    I have a wampler bravado head myself, and I can tell you this is the most perfect pedal platform I have ever heard. Not a pcb in it and it will last a lifetime. With pedals I can get any sound out of it which I need. I think of this head as my keeper amp.

  • @intrsoul

    Brilliant demo. I find myself more often using a clean, flat setting on the amp and my Plexi Drive at the end of the signal chain to 'catch' everything else. Compressor, Tone Bender, TS, Fuzzface.. all sound great into the Plexi Drive, and you have the added bonus of normalizing the tone and volume when switching between disparate pedals. Not for everyone, but it's been working for me. My conundrum now is figuring out a simple volume boost AFTER the Plexi Drive.

    Lukather did indeed use Deluxe's and Princeton's in the studio around that time. But they we're heavily modded by Paul Rivera, who was working out of the Valley Arts shop around that time... The same shop that made Steve Lukather his "Robot" guitar, which was his go to guitar before the Music Man stuff. He has stated several times that the guitar he used on Rosanna was his '59 Les Paul.
    The mod's on the amps included different mid-boost features, cascading gainstages (using the reverb tube, i think?) and - i believe - replacing the speakers with EVM's, so they wouldn't flab out.
    That's at least what I've been able to sniff out :)

      +Magnus Guldbrandsen Thank you Magnus. It dawned on me - Mick here - that I think Luke might have said that to me himself. Dan and Mick - Thank you guys for your excellent reviews, explanations, etc. As a former audio engineer, guitar player/musician, touring sound engineer, I have always been seeking great tone. I used to repair tube guitar amps and do tone stack mods for that 'great tone'. I really appreciate every one of your You Tube videos that I have seen so far. Thanks and keep up the great work! (I was also Sonny Landreth's touring sound engineer/production manager for several years.) "Life is too short for bad tone."

    • @dennyaudio
      @dennyaudio 6 лет назад

      Yep. That's how I "got my job with Sonny". I was hired to do a special show. (Only recording industry executives from around the world were in attendance - first gig with Sonny. Not much pressure eh? ;) ). Sonny's manager at that time was Dennis Lord. (He works at SESAC still, and wrote that county song for Travis Tritt - "I'm a member of the country club".) Anyway, Dennis watched me closly throughout the gig. There were some "special guests", (one being my ol' buddy - Vince Gill). So the tour manager chewed me out when I brought down Viince's vocals during the show because Vince's harmonies were off. (Hey, I know what my job is - to "bring down the 'sucky' parts). So Dennis heard me tell the tour manager why I brought down Vince's vocals. "He sucked on vocals" - only for a second or two. After the gig I walked backstage and Vince waved at me. I told Vince that he sucked on vocals. Now, anyone who has ever heard Vince sing knows that this is impossible. But since I knew Vince, I told him that anyway. Vince came over and gave me a hug and said "Thanks for covering up my bad harmonies." The tour manager's eyes were wide open! So, Sonny came up to me after that and asked me what I was planning on doing for the next 5 years or so. I took the job. If you want to know how great a Dumble amp sounds up close and personal, I consider it very fortunate that I was able to mix many shows with Sonny using his Dumble. (I actually got to play guitar through Sonny's Dumble several times when we were goofing around at sound checks.) Dave Ranson, (bass player), used to not show up for sound checks so I played bass with Sonny and the drummer at that time, Mike Organ). What fun we had on the road. I think it was about that time when I started saying "Life is too short for bad tone." You wanna talk about a 'finesse' player - Sonny is amazing. I am also impressed with you guys too. I can tell that Dan and Mick know their stuff and know "how to listen". I used to teach audio engineering and I would tell people that there is a big difference between "hearing" and "listening". You guys know 'how to listen'. Keep up the great work! Cheers!

    I Recommend the following setup when you feature the hot rod deluxe. Hot rod with vintage 30 and Warehouse ET65 in ext cab. Pedal order: Fairfield Circuitry the accountant- EP booster-overrated special-carpe diem or tube screamer. Strymon Deco in the loop set to studio mode (see manual) along with your favorite modulation. I use tape saturation when soloing. I get rich harmonics and even some feedback at bedroom levels.

    Just discovered your RUclips channel about a week ago while looking into pedal info. Started playing in my teens (early 30's now) and have never gotten into pedals. Always done the whole Marshall/Trip Rec/rack effects. 4x12 cab, and that whole bit as well.
    Musical tastes and playing have changed over the years as they do, and I don't spend nearly the amount of time playing as I'd like.
    SO, I am looking to scale back, and change things up a bit. No sense in a big rig set up these days. What started as researching what various bands I like use, has brought me here. Long story short.....
    LOVE LOVE LOVE your show. You guys are easy to learn from, and very entertaining. I have the shows running in the background while I work the day job at the computer.

    I like how my dual Orange Micro Terror rig sounds. I leave the eq at 12 O'Clock. I have several high quality overdrives which sound very amp like, used like multi-channels on an an amp. I leave my amps on clean, but I use a parametric eq to shape the overall tone which sets well with my rig. I am using this method, due to not being able to afford an expensive multi-channel amplifier. It works great for me. If I had a Mesa Boogie TC-50, I wouldn't have to use all those overdrives. I think the concept of a pedal platform amp makes a lot of sense. Since, some amp don't work as well with pedals.

    Bought a Marshall JTM45 (Bassman clone) in 1990-ish specifically as a pedal platform. Cleaner than most I never even try and get it to break up, it doesn't get any louder anyway and plugged into the high/bright channel on about 4 it's a huge clean sound that burnishes anything fed through it. Think about it, all the hype about powerful pickups driving valve amps - what is a pickup if not solid-state? Solid state into a valve amp sounds great - the amp warms S-S pedals up a treat.

    Tone is so personal, that said, I always have found that if you find the best clean tone to your ears, dynamic, big sounding... you are all set. Just add pedals to add color or not. I am a Clean tone leaning player. You may need two amps for different size venues if you like to stay at that perfect point in the amps volume range. So a tweed deluxe type and a 6l6 type. Just my two cents. Love this channel. Helped me find great pedals.

    G'day from 'Straya, Mick and Dan-o! Thanks for the vids, love them to bits. Suggestion: what about a video on MIDI for pedalboards-- what it is, how it works, and what you can do with it on a pedalboard? Heaps of pedals have MIDI I/O's that never get used. How do we "harness the power of MIDI"? Keep up the great work!

  • @luisbarrera7248

    I use a jc40 as my pedal platform. it can literally do EVERYTHING. it is a deceitful amp in the sense that it's so neutral (sterile?) that most view it as a plug and play, which does work like that if that's what you want. But if you dig deep and actually mess with it, it has features that allow it to actually fix it's flaws. fucking crazy, but upon giving it the time of day, I stumbled upon a happy accident. Now, with the right pedals, I can play pretty brutal sounding metal, and soft jazz if I want. The important factor aside from actually sitting down and messing with the amps features is making sure you get the right pedals for the desired application. because if the amp does not vibe, it's usually the pedals fault. of course im still only talking about the jc40. I realize it's a very polarizing amp, but if you actually give it the time and effort to understand it, you will be rewarded with a universal (and pleasant) clean, transparent, tone for your guitar and pedals

    • @lenduckworth99
      @lenduckworth99 7 лет назад

      Luis Barrera Lots of 'rock' amps have quite 'sterile' clean channels which make them better choices as platforms for pedals. My Peavey Valveking with an Eminence speaker is a great pedal amp.

    One thing I have been thinking about is looking at the best rig to cover dirty tones, could you do a video that looks at using a clean amp with pedals giving all the gain, an amp on the edge of breakup where you can boost it into overdrive with pedals, and a dirty amp, so you would basically have either 100% pedal gain, ~50/50 pedal/amp gain, and 100% amp gain, and the positives and negatives with each set up?

  • @MarijnSlot
    @MarijnSlot 7 лет назад +2

    I've been a fan of the show since the beginning and I've learned A LOT of stuff over these episodes. But what I liked most of all was the objective approach and the comparing of different pedals/amps within a certain theme. I kinda missed the other pedal platform options in this one. Just a full feature of the Bravado, which does sound preeeeetty nice, but not even a mention to the classic Hiwatt amps for instance... these are highly regarded as perfect pedal platforms. Dunno, made to whole episode seems like a 49 minute Wampler commercial.

    Ello Mates! Long time viewer first time requester! Please review or explain the BBE Sonic Stomp! Love mine! Last in the chain and it cleans the signal up. Adds a buttery fullness I can't explain. Based on the rack system(Sonic Maximizer), it supposedly lines up the signal for the amp. Imagine( + & -) all jumbled up. Signal could get fizzy. This is supposed to line them up. Could be wrong, don't quote me! Also is it considered a boost?

    Great One! The Bravado seems a great AMP indeed!! What amuse me is how you guys always have an even volume when changing or even stacking pedals. This is the magic of:
    A) 2 guys and one keeps on moving knobs?;
    B) A lot o planning before getting everything even?;
    C) Some sort of Limiter on the Video?
    A show on this would also be great. Cheers

    Interesting, guys. My main amp (right now) is a David Allen version of a Deluxe but with 6L6GC s and a Gz34 - without a normal channel. Sounds similar to Brian’s amp but not identical. Works well with the same family of pedals. Pete.

    A hidden gem amp for that application is a Carvin X100B if you are on a budget ;) . They really take well pedal and the variable power section and the graphic EQ are really useful. However, you have to be really careful with the EQ section because it is very drastic.

    Lukather once said in an interview that the "Rosanna" tone was a Les Paul through a Rivera-modded blackface Deluxe Reverb. He also had "a couple of Marshalls done up by Paul". It makes sense in the context what Rivera later did with his own amp line. (Also, FWIW, I called the Rivera customer service number awhile back with questions about modding my R55; Paul Rivera Sr himself picked up the phone and answered my questions.)

      T- Hawk As another Orange I agree with this. On the other hand I've found a lot of pedals that work with a small Orange amp. Only ones that don't are the Mid hump overdrives.

    I remember tech 21 doing an amp like this but it was solid state. I checked it out like 15 years ago and it was not half bad..but it never could replace my Fender Deville. It’s pretty much all I’ve ever done - Mick here - and it’s Dan’s preferred approach too. More headroom (albeit with a level of natural overdrive for certain applications/amps) and the right pedals. Or a slightly overdriving amp like a Plexi or AC30 and a booster. It’s how I learned to play with dynamics. Nice!

  • @fishypaw
    @fishypaw 7 лет назад +1

    I can't thank you guys enough for all the useful stuff I've learned from watching your videos. I enjoy listening to both of you play and share the amazing insight and experience you have. Inspired by your video(s), I tried something I've not tried before. I cranked my WEM Dominator III all the way to the top just to see how it sounds and how much top end it has. Well fuck me (sorry only word that conveys my surprise), I knew it was a nice amp but I didn't realise how nice. Rolling off the guitar volume gives an amazing clean tone, and when I turn the guitar up (using a tele black top) the amp has a wonderful growling overdrive. It sounds like an early Marshall IMO. I had no idea my amp could do this. I could only play for a few minutes mind you before my neighbours started complaining (ooops). In conclusion the WEM doesn't have as much head room as I thought it had, but it's still a great amp that takes pedals well. Coincidentally, I have a few overdrive pedals, the one that sounds the best with my amp is probably the Wampler Plexidrive.
    Thanks again guys. I've learned more about pedals and amps from watching your videos than all the other channels combined, and I still have a shit load to learn, so keep up the good work.

  • @szpfryderyk

    It's totally me, but all I can think of while listening to this amplifier is that is a "rational" choice. After the episodes where you went bananas playing vintage, exotic stuff this seems like an amp that you would just play covers with. Unless one has some amazing super-rare effects, wouldn't choose this one over another that being tonally imperfect augments player's personality (of course when chosen adequately).
    Utilitarian amp for me (not necessarily a bad thing) and as you concluded an "interesting addition to the market". Highly educative episode, guys!

  • @Aleph_Null_Audio
    @Aleph_Null_Audio 7 лет назад

    7:32 It is possible to get a good (clean) sound going straight to front of house, but you have to account for what a speaker cabinet is doing; namely acting as a band-pass filter. Pedals are designed with the assumption that they will be run through a speaker that shores off everything below about 80Hz and everything above 6kHz.
    I've gotten an awesome sound with a baritone telecater into a Bogner Ecstacy Blue set clean and strait to a DI. I had to turn the treble way down compared to running it into an amp. It was more Hi-Fi sounding than an amp, but it was a cool sound.

    What makes a good pedal amp is what makes a good amp, imo. For me, that means it first needs to sound great without pedals. I look for touch sensitivity, headroom and a volume sweet spot that's appropriate to the application. If I then plug in a Strat and each position on the selector switch sounds like a different guitar, I'm a happy camper.

    Hey guys! Love the show!! Genrally i get the feeling that the speaker itself has a lot to do with the overall EQ-curve of any amp. This has to effect the pedal of choice, primarily overdrive, distorsion and fuzz. Any chanses of making a video on: using the same head and switching speakers? In conjunction with pedals. I.E.
