@@tyvizenor965 Yes, they would I woud say. They did not have affection at all at first, but after the assassination attempt on Reagan in 1981 when he was rushed to the hospital, Bush was immediately flown to Washington DC. The helicopter was planning to land to the White House, but Bush said no, saying that "Only the President of the United states lands there. Take me to the vice-presidential residence. I'll take a car to the White House". Bush also gave a very brief statement, and refused to take the limelight at all. Reagan was very impressed by his vice president's actions, as stated by James Baker and several other sources close to Reagan and Bush. He then ordered for his Vice President to be kept up to date on all information, so that should anything more happen, he would be ready to lead on. The two men's mutual respect grew day by day, to the point where they had lunch together every Thursday during the Reagan presidency.
Furthermore, in a speech at the Bush library dedication in 1997, Nancy Reagan spoke on behalf of Reagan who was then struggling with Alzheimers. She said in her speech how after Bush's inauguration, she and Reagan flew back to California, and it was an exciting first week out of office. Then Thursday came along, and Reagan was about to sit down to eat a sandwich in his office, and it just didn't feel the same. Suddenly, his phone rang, Mrs Reagan said. She told how a a White House staffer said President Bush was calling. Then he was patched through and Reagan heard "George's friendly voice on the phone. He (Bush) said he, too, was about to eat lunch, and it just wasn't the same without him." Nancy Reagan said Reagan was very touched and she'd always remember how much that phone call meant to him.
You should also see Bush's speech at Reagan's funeral. He gets emotional. Cries as he says "As his vice president for 8 years I learned more from Ronald Reagan (long pause as Bush gathers himself after breaking down)... than from anyone I encountered in all my years of public life."
