Ingredients:
Serves 3 people or 2 very greedy people (like us!)
420g of boneless chicken thigh - cut into bite sizes
3 cloves of garlic - lightly smashed
1 tablespoon of light soya sauce
1 tablespoon of Chinese white rice wine
1 teaspoon of five spice powder
1 teaspoon of salt
1 egg white
A few dashes of white pepper
2 tablespoons of plain flour
1 teaspoon of baking soda
2 tablespoons of water
Some sweet potato flour
Some cooking oil (for deep-frying)
Remember to sprinkle some five spice salt
Simply mix 0.5 tsp of salt + 0.5 tsp of five spice powder & 0.25 tsp of grounded white pepper

I made this for dinner tonight. I’ve never made this before. It was soooo delicious! My family are big eaters and said it tasted just like the restaurants but better b/c it tasted more fresher. Kailem Jones sorry that happened! Just FYI, Asian cooking almost always requires use of oil, garlic, onions + shallots which can splatter & stink up the house! Therefore, I use a portable burner stove and cook in my backyard lol. No mess, no stink & no stove cleaning! It’s an Asian hack lol. And don’t give up!! pls try this recipe again, your family will love you for it!

20 years ago there was a little kiosk in our supermarket that sold Taiwanese street food. My favorite was the crunchy fried squid/chicken. I remember it being fried, bagged and seasoned with a spice/salt. I think this may very well be the same thing! My mouth is crying in happy memories. Thank you for posting this.

I tried this last week. I used chicken drumsticks because that was available at home. Wow! It came out so.. well! I like the double frying part best! I kept half of it in the fridge after frying once. I had too many for one meal. Fried them second time in the evening & was just as crispy! Thanks so much!

Amazing! My husband couldn't wait so he ate the one right after 1st deep fried done and he said "this is amazing!". And I tried right after 2nd deep fried done. Wow! So good!!! Was already tasty enough that I was seriously considering do I really need extra spices. Haha (but of course with extra spices, that taste as same as Taiwanese chicken restaurant!!)

Interesting marinade and batter technique. Seems a lot easier than the standard dry, wet, dry. Definitely gonna have to try it out.

You can air fry if you have air fryer
air fryer! If u don't have one..man, its so versatile. I have the Kalorik air fryer/oven combo and its awsome! or if you have a heavy pot and deep fryer, set it up outdoors if u can so your house doesn't smell like oil.

I tried this recipe tonight and it was a hit! Thank you for the super easy and delicious recipe. I fried some basil leaves along with it to infuse the basil flavor to the oil. You definitely need the sweet potato starch to get the right texture of popcorn chicken. The coarse clumps make them crispy.
Trang Liang how did u prepare the basil leaves? I wanted to do that too but I didn’t have any on hand
@@aguacabana3476 I used Thai basil from the Asian market. If you wash them make sure they are very very dry before frying. Also add basil when the oil is still cold and take them out as soon as you hear the oil popping. The first time I tried it I added basil to hot oil and it exploded and splattered everywhere 😂
