    I love the Ultimates, in my opinion it's absolute perfection, each avenger shines and there's actual good humor, and moments of silence and character development, what the movies aren't doing anymore.

    “You think this letter on my head stands for France?!” I’m not at all a pro-America guy but I remember reading this as a teenager (I still own all of my original off-the-rack issues of this run) and thinking it was the most badass thing I’ve ever seen a superhero say to a villain. Def problematic but man it was cool haha

    I think this is one of my favourite Marvel Omni's, which is probably because of the astonishing Bryan Hitch art, and, less so because of good writing from Millar.
    Millar's writing is cynical, and, most of the characters are deeply unpleasant individuals.
    Nice commentary.

    • @TheComicBookReport

      This art is stunning. This was I believe the first “Avengers” book I ever read and it really set a bar for me. Seeing these characters realized by Hitch but also the scope of this whole world-his perspective in the art was absolutely cinematic.
      Have you read their run on Fantastic Four?

    This is the book that brought me back to comics after about 15 years away. Having left in the 80s, had not seen art like this before. The wide screen, semi-realistic artwork was an absolute revelation. At the time of reading I didn’t understand the Ultimate universe was a parallel one so just thought a lot had happened to the Avengers since I’d last seen them!!! Love the book and like you delighted to get it in oversize format with all those extras. Great review, thanks. Have you read Ultimates 3, Ultimatum etc and if so what do you think?

    • @TheComicBookReport
      @TheComicBookReport  Год назад +2

      Yeah the cinematic scope of this book is just captivating. I was blown away when I first read it and it’s really the first “Avengers” book that made me care about a lot of these characters.
      The oversized format is a dream.
      I have yet to read ultimates 3 though I’d like to someday if able. I do think I’ve read some of ultimatum but it’s been quite awhile 🤔📚

      @@TheComicBookReport I do not recommend reading Ultimates 3 or Ultimatum...there was an OHC with both and the art is great and I guess worth buying just for that (the Ultimates book drawn by Frank Cho as well), but the writing is absolutely dreadful. I'm gonna grab this omni though, I've never read it, just had the issue with the giant spread as a floppy. Hitch hasn't been as good since, I wonder if that broke him and made him work faster and less detailed.

      @@nivekleveb8872 I agree, skip Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum. I’d go so far as to say those are the single worst comics Marvel has ever published. Off-putting in every way, if I had my way I’d buy back every copy of it and destroy it so it’s existence could be erased. It’s abysmal.

      @@danhess2 The art is great, though...I would rather own those than Maximum Clonage, Onslaught or my most recent contender for worst Marvel series, Black Panther written by John Ridley..but the Jeph Loeb Ultimates comics are bloody terrible. I admire Joe Mad's work in Ultimates 3 in particular...if you treat it like an art book of Joe drawing a bunch of Marvel characters in cool action scenes it's actually good, just don't read it.

      @@TheComicBookReport - He was, yeah. Millar did the first two years or so (I liked the book overall. I think that they even used a storyarc for the second X-Men movie.). Then Bendis took over for a while (In the #30’s, I believe.). He did a pretty powerful story mostly focusing on Wolverine. In fact, I think that Bendis pretty much used the same storyarc for his Uncanny X-Men run.
