those. 20 weight only exist because of the stupid EPA CAFE requirements. It’s the same motor in the C7 Corvette and Camaros that call for 30 weight. The only differences are the intake manifold and exhaust and of course the tuning.

Hi Alex, at 20:16 you mentioned the valley pan, I just learened this called the "valley lifter oil manifold." I am starting this job on a 2015 Escalade ESV with 73K on the meter. I have just taken the valve cover off and found a broken spring #5 on the left bank. The spark plug end is a deformed. The lifter rod is not bent and the underside of the rocker does not show any dimpling, so hoping for the best, but won't know until I get the cylinder head off. The owner said the car started to hestitate while driving around 15 mph, so he pulled over and turned off the engine and then tried to restart, but it wouldn't turn over. I am hoping for the best case scenario! Thank you! Jon (Erie, PA).

Hello, thanks for the great video. I’m currently in the process of performing this job on my 2015 Escalade. I need to remove the engine so that I can replace the oil pump. My question is, what needs to be done to separate the engine from the transmission, do you lift the motor directly up and at the same time lift the transmission or do you remove the transmission first then the engine.

If you like the truck, fix it. It’s expensive and there isn’t a guarantee that if fix it that it won’t happen again down the road. I heard that if you upgrade the lifters to a brand called Johnson lifters, you won’t have the problem anymore. But those are super expensive and when I give my customers the option, they choose to go with the “Melling” brand that I use. It’s just a pain in the butt really 😞

Hey there sorry to hear you’re having issues. I don’t believe what other mechanics say I will have to hear it for myself, is it possible you can Instagram me a video of it running. Throwing connecting rod bearings at it won’t solve the problem if the crank is scored up most times it is and you will have to send the crankshaft off to a machine shop to get it reworked and hope the mechanic can install everything back right, at that point I think it’s easier to put a engine in it that’s more guaranteed

    • @AlexTheCarDoctor

Disabled and it won’t fix the issue the proper way is to change the cam and go in with regular lifters then disable it so the computer won’t throw a check engine light, disabling it is just a Band-Aid on a gunshot wound

Hey Alex, love the video. I am doing this repair at home myself. However, I left the engine in the car and I was able to take all the parts apart and get the phaser out. However, after installing the new cam and camp plate, I am stuck and I am not able to get the new phaser in. I broke one last night and I just picked up a brand new phaser for $225 and I don’t want to break another one. You said there was a GM tech that knew how to install this without dropping the oil pan or removing the oil pump. How do you do that?

    • @AlexTheCarDoctor
